On the latest episode of Neat and Unfiltered, Kenyon and Kiss are joined by Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. After struggling with Tourette Syndrome at an early age, Abdul-Rauf gave himself the drive and enough reps to go to LSU and have one of the greatest freshman seasons in NCAA history. A lengthy NBA career included a lot more than just basketball, including his decision not to stand in a "dignified posture" during the National Anthem.
Season 2 Episode 11
2:45 - Abdul-Rauf played his first actual basketball game at 10 years old and has never wanted to stop playing ever since.
5:15 - The impact Abdul-Rauf's mother had as he was growing up in Gulfport, Mississippi and the emphasis on bettering himself each day.
8:00 - Dealing with Tourette's and for how many struggles there were growing up, it gave him the discipline and repetition that's required to be a pro basketball player.
16:10 - Abdul-Rauf must have perfected his craft by the time he came to LSU, averaging 30 points a game, and having one of the most dominant freshman seasons in NCAA History.
20:00 - The LSU Tigers had Abdul-Rauf but they also had "big and bigger" with Shaquille O'Neal and Stanley Roberts.
21:45 - Abdul-Rauf's decision to leave the NBA after his sophomore season and having no regrets becoming a professional athlete to provide for his family.
25:45 - Entering the NBA and not having the success he was used to right away, and ultimately changing his name after becoming the NBA's Most Improved Player.
30:10 - The NBA's policy on standing and addressing the flag for the National Anthem became a subject of controversy long before Colin Kaepernick, and Abdul-Rauf details his thought process while navigating repercussions from the NBA.
36:50 - How David Stern's tenure as Commissioner seemed to rub both Abdul-Rauf and Kenyon both the wrong way.
44:15 - Adbul-Rauf and Kenyon Martin facing off against each other in the Big 3.

real social activism is rarely allowed. even today...the boys can speak about racial inequality in usa but are literarly now allowed to speak up about china and literal human tourture that goes over there. Think about that. NBA is not only connected to China because of the viewrship but also because all of the sneakers are made over there and a lot of nba official merch. NBA is contrubuting to this human suffering yet...they can't say nothing.

Man, It's crazy to hear him talk about his symptoms. I was diagnosed with an involuntary muscle movement disorder called "Dystonia" a rare side effect of a medication I was prescribed (Buspirone). It's a neurological disorder and thoughts impact the muscle movements...stress etc. Because I struggle with Complex PTSD (the very reason I was taking the medication), it's like your body is at war with your mind. It sounds so similar tourette syndrome.... At the height of my episodes, I could barely function .... The fact that this man was able to do what he did despite his disorder is unbelievable... Truly one of the most amazing stories of perseverance, that so few people even know. This dude is an inspiration on another level ....

Thats kind of a stretch, a year ahead, SRoberts was big time coming out of HS in SC with JoJo English who played in the league. Shaq was the best big as soon as he stepped on campus. Both were little lazy but Stanley was even moreso(no disrespect). SR was just as talented as Shaq early on but not as driven. I played a lot of pickup on campus, Shaq was the most dominant big i have ever seen, then and now, that included Alonzo Mourning who was in S.Roberts class of 88’, out of VA.

I was a kid when he was blackballed and never followed up much on Mahmoud. This is the 2nd interview I’ve watched with him. The other was with Kwame. Great interview!!! Nonetheless, I love Mahmoud! He is an icon and an idol. May this brother continue to be blessed. He was the Steph when I was a kid. Bless you Mahmoud!!

THIS brother has the most amazing story! I knew his story but I didn't KNOW his story and this is the 1st time that I've heard HIM tell his story. He is truly amazing. I remember him at LSU and he was a straight killa on the court. I heard about his disease but I didn't know that it was to that degree. Much respect to this brother.

I appreciate him sharing his Tourette struggles. There are a lot of similarities with OCD, which I have. People have no idea how hard life can be when everything needs to be done perfectly or redone until it's perfect. Like he said, taking forever just to be ready to go outside or leave the house. And this is for guys, with no makeup or any of that other shit lol
