Ballistol is a terrific, non-toxic CLP-type product for firearms, knives and tools. It also has a number of other intriguing applications. I’ve used it for years and have gotten used to the strong licorice smell. However, my wife still hates the signature “aroma,” LOL! 😂

@@John5.56 In Germany it's pretty common to use it for that. Also we use it for "lighter stuff" like WD-40, you can remove Rust with it or losen bolts with it. Also you can use it to groom hair. It actually has 1000 purposes - But of course it's not always the best in something. But with "Nähmaschinenöl", "Ballistol" and the Oils for your vehicles you have pretty much everything you need for home projects. Edit: Theres also Ballistol for Electirc Stuff, which is pretty handy because you can easily remove it from a Connector or so, but it seals the area against water. So, if you need to seal a connector or so off from water or wanna make sure that the shrink tube is water tight -> Use this Ballistol.

Interesting...might have to check it out. I usually give my tools a wipe with some LPS2 on a rag. We use it for lathe setups all the time and it works great as a lubricant/corrosion inhibitor. LPS is really well liked in the aerospace industry too, so can't go wrong IMO.

On all the metal parts of my firearms, I apply a small amount of Ballistol then wipe it clean. It leaves a slight sheen and prevents rust. Over time, it absorbs into the metal causing a seasoned skillet effect. But for cleaning I use a dedicated gun solvent and for oiling, M Pro 7. I can tell you if you have a squeaky door hinge, spray some Ballistol, wipe up the excess, and that squeak will be gone for years. It's great as a general household lubricant. I just find it a little too thin as a gun lube for highly stressed parts. I have a medical syringe and needle I keep filled with it to use on trigger springs, switches, pins, etc. But for rails, bolts, etc., the M Pro 7 is more viscous and stays where it's applied. I know some people swear by high temp wheel bearing grease on their ar-15's, or Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil. Haven't tried either. If you ask 100 gun owners what they use for cleaning and lubrication, you'll get 100 different answers.

I rather really enjoy that Ballistol smell. Here in South Africa our packaging looks very different, just plain red with white lettering, looks very old school, like from the 50's which I like as it has that era mentality of its perfectly engineered to last a lifetime. You can even use on mild skin irritations or rashes, heard some people use it for psoriasis, have no idea if it works.. Def gonna try a watered down version

I recently purchased a pressol 500ml oiler and it had germany stamped on the bottom, I was going to use the ballistol until I saw that video, I'm using a mix of oils in it, any way of resolving the issue? Looking forward to your next review..

I've been using those precision oilers that are just stainless steel and plastic. The ballistol didn't ruin the oiler, it just kind of tarnished the brass. Probably if I left it in there for a couple of months it might have dissolved enough to damage the seals.

I can speak a little bit about the use in firearms. I use this stuff on my shotguns, because there are a lot of metal parts in them that are joined with wood, so I don't have to worry as much about overspray, and the oil will clean wood and soak in for good protection against moisture. It's not the best cleaner for heavy or solidified burnt gunpowder residue, though. You have to let it sit for awhile, whereas something like Breakfree CLP (with more aggressive solvents) will chew through the hardened stuff (and cut grease) in half the time. As a cleaner, you're really using Ballistol to grab and gather the dirt that you remove mechanically with a brush or abrasive. Ballistol's lubricity comes from the mineral oil, but it's too light a lubricant for very tight gun parts that move against each other under load. For those cases, a grease is better -- gun grease/cosmoline. If I'm putting firearms into locked & sealed storage, I like to use Ballistol as the "hibernation" lubricant, because it doesn't seem to leave a residue as it breaks down over time, or release water vapor in the process. In short, it's good stuff, but inevitably you have to use a second product to best cover all the bases, whether for lubrication or cleaning, in my experience. Fortunately, we are blessed with an immense variety of products and can pick from that diverse selection to fit the need. All-in-one cleaners/lubricants like Ballistol or WD-40 are most valuable as products for when you don't know what to use and need to use _something_. No house, garage or shop is complete without a can of either one (or both!), and I always seem to have a couple cans of Ballistol around the house. I'm always surprised that more people don't know about the stuff, as it does pretty well at a lot of things while being very safe to use. Thanks for making this video. It's very informative and highlights all of the attributes that make the stuff so good.

I just saw Abom use Boefield T9 to protect a metal piece of work from flash rusting while awaiting delivery a few days ago. I have a set of pliers that are getting some surface rust from sitting without use (chrome finish). Any recommendation for Ballistol vs Boefield T9 or other? Love your channel, I'm looking at picking up a set of Wera hex-plus after seeing you use them. Thanks for all the info!
@GermanToolReviews
@GermanToolReviews 6 жыл бұрын
Never used Boefield before so I can't really say, but I'm sure if it was for short term use I wouldn't expect much different result if used to prevent flash rusting. Usually when I take things out of the sonic cleaner I use the aerosol Ballistol to spray all of the precision ground surfaces to prevent flash rusting.

@@GermanToolReviews That's a typo, he meant 'BoeShield T9', apparently it was developed by Boeing for use on airplanes. It's a paraffin wax based dry lubricant, but unlike other wax products it's very clean and basically invisible. It's great for some uses where you want a very clean, thin, and non-oily coating, I use it mainly on my bike chain. I think it would be fine for pliers, but usually I use some synthetic grease (Super Lube) for that instead.

After this experience and waste of money and that smell that hit me every time I opened the cabinet, I can't remember how well it worked because the whole experience was dominated by a terrible stinky mess- even just thinking about opening that cabinet infuriated me. Ballistol doesn't clean for shit on guns... Comparing it to hoppes.. I have used a lot of solvent cleaners for guns and hoppes always does best.. It's least damaging cleans the best and has a good smell.. It's just strong on the scent area so be cautious.. But ballistol is an amazing lube just not very good at cleaning.. Regardless of sit time... It will work.. But not to my standards of actual clean the aerosol smells like compete shit and I hate the smell of it. The bottle smelled weird at first but it's ok now.. But not the aerosol.. And since its aerosol it's a conprimise of the real product.. Get both and be happy for the variety of uses and areas they will work in..
