MAHALIA JACKSON Live late 1960's We shall overcome

We shall overcome--very moving she gets totally saturated with the song, even at the end as she walks from the mic the power of her voice is still overwhelming. This song was a staple of the civil rights movement, Mahalia worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King. She also sang Precious Lord at his funeral in 1968

To walk away from a microphone like that, and still be heard so powerfully is beyond belief. How blessed those people in the audience were to be present at this performance.

I am so thrilled that my grandmother introduces me to Ms. Jackson and her music when I was very young and today, I'm going on 71 years of age and when I listen to her my soul is at peace. In 1999 my only son was killed by gun violence in Washington DC, and for an entire year I listen to her singing It Is Well with My Soul and understood a lot more about death she did not worry about dying, and today I know it's well with my soul. Trying time and life happening to all of us it going to be alright one day. Sing Mahalia, I know you keep the souls in heaven entertain and the angels rejoiced to have you around the throne. When I hear the younger folks say Aretha Frankling Queen of Gospel, please don't think I'm disrespecting her NO! Mahalia Jackson was Queen of Gospel because she was guided by the God and sang to his glory.

My pastor at the time and Mahalia Jackson were friends and from the same hometown. while traveling to another church, we met her at a rest stop on the turnpike. She sat at our table and had a meal with us. I was mesmerized...beautiful personality, pleasant, smiling and making jokes. I was pregnant with my twins at the time and she rubbed my stomach for good luck, said a prayer and sang to my babies! I will never forget that wonderful experience. She is truly the absolute best gospel singer ever!!

Yes indeed Mahalia Jackson is the greatest not only gospel singing But the greatest singer of all times. I thank God that she chose to sing gospel and give him the praise. There has been many and will do many gospel singers since you went on to Glory. Yet Mahalia Jackson is it a class completely all by herself. Thank you Lord for blessing the world with Mahalia Jackson

It wasn't about racism. The song was a gospel song about "overcoming", or going to heaven. It became a civil rights anthem much later. Mahalia was talking about salvation. By truly being a Christian (Christ-like) and not simply taking God's blessings. But rather extending these blessings to others around us. And if we fail, we can apologize to God, and try again the next day. We're human. God doesn't expect perfection. But He does want us to strive to become better Christians. This was during the Vietnam era when the world was full of turbulence. And yes, the civil rights movement was warming up. But Mahalia is speaking about our actions today, so that we may all overcome, to heaven together.

that's remarkable that you come from a civil rights background and only heard this for the first time in 2015. Not to offend you but I'm from Europe from a communist /catholic background and I've known this song all my life. know you're history uncle (it's black)
@UncleDuTheWatchman

@@1969TheGreat I'm not exactly offended but I didn't say that I had never heard the song. I've been a musician almost all my life. I have played this song for many a singer. What I said was that I was born AFTER the Civil Rights Movement and never got to hear it sung LIVE during the Civil Rights Era so when people talk about the song and the power of the song, they're talking about something they experienced in real time. I can't go back to the 60s and re-live the song with them. What I said was that the power of THIS rendition gives me a clear picture of what the song must have done for people in the 60s. History is one of my best subjects. Read for comprehension before checking people.

Tears... This reminds me of my childhood sitting in church at the age of 5 with my Grandmother.. Oh how I wish she was here to guide me in all this racial turmoil. How did she ever live through it? And I know it was worst for than it is for me. I didn't experience discrimination while she was alive so those was the questions I didn't know to ask. The pain my grandparents must've endured.. Mahalia's voice was so plain and clean and beautiful that she didn't need any extra notes or flowery runs for you to feel her. Just pure power and beauty, and she completely fills the room even as she moves away from the microphone. Just a one of a kind performer. Only Aretha at her best compares to me, although Aretha was totally different in her gospel style.

When I hear her sing it gets down ...way down in my soul. It's like being nearer to my ancestors. The ones that put their life on the line for my freedom. Then I go back into the world and I see that freedom ever so slowly being taken away. By my people and the ones that diligently and deliberately work to oppress us as a people. I live and Chicago and I have to wonder if Jesus, Martin, Mahalia, Malcolm, and the other great prophets lived what would they say to us now.

This is a treasure, thank you for posting this elfeco. It really shows the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement. That Mahalia could go to a foreign land and sing this song baring her soul, and have it translate through language and culture is a testament to the commonalities we share as humans -- very powerful. I hope we can stop finger pointing, and debating about who's at fault and just concentrate on how we can improve the world and make it better, so that we can overcome one day.

We all come from the same source regardless of race, caste, wealth etc. Mahalia sang about that that connects us all regardless of language and place. She was blessed with a voice that cut through hatred and ignorance that which rascism divides the soul to god the eternal ---eternity. No death no hatred just life ...Live !

When things in this world is looking bleak just listen to this song and see the power of God using Mahalia to send such strong message to his people to not give up but everything gonna be alright one day. The light that shines behind Mahalia head gives her an image of an angel. Her voice and countenance is like looking God in the face. What a God sent angel.

When the late "Mother of Gospel" sings; she truly makes you feel something - even if you don't have the spirit within you. My God, created someone who was different and there is no other like this woman. What a beautiful song. It touches my heart deeply. Peace!
