Burgundian Ducal Anthem - Hymne Ducal de la Bourgogne

This song is the unofficial anthem of the Burgundian region (of France).
Its origin is supposed to have been a common military song among the Picards and Burgundian troops following the death of the Duke Charles the Bold and the annexation of the country by Louix XI King of France, in 1479.
Following the death of the duke and the fall of the Duchy of Burgundy, the troops, who fought the French for years refused to obey the King of France and went to the rightful inheritor, Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, begging him to go to war against France to reclaim the Duchy.
Nowaday, this song is ironically part of the French army songs.

Cette chanson est l'hymne non officiel de la région de Bourgogne (en France).
Son origine est supposée remonter à une chanson militaire populaire chez les troupes Picardes et Bourguignonnes, à la suite de la mort du Duc Charles le Téméraire et l'annexion du Duché par Louis XI Roi de France, en 1479.
A la suite de la mort du Duc et la chute du Duché de Bourgogne, les troupes, qui ont combattu pendant des années les Français ont refusé d'obéir au Roi de France et ont rejoint l'héritier légitime, L'Empereur du Saint Empire Romain, Maximilian I, pour le supplier d'aller en guerre contre la France et reprendre le Duché.
De nos jours, cette chanson fait ironiquement partie du répertoire des chansons militaires Françaises.

It’s the anthem of the oldest French Army Regiment : 1er Regiment d’Infanterie. The régiment roots is from the Bandes de Picardie created in 1479. Which is the oldest military unit in France.

La Basse Flandre a été conquise par l'Autriche et Besançon et Salins sont tombé au mains des français, dont les picards y ont bu tout le vin. Il s'agit du chant le plus ancien concernant un fait d'arme du régiment. C'est un peu du troll en fait

Burgundy and Flanders were French fiefs. The Austrians successfully stole Flanders but fortunately couldn't conquer Burgundy.

@@TheVoodooMaker Well, Burgundy had originally some measure of sovereignty thanks to its Dukes. France conquered the Duchy of Burgundy in 1477 and the County of Burgundy in 1678 so I wouldn't say that the Austrians were the worse stealers. 😉

My mother, who was born in France in 1945, learned this hymn as a girl in her school's all-girls choir. She still sings it, to herself when she's cooking or cleaning :) So it's doubly odd for me to hear men's voices singing this hymn: I never knew it was a soldier's hymn meant to be sung by men, and I associate the melody with a woman's soprano voice, which gives the hymn a much softer, sad mood, very different from the martial tone of men. Well, war IS sad, as the lyrics plainly state: "Tel parle de la guerre/Mais ne sait pas que c'est; Je vous jure mon âme/que c'est un piteux fait" (Loose translation: "Some speak of war yet know not what it is; I do swear on my soul, war is a sorry thing").

Very cool. Some comments: The picture is Charles the bold, right. He died in 1477 before this song was written, methinks. The duke of Austria, future emperor Maximilian I, who is in the low countries (1:13), married Charles' daughter Mary of Burgundy. I keep thinking about the ORF series Maximilian, das Spiel von Macht und Liebe. And of course the cross of Burgundy was the official Spanish flag in the time of the Austrias.

Of course the song was written after he died, afterall, it's a beg for the Emperor to liberate Burgundy following the death of the duke and following French invasion. While the Cross of Burgundy became the flag of the Spanish Empire, it was probably used by the Duchy along others flags when it was a thing. Afterall, it was also a common landsknecht flag.

@@MaitreKorda The cross of Burgundy became the official Spanish flag when the duke of Burgundy became king of the Spains (Castille and Aragon), after the death of his grandfather Ferdinand the catholic in 1516.. A few years later, Charles V was also elected holy Roman emperor.

Any greatness provided by the dukes on Burgundy must be attributed to the Kings of France, since it is John II the Good of France who bestowed the duchy on his second son. They seceded from the kingdom by felony, having reduced the King Charles the Victorious to state of extreme weakness by supporting the English invaders. @@maxk5065 la Bourgogne était un duché Français qui est devenu très distant de la couronne de France durant la guerre de 100 ans , ils ont même aidé les anglais suites à l'assassinat du duc par le roi de France suite à cela ils étaient de facto indépendant et le pays le plus riche d'Europe mais ils ont été vaincus par leurs voisins et ont définiment cessé d'exister suite à une guerre de succession car il n'avaient pas d'hériter masculin

Autant les traditions, c'est très bien, autant vouloir faire mourir l'Empire pour sa petite fierté "d'oppressé" me parait contre-productif ... La province, dont je fais partie, ne la ramenait pas tant quand la France entière pouvait se satisfaire de toutes sortes de gloire ... Certes, je suis contre le jacobinisme et l'état centralisé, je serais même contre le concept de nation-état à une certaine mesure, mais je refuse de voir les déceptions maquillés en fiertés détruire ce qui est unis depuis César.

The flag is called "Cross of Burgundy". It was originally used by the House of Valois who held Burgundy. Later, The House of Habsburgs inheirited the title. As they were the rulers of the Spanish Empire, they adopted this flag as the national one, since they retained the title.

@@harclinze1514 I am no linguist, but I think it's neither "si" nor "ainsi" but "ci-marchons", as in "ci-gît [qqun]", literally meaning "there lays [smb]". The correct translation would be "There walking/there we walk".

@@harclinze1514 Just looked the lyrics up on ten different sites including military and scouts ones, and went through two thesis on Middle French lost locutions, and you were absolutly right. It's "si" (ainsi, autresi, issi etc...), and not "ci" as "ici", "there" (as in "ci-contre", "ci-là" etc...) nor "s'y" as "se+y" (s'y rendre, s'y prendre . Correct translation is indeed "thus". Shit it took me a few years to realise the "reîtres" mentioned in the song refer to Reiter (/ˈʀaɪ̯tɐ/) heavy cavalry troops. Why are Francophones completely incapable of pronouncing non-French words?

because no language is able to hold words from another without adapting them. "Ritters" is a german word, those sounds arent natural for us, so we needed an adaptation. Moreover, politically, it was not sustainable to use a foreign word to design the foreign soldiers devasting your land. we could have used "chevalier" wich is the equivalent of "ritter" in french ("those who ride horses" litteraly), but "chevalier" in french is related to a very strong image of honour and bravour (two french words by the way), coming from the crusade so it is not adapted to describe the "ritters" and their deeds on our lands. as I said, no one can pronounce words from an other language without learning the slightest bit of it. for exemple, back during the fall of the roman Empire, the germanic word "werra" entered in Gaul, the gauls adapted it in "Guerra" because the initial consonnnant was too hard to pronounce for them. later, during the XIth century, a variant of this very word, something that was pronounced like "ouare" (in the region of Normandy in the kingdom of France), entered the british Isles as the word "war". that is how languages evolve. Moreover, do I have to precise that most of english vocabulary is just broken french and latin words.

Funny thing is, incorporated french words, idioms or expressions are present in every european langage, but so badly spelled or pronounced that we can never guess it is/was french in the first place. You don't see us bitch about it though...
