On lending tools - absolutely not. My father was an engineer and he taught me that lending tools can lead to a broken friendship. He said that tools are personal to what you need to carry out your work. If you damage or break a tool its your own fault. If someone else loses, doesn't return, or breaks a tool then all respect and trust is lost.

My mother said only lend something you are prepared to lose it. Learnt that lesson once and if I’m not prepared to lose it I do not lend it. Someone at work wanted to borrow my thermal camera and I declined as I didn’t have the money to replace it if they broke it.

When the Fire Service report an electrical fault as cause of fire there is often no distinction between the fixed wiring catching fire or a portable appliance, there has been a big rise in poor quality e-scooter battery packs catching fire when charging, we had one today in Tipton, lethal. Even Artisan posted a video about a consumer unit fire which was inaccurate as the board was in an area which caught fire damaging the board, the board was not the cause……😮

Aren't most rental home fires caused by the tenants buying the cheapest multi plugs that are made in China and dont meet the BS standard then overloading them. I mention this as Big Clive posted a breakdown of one of these and even though it had a BS standard stamp on it it was not safe as it was made with under size cables and connectors.

(Dodgy imported products aside) isn't that another way of saying that most landlords are providing a bare minimum of sockets, unsuitable for modern living?
@chrisardern4594
@chrisardern4594 2 ай бұрын
@@DevAnubis yes but when you consider that most houses up for rent are the older type and are not covered under the NICEIC rules for electrical outlets per room. As long as the property has a EICR to establish that the electrical installation is satisfactory the landlord has fulfilled his obligations. It's up to the tenant to purchase from a reputable source a multi socket after all it's their life we could be taking about. Also when a tenant leaves a property it's up to the landlord to have a EICR completed even if the tenants were short term this it to make sure the tenants haven't altered the installation and it's safe for the next tenants but I dont know any LL that do this.
@deang5622
@deang5622 Ай бұрын
@@DevAnubisNo. Completely unrelated. The number of power sockets in the home is absolutely nothing to do with where the tenant buys their USB chargers from or other products from, or vice versa. Think about it. Insufficient power sockets mounted on the wall in a room can be easily extended using fused extension cables.

When you install a 30 mA residual current breaker in a decades-old house wiring system, it could well be that some devices will cause the RCD to trip. In the specific, it could be an old boiler; all kinds of external lighting wiring, or some old white goods like old washing machines. The discovery of such failing appliances or leaky house wiring is a positive event because such current leaks to ground can develop further and start a fire later. The problem is, the landlord begins an upgrade process to meet the new regulation, presumably costing a couple hundred pounds, and ends up with rewiring all external lighting, with a faulty (20 years old) boiler, and washing machine where the motor and start capacitor are so leaky to warrant a replacement. Not to mention the current leaks in wall sockets where the walls are mouldy or humid. Not to mention an old or defective earth ground main connection point. I mean, there is a risk - in the case of old houses - the began a £200 job and ending with a £2,000 bill. Money aside, such findings are always good, because it is one likely fire risk removed. Regards, Anthony

If the meter were to be replaced then it will always be a smart meter, that has a PrePayment consumer access device if the signal does not get through?
@deang5622
@deang5622 Ай бұрын
No, they don't work like that. Your electricity account is either set to prepayment or it is not. The taking of readings and communication of those back to the electricity supplier is quite a separate thing. If there is no signal, then it's down to you to take manual readings and get them to the supplier, either by telephone or internet.
@grahameida7163
@grahameida7163 Ай бұрын
@@deang5622 so the regulations say “no backward steps” so a energy provider must install a smart meter where prepayment is needed. The comms provider must provide communications to the meter somehow (either by direct or mesh comms hubs). Also all pre payment installations must have a pre payment access device (PPMID) where if the signal to the DCC is lost for some reason the payment code can be manually typed in remote from the meter.

New installations and where changes are being made to existing installations, RCDs must be fitted. This rule has existed for quite a few years. But there are many houses which have electrical installations which predate the RCD regulation, and there is no obligation on those home owners/landlords to have RCDs fitted. Each time new regulations come out, there is no obligation on people to bring their electrical installations up to compliance to those latest regs. Consequently there are many properties, both rented (council and privately rented) and home owner owned properties which do not have RCDs fitted.

Rental properties.. Ok, so what about council flats etc.? I live in a council flat in Scotland, doesn't that rule apply..? In my case it doesn't matter, as we have RCBOs across the board, but there must be plenty of council properties that don't. Why is this rule specific to private rentals..?
@deang5622
@deang5622 Ай бұрын
Because it prevents the council having to spend money. Not having it apply to council properties isn't about safety. Ironically it is probably the council tenants that need RCDs more than anyone else. The extra money the councils will need to find to fund it, will mean council tax needs to rise. And that then becomes a political matter. Scottish government is thinking about its election prospects.

Whenever the source of a fire is not known it goes down as an Electrical fire. Even the ones that have an Electrical ignition, will often be down to a faulty appliance or a cheapo charger not tested for our systems. I believe the Manufacturers should be held to account for their equipment. They should be forced to add proper overload protection as standard. The hardworking people in the Electrical Industry get dragged and blamed for stuff we do get wrong, justifiably. However, when idiots buy Temu phone chargers, and plug them into their B&M extension cable overnight, or assume they can just hook another 500W Halogen light above their ridiculous hot-tub, we shouldn't be held accountable. We can help people stay alive only when the are prepared to ask for it.

