Ground-based video of the first flight of my Supreme Endeavour, a scratch-built 7.7 inch diameter 12.5 feet long rocket built for my Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA) Level 3 Certification. The motor load for the flight was a central Aerotech L2200G and two Loki Research J320R's which were airstarted. The flight occured on June 6, 2009 at the METRA range in Pine Island, NY. On board video is also posted.

WOW! So proud of you on this terrific launch & recovery! Did this with little rockets when my boys were small back in the 1970s and it was educational and fun. This large rocket takes it to a whole new level.

I don't know how these guys made their fuel, but in the late fifties we used powered zinc and sulfur for small five foot rockets. They would obtain thousands of feet. We did this under the Pacific Rocket society. Others used liquid oxygen and thiokol, a rubber like substance which theoretically would go 100 miles. I never saw it launch. We built small, six inch, jobs that went 2 thousand feet with potassium permanganate and powdered aluminum.

Today most amateurs use potassium nitrate and sugar. Lower performance but cheaper to make. A group called sugar shot to space is attempting to make a sugar rocket that reaches an altitude of above 100km.

I'm familiar with the zinc-sulfur rockets. Most were copies of Capt. Bertrand R. Brinley's "Beta" from his "Rocket Manual for Amateurs", a paperback published in 1960. George Dosa of the southern CA RRS (Reaction Research Society, founded in the 1940s) was particularly devoted to these. Zn+S rockets were used as end burners and had a burn rate of 90 in/sec. The rockets jackrabbited off the pad with a BOOM that sounded like a train crash. I thought it was kind of the upscaled equivalent of putting a firecracker under a tin can.

Well I got a lump in my throat, I just love eccentric people who do this stuff, they make it look simple but it's months of hard work with little or no backing. Captain Cook would have been proud to see the name. Just a pity there was no onboard cameras.

You do DO need to get an FAA waiver to launch a rocket like this. It's size and maximum altitude put it outside the range of what you can launch without notifying the FAA. It's not hard to get a waiver, you just need to understand the paperwork. If you are part of a club launch, like here, the club can get a blanket waiver for a certain altitude and you don't have to worry about getting one yourself.

If you fly a rocket like this horizontally - even at a 60 degree angle - it would hit the ground within 100' or less. Fins on an acceleration-stabilized rocket make zero lift and gravity overcomes its trajectory REAL fast.

High Power Rocketry requires FAA waivers for vehicles over 1500 grams or with over 125 grams propellant. It is possible to acquire a waiver as an individual, but it helps to be part of a rocket club with the experience and contacts (plus you get to watch their rockets too!) www.nar.org or www.tripoli.org for more info!
