Mahindra Thar 4x2 vs 4x4 : Which Thar is better for you the 2WD or the 4WD. Mahindra recently launched the Thar Rear Wheel Drive variant which is a 4x2 option with a 1.5 liter diesel engine and a 2.0 liter petrol engine. The Diesel engine variant only has a 6 speed manual gearbox and the petrol one only has the 6 speed automatic or AT gearbox. 4x2 Rear Wheel Drive variant is good if you don't have too much off-roading and want to only go exploring. The 4x4 variant works better for enthusiasts who love getting stuck in the mud.

Would you say that the 4x2 diesel can do light weight offroading in the hills/muddy/snow terrains for sometimes ? Coz many ppl once they get the 4x2 will have the thinking its a THAR would want to test the limits and wont have that 4x4 to rescue them out of situations ?

Yes for sure. For most situations your Thar 4x2 is plenty powerful and rugged enough. 4x4 is great only if you are actively looking for situations where you want to try out a more intense adventure approach. My guess is that most 4x4 owners use the facility in a very limited manner if at all.

Hi Sir, does the hard top make more noise than usual cars during rain? Also is there any water leakage issues through the hard top during heavy rain?

There used to be leakage issues but that has been resolved with the 3rd generation roof. Initial delivery pieces had this problem including my personal vehicle. That has been resolved now. No leakage any more!

Sir, have you faced any issue where check engine light is on and the vehicle is not catching up speed? I've booked Thar RWD diesel model so some videos on KZfaq regarding issues with thar diesel engine is keeping me anxious.. Is there any serious engine issues?

This is an issue with all the new vehicles when the DPF warning comes on. At that point the vehicle engine performance gets limited. Whether you get a Thar or any other vehicle manufactured after 2020 you will face the same issue.

Remember to keep the DPF clean. That is pretty much it.

Sir RWD diesel manual and RWD petrol automatic is there any performance difference between them coz petrol engine is 1997 cc and manual has 1497cc is this effect any kind of performance coz I have already booked the 4x2 manual diesel but it concerns me a lot what should I do because I don’t manual or petrol but this engine difference giving me headaches please help

Between petrol and diesel there will always be a performance difference. Petrol feels more revv happy than a diesel. That said, in the Thar, if you want a manual ..then go for the diesel. It is peppy, has good punch and is a refined engine!

Absolutely if you enjoy an active lifestyle and love looking for adventures it is a perfect fit. The RWD is also great as a city vehicle and can be used all around.

Does the 2wd Thar have a lower turning circle radius? Traditionally 2wd vehicles from Mahindra offered a sharper turning circle radius. I find the 5.9M turning circle radius of the 4/4 Thar to be too cumbersome.

Maybe slightly less, though we did not check this out. You may want to see the tech specs or get the exact info in a Mahindra dealership.

@@MotorScribesthanks for your reply. No, it's not on the tech specs. Did check with the dealership too. Though the rep there was far better than the ones from yesteryears, he did not know. I'm hoping that it be close to Bolero Neo's 5.3M.

@@GbMuthu do you have driving conditions where this is important? Maybe driving in tight mountain roads or in a very busy city with narrow lanes. You pose a very interesting question and it is interesting to know. We will ask the manufacturer as well and find out.

@@MotorScribes ya, pls do ask the manufacturer. Actually a tighter turning circle radius is crucial even in an ordinary traffic signal U-turn. I don't have any off-road purpose for the Thar. Just need an old-school runabout to battle it out in the urban jungle. I would have preferred so much for Mahindra to offer side facing rear row seats.

Hi, yes there is. The Thar 2WD has a smaller 1.5 litre engine which is more efficient as well. The Thar 4x4 has a 2.2 litre engine -plus it is a heavier vehicle, so mileage figures are a little lower.

A few motoring reviewers say that the Electronic Brake Locking Differential (EBLD) is only available in 4x4 models. However, the Mahindra website clearly states that it is available in the D117 LX, while the "Advanced" EBLD is present in the 4x4 models. Would love to know what is the accurate information regarding this. And in your experience off roading, is the absence of an EBLD a deal breaker for a 4x2 vehicle?

The manufacturer did share that EBLD is there in the 4x2 model and with that you should be able to manage most of the challenging terrain out there. While we have not personally tried it out, it would be fun to see what the 4x2 can do in a 4x4 obstacle course.

We will try and get our hands on a RWD again from the manufacturer...we already have the 4x4. We have access to a few tracks we can try this out on. Thanks for writing in...always fun to see what everyone is thinking!!!
