In this video, I also document the 1000-foot ship American Spirit as it loads iron ore pellets, watching the ore pour from a transfer chute into a hold. But that's not all! I’m also announcing a contest where you can win fantastic prizes from the American Steamship Company. To enter, simply comment below with your favorite American Steamship Company ship and why it’s your favorite. You don’t need to write a lot - just share your thoughts. The fact that a major shipping company has reached out to you, and in turn to all us fans and viewers from all around the world, is a tribute to all your hard work. Come rain or shine (and snow!) you are out there filming these large ships coming in and out of Duluth. Very much look forward to seeing your films when you sail on board their ships, what a privilege. I have worked in the marine insurance industry which has its world centre in the City of London for almost all my working life. Being made redundant in 2000 broke my heart to leave a fascinating and close knit community of work colleagues. And as a steam railway enthusiast Duluth is very famous for the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway with its massive "Yellowstone" steam locos, gone but never forgotten.

WOW, three long and two short to ASC, and David and Kevin for joining in a partnership with Captain Mike and look forward to having a wonderful chance to learn more about these monster K footers we all love. I’ve been “taken” by the Burns Harbor wondering if it is named after a true harbor. This partnership is going to teach us all so much about these wonderful ships! I went to a luncheon this week that ended up being a ‘paint party’. The idea was to portray a sunrise over water. I chose to try to replicate those I have seen at the Duluth Ship Canal, it’s not too bad.

The American Century: It was built in Sturgeon Bay, WI, where I was born and raised, in the year I graduated from High School, 1981. Five of the six lakers on the list were built in consecutive years at Bay Shipbuilding, Sturgeon Bay, WI. Thank you Boat Friends, Mike, and David and Kevin from American Steamship Company!

The one that I can remember as a 13-year-old man with my grandparents going to the Great Lakes in Duluth MN watching the ships my grandfather pointed out the ("* THE BURNS HARBOR*") to me I wished I was able to work on one but being in a wheelchair did not allow me to work on a great lakes ship. Being a part of this group of great people I can see the ship at least even though now, I am in hospice care I wish I could be a part of the American Steamship Company because I would like see these ships many times and now I can because of this channel. There is no doubt everyone will learn so much from this partnership.....and have a great deal of fun in the process. Personally I'd like to learn more about each position not only on the ships, but also in the silent support roles David alluded to. I'd enjoy hearing from crew members and Home Office staff who have worked up through the ranks.....and how they did it. And pick up some insight as to who decides the cargo routes? Who schedules the ship maintenance? Having a 33 year career insurance, I'd be interested in knowing what insurance challenges does ASC encounter and what position within the organization does risk managment? Who keeps track of all the shipping/enviornmental regulations? What position is responsible for onboard training? I love learning about company organizations. Again, welcome Kevin and David. You and your company will really help increase a personal connection to Mike's channel. ASC serves such an important role in transporting bulk commodities to industries in the United States.

American Integrity. This was the first ship we saw as a family coming into Duluth at night almost 6 years ago. Now my youngest is 7 with autism and obsessed with the ships. The web cams are constantly on the tv and he can name most if the ships by sight. Thanks for everything you do to bring us along for the ride.

The Walter J McCarthy is a favorite for me as it was one of the very first 1000 footers I saw when my husband, at the time, and I were spending a few days talking pictures of freighters back in the 80's.

Amazing behind-the-scene video Mike! This is so great that you had the chance to talk to David (and welcome to David and Kevin of course) and let them share his knowledge. Love how passionate he is about his job. It was lovely to hear also your personal experience on how you fell in love with these amazing ships and city. The angles you can catch from your boat are great and really provides us a great variety of different perspectives (love this one with the iron ore being loaded on the AS). The MV Indiana Harbor is my number one here. She’s a record-breaking ship and one of her records has been set in 1984, my year! I'd have to pick the WJM, Walter J McCarthy because I had the good fortune of being able to board her a couple of winters ago. Just a massive ship. No one really realizes their monstrous size until you stand up close to a freighter and even better, get to go aboard one of these engineering marvels.

Burns harbor. Not only was this the first 1000 footer I saw, I also got to see it with my niece who was only 6 months old and nephew who was 1 1/2 years old. My nephew reaction was just awesome.

My favorite is American Integrity, she was my very first ship I ever saw in Sault Ste Marie in the locks 2021. She will always have a special place in my heart!❤️ ❤❤ I was hooked right then and there with these Lakers!

Hey Mike, this is Tyler. Out of all the ASC ships I've seen while in Duluth, I'd have to say the American Century is my favorite. She was the ASC ship I've seen more than any other ship, only second to the American Integrity. Last September, I was on the south pier when the Century arrived on that calm evening, and I saw you on the pier recording! Keep up the good work as always, Mike! (P.S. My favorite 1,000 footer is the Indiana Harbor because I made a lot of trips there years ago. I remember many years ago when ASC also owned, or at least managed, Gartland Steamship and Reiss Steamship. If you looked in the ASC archives, you would probably find many interesting pictures of old ships. I remember seeing the Otto Reiss being towed to the scrap yard, and the memory always stayed with me because it reminded me of a funeral procession.

Well, this is very cool news. First, thanks, Mike, for starting this channel. I've learned alot listening to you and others on here. Seems your a busy guy, but always take the time to get a video, no matter where you are. Also, thanks to David and Kevin for reaching out to Mike and wanting to include our little boat friends group. So exciting ❤ Ive never seen any of the freighters up close, yet. Ive seen them parked in winter layover at the Bay Shipbuilders but not up close. And Ive seen them off in the distance moving past Algoma Wi, where my daughter lives. But you could hardly make out that they're ships from that distance. Someday soon hopefully Ill be able to see many up close. I always thought it would be a great to be a cook or baker on the ships. Im going to say my favorite is American Century because I feel like Ive seen that one the most on the live cams. Thanks again, and I can't wait to see what this partnership has in store.❤

This exciting partnership will, over time, help to explain the 'behind the scenes' activities of these big ships of the Great Lakes, how they operate the way that they do, and the relationship between the producers and end users of the products being transported by these ships from the Port(s) of Duluth and Superior. These are surely interesting times ahead. I am a 'fan' of most any American Flagged Vessel, but I think the name American Spirit captures the image that we all wish our Republic to be.
