MAJOR COTTAGE RENOVATION UPDATE! Painting Wood Walls

Our cottage has so many amazing and unique attributes. One of which is the beautiful wood used to build the home. The problem was that, in our eyes, the cottage was experiencing a bit of wood overload. Wood in every square inch of the home drew your focus away from the pieces that really mattered. In this remodel update, we decide to selectively paint some of our wood paneled walls to lighten and enlarge the space, and to draw your attention to the beautiful post and beam structure of our country cabin.

Definitely a good call on painting the walls white. It does make the ceiling and floor stand out without being too much.

Now you can add art to walls.🤟😀❤the built ins are nice...remove some in basement to give you more space...cobalt or ink blue would look awesome on your railing and steps on the porch...

Before you go any further, try removing the sealer on the wood and apply a semi-transparent white stain that will give you the light you desire yet allow the beautiful wood grain & knots to show through. This will preserve the craftsman charm and give your interior a richer feel.

That’s what I would do too. Just remember to coat the knots with a couple of layers of shellack prior to staining, to avoid any bleeding.

This would be my preference, too. I think the white paint was a bit too white. I would maybe have chosen something light, maybe a bit tinted, like a soft greenish or beige. And I don't like the black and white furniture with the white walls very much at the moment. But to lighten the space and emphasize some wooden features over others is a good direction.

The walls look pretty good maybe a little too white. The black corner seating I don't really care for and the white table is definitely not the right color in that room it clashes with the white on the walls.

When you said you was painting the wood walls, I was like NOOOOOO!!!! But then seeing how it looks now, it does brighten up the space and I love how you left each panel of the wooden walls still pretty obvious. I love!!! Anything that keeps it feeling like a cottage and not a modern update. I wish I had a place like this.

Introducing a lot of white might make it seem more on trend now but it'll look dated in the long run. Considering the setting I think leaving it natural was a better bet.

Looks excellent. We had 37-year-old natural wood (knotty pine) kitchen cabinets that were looking pretty bad. My wife convinced me to take out the decorative grooves in the cabinet doors wood and paint them white. It was a huge amount of work but what an improvement. The white made our kitchen look much wider. The white is so clean and ugly no longer jumps out at us when we enter our kitchen. I love natural wood but there is such a thing as wood overload.

I was kinda hoping you chose a type of whitewash paint that allows the grain and knots to show through. It looks good though and definitely more cozy cottagy.

WOW! Good choice. You're right, the stained wood on the ceiling, walls, and floor was too much. You now created a nice separation that gives a sense of elegance to the cottage. I like how you kept the vertical seams. If you choose to place artwork on the walls, it will stand out. Enjoy.

I did the same thing here at home. My wood was much darker, almost black. I left the details of the windows and doors. I only made one wall but I will do more. It turned out amazing. Congratulations from tropical forest in Brasil.

I must admit, I liked the wood better. I feel that the house was “one with the woods”. It was like the soul of the forest. In the woods, made of wood. I’m not sure if the previous owner would be pleased. And I know that shouldn’t matter but, I remember how much her design meant to you when you first revealed the property.

I liked the wood look best for a cottage (and also liked those unique shelves) but you all are young and it’s welcoming to see a young spin on the traditional. It looks beautiful painted too!

First thing that came to my mind after seeing the house tour video: paint the walls white. It lightens up the space and everything is not the same repetitive color. Looks fantastic and the room really pops out and looks more open! Hope you enjoy your home to the fullest...

I had a similar cabin in the woods and the “kiddos” that bought it have done the same thing with painting certain walls and I was so impressed with how they turned out. Great job!

Add a pendant light over the dining table. Put a sconce over hole in wall. Hope you kept those drawers that were mounted on the wall to use else where. Everything looks really nice. Maybe paint the ceiling between the beams white.

Your home is beautiful. I grew up with natural pine paneling with very few windows... dark dark and dark ! I love how it painting the walls does brightens up the room. This will improve the overall feeling you have in your home. 👍🏼

I like them white, but I would have mounted a plastered drywall over the wood paneling - thus preserving it while brightening everything. It would have cost more, but would also have been reversible. All in all, it does look nicer than the overwhelming and darkening wood.

Looks great. I want my sister to paint her dark stained wood paneling in her living room because the room is so dark. She says she would rather remove the paneling and repair the walls and then paint it white but it’s been nine years I think an afternoon of painting would make a world of difference but it’s her place 🤷🏽‍♂️. *note she has dark carpet and furniture and although there is a west wall with some windows there are those 1950’s metal awnings over them.

Nice, judicious use of paint. Eager to see what’s planned these days for the kitchen (and where the fridge ends up... refrigerators are a big planning issue. Ask me how I know LOL.)

Wow Alex you just blew Palmer’s videos out of the water( BAM)💥!!!! Excellent choice it makes the ceiling and floors POP!!! And at first I thought oh no you didn’t- but it looks awesome.... Again don’t ask for advice do it the way you two want it.. Your doing a great job so far.... And Palmer you just keep putting Alex in front of the camera and you behind it and you’re views will skyrocket... What a sweetheart!!! And you’re not bad either Palmer🤣🤣LOL ... Really you two are AWSOME thanks for the update!!!

I've worked in a lot of interiors all over New England. Great choice in keeping the individual pieces of wood visible. Since you're mixing contemporary with rustic, your cottage will look beautiful with your plans to take down the wall between the kitchen and taking your time living in the house before redoing everything. Most people rush this process(!) so good for you. I can see lots of books in that shelf with unique accessories. And the eating nook walls would be fabulous with an eclectic gallery wall you can change out for the seasons. Keeping the space fairly neutral allows you to bring in colors and patterns of the season in soft furnishings as well. She's a beauty!
