Are major NASCAR Playoff Schedule CHANGES Incoming? The NASCAR Cup Series 2025 schedule is only a few short weeks away from being publicly announced and with it there would of course be rumors swirling. This being blown up more by the DBC crew and Freddie Kraft claiming that up to three tracks will be added into the Playoffs, replacing three of the current ones.

I still think just splitting the playoffs in half would be great. Drop the number of drivers that can get in to 12, no more win and you’re in, after the first 5 playoff races the playoff field gets cut in half and the final 6 race for the championship over 5 races. Oh also… no more “playoffs”, it’s nascar, it will always be The Chase. The proper name should return.
@rebelsoul5980

Make the final 10 races the "playoffs". No eliminations or rounds. Only 10 drivers make the "playoffs" and they get 10 races to win the championship. This elimination bullshit is just that BS! No other Motorsport has a "playoff".

@TylerReuter
@TylerReuter 11 күн бұрын
NASCAR won't ever go back to any prior iterations of the chase/playoffs, so they need to do one of two things. One, make the final "round" 3 races. One race, winner take all is bs, and not representative of who the true champion should be. But if that doesn't happen, allow the champ 4 drivers to collect stage points. For example, if Denny dominates the race, wins both stages, and chokes the final restart to Larson and finishes second, Denny (possibly) still scored more than Larson, and should be scored as such, and be crowned champion.
@spd-kv6sd
@spd-kv6sd 11 күн бұрын
Or just make the championship race between more drivers. I forsee 10. But the actual thing I'm ditching in my "fantasy NASCAR", that I use for my stories and roleplays, is the stage cautions and the "Win and you're in" for the play-offs. The cutoff line just falls at the 16th driver in the standings. Well, technically winners have little chances of not qualifying since the winner earns 100 points and the 15th earns 2 with all the others that finish earning 1. But it could happen if someone has a season like Dani Suarez has this year. Technically, it eliminates complete one-off flukes.

As a Pennsylvanian, Pocono as a playoff race in late September/early October does pique my interest, not gonna lie. But I think I'd still want either Loudon or Dover moved back into the playoffs. (Especially Dover, because we've had such terrible luck with weather in that late April slot.) I can see Watkins Glen staying if they finally give the Charlotte Oval its second date back. Regarding Homestead...I recall RealRadman talking constantly about how Homestead DESPERATELY needs to renovate its facilities around the racetrack before it can even be considered as a finale again. Here's to hoping they put money into it because that race is one of the hottest tickets in NASCAR right now.

the original Bristol concrete configuration (between 1992 and 2007) was a one groove racetrack where the fast lane was right at the bottom of the track. passing another car on the high side was nearly impossible so being aggressive with the bump and run was usually the winning strategy. there were some wild races (the '99 night race with Earnhardt and Terry Labonte comes to mind) and they couldn't put enough seats in Bristol for all of the fans that wanted to see it. in the early 00's NASCAR made some big changes to the cars with more downforce, larger spoilers, and harder tires, and because of that aero package drivers could no longer run that close to each other without washing up the track and the bump-and-run was gone. SMI decided to reconfigure the track in '07 to progressive banking hoping to open a second and possibly a third racing groove on the track. they got their wish - drivers could run any lane they wanted to, but the racing wasn't very good and fans stopped buying tickets. and every change both SMI and NASCAR have made since then to bring back the magic of the old Bristol have just made things worse. the next gen car on the short tracks really hasn't been good overall. Iowa turned into a decent race because of the new pavement in the corners gave the cars some grip, but once they lay down an entirely new surface it will become a parade until the asphalt ages. Richmond has fallen off so far since they stopped using the sealant that they can't tear enough seats out of there and are on track to lose a race next season. the all star races at North Wilkesboro since the return on both the old and new surfaces have been complete snoozers, while Martinsville still puts on a decent show.

It’s beyond ridiculous that a driver could have championship form all year, then get to the final race of the year and STILL have to duke it out with 3 other drivers for the title. One mistake, cut a tire, get caught up in someone’s crash, etc. = season ruined. The point structure should allow a driver having a great season to clinch the title with a few races to go.

Only issue with moving Pocono to the playoffs is competing against college football (Penn State mainly) and the Eagles. Those two have tremendous fan bases, moving Pocono to the playoffs could affect attendance and TV ratings. Even Dover too, it’s close to Philly. New Hampshire might the better choice to move back to the playoffs. Plus fans there love the weather better in September

the Bristol night race will never be anywhere except for the playoffs. It's a great track for the cutoff races, and I could see it getting moved to the regular season finale to be honest, which in my opinion is still mostly a playoff race. It could also work as the next to last race of the season, which would really help in general as Martinsville has (sadly) proven to be an awful track since the Gen 7 started (and since wall riding was banned).

