Great job Enyonam! The interview was awesome and the answers were straight and to the point. I am happy for the young man, the farm owners and workers. They are contributing excellently well to the African economy and that needs to be praised. I wish though that he had provided the feed formulation to you because sharing useful farming information online is one problem we have as Africans. Providing his formulation will not stop his birds from producing. However, it's no big deal though because a little later feed formulation search on Google will provide anyone with detailed feed formula that can even be specific to your region.

I completely agree. He did great. It was unfortunate that he assumed that sharing his feed formulation method would make his business less profitable. Or perhaps make other farmers gain some secret information.

7:44 Commercial poultry farms will typically keep their layers for 2yrs. 6 months rearing and 1 and half year production. Because after 2yrs, the flock will no longer be profitable to keep. The standard Hen Day production will be around 62-70% depending on the breed and the farm management. Beyond week 100 (2yrs), it’s not sustainable to keep the flock. It’s evidential in the fact that they collect 380 crates from 15,000 layers that are 1 and half year old. That’s 76% production. By the time they reach 2yrs, the production might drop below 70%. At this point, the profit margin will be nothing to write home about, so farmers will sell the birds and bring in new flock (DOC).

14:15 The birds are vaccinated throughout the production period against the Newcastle Disease. They are either given Newcastle injection or oral Newcastle vaccine like Lasota or i2 every 3 months as per the Ghana National Poultry Vaccination Schedule. Most people however give the oral Newcastle every 8 weeks. Failure to vaccinate them against Newcastle disease during the production period will cost the farmer hugely.

17:52 The optimal environment temperature for layers is between 18 and 24 degrees celcius. There’s a risk of heat stress when the temperature is too high. This of course will impact their production.
@MichaelO2
@MichaelO2 Жыл бұрын
You are right! This is why production drops at the beginning of each dry season, and only picks up when the birds have acclimatized to the new hot weather and when the farmer puts things in place to help the birds adjust faster. I have 500+ layers being managed by my sister and her husband and the daily feeding rate dropped from 2.25/2.50 bags per day in some parts of the rainy season (July to October) to about 1.5 bags per day between November and late December. It has slowly started climbing back and they are recording between 1.75 to 2.00 bags as we speak. They had to give them some boosters and perform activities, especially with the tarpaulins to help them cool down during the day and warm up a bit at night.

Is deep litter the same as free range? Do battery hens get stressed as a result of confinement? can this lead to disease outbreak?
@theghanaianfarmer
@theghanaianfarmer Жыл бұрын
Yes, deep litter is same as free range, definitely the birds might get stressed. That’s why you compare and choose one
@WalIbru
@WalIbru Жыл бұрын
Deep litter is different from free range, but I understand the confusion. Though the birds have more space to move about in the deep litter system compared with the cage system. In the free range system, the birds have access to outside (typically, the farm’s compound which will normally be fenced), and they will only use the coop/pen house to roost/sleep at night and lay eggs (some farms will have some of the laying nests in the compound so the birds can also use it when they want to lay). Basically, free range birds can look up and see the sky, if this helps in understanding what a free range system is.
