Have put a 30" blade on the shopping list to make your model. I have been using bolts but I like the twig pieces to hold the blade, far easier to find than a dropped bolt in the grasses, thanks Lonnie. I have to say, if I keep watching your older videos, I will be more than ready for getting outdoors this spring! All the best.

I know this is a very old video, but I wanted to comment. I am researching the plethora of different ways to make the bushcraft bucksaw from the landscape for an upcoming video of mine on the same subject. This way seems like the best way yet. The up rights are held more securely than other designs, and there isn't tons of skill heavy carving as I have seen with some that use mortise and tenon design. I have been a long time subscriber to your channel and love your way of explaining things. You do a great job! Thank you!

Something I️ haven’t seen anyone recommend is to leave a long tag end after the initial tensioning knot so the you can run down the tension bar and tie it to the spreader so as to avoid getting a windlass in the face in case the bar gets knocked sidewise from the spreader..

Just out of curiosity, starting with cutting down the initial branch, how long would you say does it take you to make a bucksaw frame in the wild? 15 minutes, 30...?
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival

probably around 30 minutes. Of course the more often one does a particular project the faster it is to complete.

I wonder if it's possible to make a bow saw using just an L or tick shaped branch (and sub-branch) and keep the tension in the wood
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 7 жыл бұрын
Yes a bow saw can be made from natural material and some people do it. Depending on your choice of wood or availability of wood types, you may have to heat your branch in a fire to "loosen" the fibers to facilitate bending without breaking. Bend the branch into a U shape that will end up with the ends of the branch being a spread that is slightly further apart then the length of your blade. When you bend the branch ends in far enough to fasten the ends of the saw blade to each branch end there should be tension applied by the branch to keep the saw blade stretched tight.

I'm trying to decide which Mora Knife to buy, please tell me if the belt clip on the sheath is a good design, could it come off if you fell cand slid down a bank ? I like a belt loop .
@shadowstalker130666
@shadowstalker130666 8 жыл бұрын
+gary nicholson I have a few mora's, including the classic red handled one. It's a great knife, but the belt loop on it is crap. The fix of it is a piece of paracord or any cord really, and either wear it around your neck, or make a smaller loop and use that loop to hang it off your belt. It fits relatively snug in the sheath, but might jar loose if you fell down a bank. The cheapest fix for that issue is a rubber band around the buillt in plastic belt loop and the handle of the knife. Works just fine to hold it in. The other mora I have is the 'bushcraft black'. Fantastic knife. good grip, and a sharp 90 degree spine for ferro rods, and shaving off bark and such. The belt clip does come loose, and the knife is somewhat loose in the sheath. The fix I use is a piece of paracord, about 10" long. Remove the belt clip, which is removable and leaves a hole. Loop the paracord through there and tie it off, then use the leftover to wrap the handle and tie it into the sheath. Never fallen out of its sheath again on me. I'm sure there are other, more expensive fixes, such as aftermarket sheaths, but these are the cheapest 'broke bushcrafter' fixes I know and use. Hope it helps!
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 8 жыл бұрын
+gary nicholson I thought that I had answered this comment but yet I do not see my reply. Sorry. I made a custom home made sheath out of Kydex for my Mora but before that, I drilled a couple holes in the bottom of the clip and in the sheath itself and "sewed" it together with paracord to turn the clip into a loop. No problems after that up until the time I retired that sheath and began using my custom made sheath.

@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 5 жыл бұрын
No, There is no need since I am in remote locations only up to a week or two at most. It is extremely rare that i ever sharpen a saw blade and in fact i have never sharpened any of my handsaws. These bow saw blades like I used here are inexpensive enough that I have replaced a couple of them after many years of camping use. If they are used carefully, they remain sharp for many years of camping type use.

@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival Жыл бұрын
@@cajunoneforchrist4545 One of the close calls that I mentioned occured when I was a preteen. It was a very black dark night and our family had just arrived home in our car. Normally we would all get out and stand around the door while my dad unlocked and opened the door as well as turn on the porch light. This night however, we all uncharacteristically stayed in the car except my dad. He unlocked the door and turned on the porchlight. There curled on the cement walkway right where we all would normally be standing was a big timber rattler. My dad informed us all to stay in the car until he dispatched the snake. He grabbed a dirt shovel and did the deed. That was one of many times in our lives that involved direct devine intervention by God Himself. I have a feeling that if we knew how many times that God intervened in our lives for our benefit we would be very surprised. We as humans are so clueless so much of the time. That aspect alone tells how awesome our God is. He is the mighty creator of the universe and all that exists but yet He is involved personally in each of our lives because He has so much love for us. If it was up to me, i would have zapped mankind off of the face of the earth long long ago. He however is even more aware of our shortcomings but willingly chooses to love us inspite of who and what we are. THAT is an awesome God.

If your caring the blade why not carry a few grams called a nut n bolt on the extra hole on the blade?
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 9 жыл бұрын
A Mosher in Some situations that might be a good idea. However the blade is so extremely compact and by adding a nut and bolt to it you lose a lot of compactness. Some people put their saw blade inside a hollow belt for their pants or others may wrap it around something round like a cook pot. By adding a nut and bolt, the negligible blade thickness now becomes a problem for certain methods of transporting and storage
