I changed the hose in front of the transaxle on my 420 as it was leaking also. It's shocking how much they want for a rubber hose. I opted for an oil type hose which worked well. If my tractor was in as good condition as yours, I may have paid the extra. My 420 didn't run, was painted poorly in flat black and had 2650 hours but I paid only $350 and it came with the 4-way blade. After changing trans fluid, I cleaned tank, put on new fuel lines and suction parts, added electric fuel pump, rebuilt intake manifold, cleaned carb, decarboned the heads, piston top, and valves, adjusted the valves, points, and gap on plugs. It started right up and runs smooth.

That's great stuff man, a little elbow grease and (sometimes) a few dollars - you have a solid working piece of equipment. When I bought mine it came with a clapped out mower deck and a brand new 4-way 54" blade. Overall, even with the purchase price, money and time spent - those things still are a great value. Hey Todd - thanks for another good video on maintenance. I enjoy how in depth you go into this thing. If I can odd some insight to a few. 1. Full Synthetic tends to have less Zinc content than traditional oil. Zinc aids in lubricity. 2. Don’t see them often, but there’s a factory belly pan installed on the frame that helps prevent all that gunk buildup in front of the transaxle. 3. Per the manual, Deere calls for LOW VIS hygard. Not sure what implements you have for it. Looks like a show piece, but would like to see you talk about the mower decks and how to keep them in good running order.

Hey wtfisakilometer - thank you for your thoughtful reply. To answer your questions: I do plan to do a vid on the zinc content in oils in the future. I did not know there was a belly pan option on these. I'm currently working on the 60" mower deck restoration and video to follow soon, so stay tuned 🙂 Also have a few other implements as well to go with it

@@ToddsHouseofSpeed-uq5sp can’t wait! Here’s the part number for the belly pan from Deere. (Not sure if they are stocked) M87462 Additionally x8 screws with washer. AM102597 And grommet nut insert x8 M63775. I’m currently grabbing parts for a deck restore. The daggon deck chute is over 300 bucks. 😵‍💫

Todd could you do a video on steering and front end please? My steering has a lot of play in it. Love the videos. Bought my 430 about a year ago and sure need help learning how to work on it. Thanks!

If you're talking about the transaxle oil fill - yes it is. As a teenager - I was Blessed to have John Deere factory training as I worked for the local JD. There is a reason they designed it that way, but it may not make sense to the rest of us.😉
