Facts I worked on 3 tugs boats as a deckhand and it’s no joke. The hardest job I ever did in my life! You literally have people’s life’s in your hands... so much stuff you have to remember and do correctly or you can get killed or kill everybody easily! Like the deckhands are the what keep the boat moving. The captains wouldn’t be shit without deckhands! Ask anybody that works on boats and they’ll tell you the same thing!

I used to commercial fish out of Kodiak and I knew of several crab boats that just had a dedicated engineer/cook. But those were really big boats, double mains and double gen-sets. As the engineer, you were expected to maintain everything in the engine room clean enough to eat off of, so constant wipe downs and monitoring everything. You had to be good at not just engines, but welding, electrical, plumbing, fabrication, you name it.....and up in the galley, you better be a good fucking cook too.

@@alec4672 That is good, you are in the right direction. However, maintenance is one thing....but are you an actual mechanic? Can you tear down a bigass Caterpillar C32, run diagnostics, troubleshoot, are familiar with hydraulics, pump systems, commercial battery grids, refrigeration, heat exchangers, forced air induction, reduction gear....just to name a few? There will also be many times that you will be required to perform your duties during severe weather while out at sea, high winds and hellacious waves battering your vessel relentlessly while you struggle just to stay on your feet. Turning wrenches in those conditions is no fucking picnic....but that is your job. When shit breaks down (and it will) you have to fix it regardless of how shitty the weather is.....your life and the lives of your crewmates depends on it.

@@alec4672 sign up for MSC (military sealift command) they'll train you to be an engineer on a ship. You aren't forced to commit to it for multiple years like in the actual military. Can make pretty damn good money because tjere is nothing to do so you just work a bunch of overtime out of boredom. Some people walk away wmaking 90k after a year at the lowest level position.

A fire is important... But in the engine room it's all hands on deck... The for could be from the engine or hydraulic pumps or generators... If hydraulics are down, rudders can't move, engines are down steering is limited and in rough waters it's like nothing and if generators go down, no lighting to see where you're goin or anything..

If they can afford maintenance, having mechanics and techs go over everything and grease what needs to be greased takes money and if they had a lean year, they might be able to put things off and depend on luck nothing happens.

I know its 7 months later but the electrical generator is on the other end of that engine, If the engine has to be shut down while they work on the clutch for the hydraulic system then they have no pumps either.

They usually set a "string" which is several pots connected by one rope. So they complete recovering the string first, and then replace a new string before moving on.

The short answer is yes. If the numbers of crab warrant it, the pots are rebaited and set back. You set the gear in such a manner that you can try to determine if the biomass is moving and if so, in which direction. You can then move your gear to where you think they are going. Hope that makes sense.

@@battaglino77 WHAT? The fishing you see here is single pot fishing - each pot has its own line and bouys, the pots are not connected to each other. You are describing long-lining with pot gear which is usually reserved for super deep water fishing for Golden Crab.