Its a bit cheeky to suggest that its taken 20 years to get to 1m EVs... Mass-produced general-sale EVs really only started with the Mitsubish iMiev and Nissan LEAF both launching in 2009. And SAE J1772 was only published in 2009 as well so who was installing EV charging points (as we know them today) in 2004 ? 15 years would be much fairer. But yes, current aales trajectory is for 2m EVs by 2025.

Unbeliveable that someone should install a prepaymen tmeter 8 foot abouve the ground, I mean, you should not need legislation to stop that, its just plain bad workmanship. My sympathies to the family, its tragic. RCD, since I left the army in 1980, I have put an rcd in every property I have lived in. I am not an electrician, nor would I profess to be , electrians are a different skillset, I am an electronic engineer, at best a competant person, The hydo have been very helpfull in letting me put rcds in. I mean, why haven't the regulations mandated this years ago, so many deaths could have been prevented, of all the stuff they have introduced, this should have been one of the first things. Of all of the vlogs you have posted, this has upset me the most by a long way, and the IET(of which I am a memeber) who set the regs, should take some responsiblity. The question is will an RCD reduce the instances of house fires? Seems unlikely to me and you would need AFD's for that? All that said I thought it was common knowledge that death by "electricity" was mostly caused indirectly via fires and not directly by electrocution and that electrical fires were the source of most house fires (in homes of non-smokers). All that said everyone rented or not has to have a mixture of interlinked smoke/heat/CO alarms in Scotland so it seems unlikely RCD's will save many lives from electrical fires. Not that enforcing RCD's is not a good thing, just the justification seems a bit off.

I'm not convinced that a RCD will make a great difference to fire risk. It will greatly improve personal safety (electrocution risk), but do nothing to address live to neutral fault currents. At best, after the fault has melted the insulation away an earth leak is likely, tripping a RCD so it would be able to reduce the duration of the fault.

I'm not an electrical engineer and not from the UK, but I am surprised that the practice of connecting 16A socket outlets to a circuit with a 20A circuit breaker is not flagged as one of the prime causes of electrical fires! Firstly, the outlet can not maintain a current of 20A without heating up, and secondly, the device plugged in may be glowing at 18A while the circuit breaker will still be smiling! An earth leakage unit will not prevent such a situation. Surely, the regulations must be amended if commonsense can not prevail.

@@andreasu.3546 I guess you have the same kind of basic rule that it’s the owner of the electrical installation that’s responsible for its safety, that’s basically how it’s done in Sweden. It’s up to the owner or renter to get the necessary work done to keep the electrical installation safe. One big thing in Sweden is that updates on the regulations doesn’t demand remedial action on existing installations. We can even add small things to the older installations in accordance with the regulations that was in effect when it was originally installed.

@@kristiangoransson6104 Which is a dirty almost an ad hoc gimmick. A socket should not be protected by the thing that is plugged in.

I do not know chi country yo are talking about. In Finland sockets are not allowed in 20 A circuits but you could really overload it with a power strip.

Don't lend your tools out. A few years ago I lent a submersible pump to help somebody during flooding, they also hired some pumps. When the flooding subsided my pump disappeared with the hired pumps, when I eventually got it back the mains cable had been fractured - somebody tried to hide this by ty-wrapping the cable in a position where the pump worked but I ended up having to buy a new pump.

After renting a succession of properties with RCD-less BS3036 consumer units, I welcome the rule change in Scotland and hope that it comes to the rest of the UK.

The electrical regulations are stupid... not there to save lives just there to make money... they need to get rid of 1.5mm cable all together and stop installing outdated consumer units that still meet the regs... you cant take your plug of a lighting circuit.... well you could if someone didnt decide to save 50p on cable 😂

Are you suggesting using 2.5mm for lighting circuits?
@Invent-eq1wl
@Invent-eq1wl 2 ай бұрын
@@thegrinch3691 yes and 4mm for sockets... its not the 90s its 2024 people have more electrical items these days than ever before, you only need your fridge to come on same time as the kettle and your using 26amps, not to mention your hoover, toaster 85inch tv and electric heaters.... all electrical systems and regs are out of date by about 30 years a good 30 too you know back when a family had 1 tv per house and that was only 19inch and you were lucky to own a microwave 🤣 a drill battery charger will use 6amps these days they didnt even have battery drills back then and now people are charging their cars from ordinary sockets.... so yeah bare min it should be 4mm sockets(especially if its not a ring) and 2.5mm for lighting circuits.... led transformers use a lot of amps if youve got a big room and a lot of lights a 6amp breaker aint doing it

@@Invent-eq1wl i understand your logic but just because a plug top on these appliances has a 13a fuse in it doesn't mean its pulling 13a, same with majority of appliances. I have done plenty of domestic work and still do but never once have I seen any issues with the LV transformers on a 6a breaker (sometimes 10a if there are a lot) and wired in 1mm let alone 1.5mm. Also, although you mention the big TV's etc they are usually on separate circuits. Commercial kitchens even plug in big freezers and fridges and they are always 32a 2.5mm. Just because it may be rated at a certain ampage it doesn't mean they are using that amount. You also have to apply diversity. The regs are defo out dated but if what you mention was actually a real world problem then everyone would be having issues in their homes already, and speaking from current experience they are not.

@@thegrinch3691 all ill say is some people use a lot of electric and not everyone lives in social housing... also not everyone wants 3 consumer units on the wall or a utility room for just your electrical panels 🙄 youll end up using more meterage of cable anyway

@@Invent-eq1wl your using a very niche example when the regs has to deal with generalities. Do you think there are more people in social housing or more people in the type of property you were describing?