@JayStephens8 Agree..... Now here is my twist....36 Races right...Points will only count in 33 of them, So 3 mulligans per driver, twist is by the next Tuesday Driver and team must decide if the race the weekend before is gonna count for points or be a mulligan..... Lets use Kyle Busch for example, finishes 27th the weekend before, if it was week 4 in the season they may not use this as a mulligan, and take the points, They may have engine failure or crash or both that would be a worse finish..Now catch is, it may cost them a championship if say 30 points decided it, because they picked NOT to use this as a mulligan and it ended up being his worse finish of the year....Remember every driver MUST use 3 mulligans... Just my 2 cents...

It doesn’t really matter. It’s not like the playoffs are an attraction that brings in viewers. Nobody really cares about it. Numbers don’t lie, and numbers show that the playoffs don’t matter. They actually bring in less viewers. So if you move Bristol out of the playoffs, the same people will watch because it’s Bristol. You can love the playoffs or hate them, but you can’t pretend that they’re important to viewers and expect to be taken seriously. From an “eyes on the sport” perspective, literally nobody cares.

If Bristol somehow stays in the playoffs, then make it the day race. I can see this working out better especially since it would still keep them close to Charlotte for the end of the season. A Saturday Night race in the middle of College Football season is not a wise decision and is likely a key factor as to why it’s underperforming viewership wise. Not to mention that this year’s date (9/21) is likely going to have another major Tennessee Vols football game on at the same time when they travel to Norman for Heuple’s homecoming against Oklahoma. Flipping the night race and day race could be an interesting shakeup. Though June would be a no go date wise since they’re dealing with NHRA early in the month for Thunder Valley Nationals. July-August for Night Race then maybe October for Food City 500 could work.

I would argue Michigan is the least likely track. As someone from the area, our weather that late in the year is either hot as hell, or torrential downpour. At least with the August date, that's right in the middle of our "dry season" so the threat of rain isn't really there.

There is a 9th option when it comes to adding/replacing playoff races & that is a track that the Cup Series has never been to before in Portland. The Xfinity Series has drawn good crowds there the past 2 seasons & it is time for that track to get a Cup Series date as a way of breaking into the PNW market. Adding it to the playoffs would be a good way to draw fans in & allow the track to host another major series following Indycar's race there a month before. There is also the fact that the track would be highly motivated to host the Cup Series especially after last week's announcement that Formula E won't be coming back there next year in favor of doing a race at Homestead on the oval.

I doubt Indycar schedules their date 2 weeks after NASCAR . Maybe Gateway to Pocono's slot, and Pocono to the playoffs.

I've been saying this about Pocono for YEARS! It HAS to be in the play-offs, but probably not in October since some said it could snow in October in that area? I don't know if it's so nonetheless. But the reason I want it in the play-offs is indeed what you're saying about it! It simply is the hardest track! The hardest oval at least. Also, if like I wish Lausitzring - the European version of Pocono - enters the schedule, that would make this race even more play-off worthy! Especially since if NASCAR would want to go to Europe, the best time seems to be June. It would coincide with potential bye weeks after the Charlotte 600 and supposedly before the July 4th race, but that's how I envision it.

I hope Bristol gets moved out of the playoffs and out of college football season. I am in a college marching band, and last year it was the only race I didn't watch because I had to be at a game. Also, it doesn't make much sense from a ratings standpoint to put the Saturday night race during the point in the year when Saturday nights have the most TV competition. And it'll probably mean one less day race in the summer thats 100 degrees

I guess I dont see Texas being added to the Playoffs. Yes big market but now you are talking a Nascar weekend going against the Dallas Cowboys( i know they arent that great but they are the cowboys) and if thinking a Saturday night you have college football, and Fridays high school so all the nascar series would struggle. Also with the Texas Rangers winning the World Series in 2023 you gotta think that would be competition for Nascar fans. Rangers are not usually anything that time of year but first year after winning, people will be paying attention.

Atlanta out for Rockingham's revival. (Would be cool, but probably not happening.) The other has to be either Watkins Glen back to it's regular date or Homestead back to the spring. I wish they'd only race at tracks once a season so they could have more variety throughout, but that's just me.

That'd be 3 tracks (Charlotte, North Wilksboro, and Rockingham) in NC. Plus 2 more (Bristol and Martinsville) within a couple of hours, AND 3 more (Richmond, Atlanta, and Darlington) not too much further than that. It'd heavily oversaturate that market. I wouldn't expect to see Rockingham back in Cup as long as all the others are still in it.
