In this glass fusing tutorial, I'll be using the strip construction technique to create a unique fused glass platter. The tutorial will demonstrate the glass cutting, coldworking, assembly, and several firings including a full fuse, a fire polish, and a slump into a mould.

Didn’t think I’d like the colours when you started but now it’s all done I love it so the old saying don’t judge till the end really does work. And thank you a lot of work but the finish is worth it.

Hi Susan. Honestly, I had doubts. But I try to not always go for the bright rich colours. I personally like bright blues, red, yellows etc. but these Earthy tones can some times be fantastic.

glad to read your answer. I work with the oceanside available here, try to find a suitable gold color highlighting some of my work .Do you have an advice?

Sorry, but I don't work with Oceanside glass or 96. For highlights have you thought about mica? I think there are a few other products along the same line.

Absolutely loving the project! What is the width of the strips?
@RocketRoseArt
@RocketRoseArt Жыл бұрын
Hi Kim. They're 6mm wide to match the final thickness of the piece. Keep in mind they're laid on edge.

I actually just started making strip plates, but I shake terribly, so I’m having issues, but everything I’m seeing you do excellent work.

Mine is slowly getting worse. From a drug I take for seizures. But I cope. Mainly try to steady against something if possible. I've found that certain positions are worse so avoid those if I can. Anyway, I love strip construction and would love to do much more. Maybe another soon.

Aloha, I live in Hawaii and enjoy your tutorials! You mentioned at the end of your platter video to suggest any changes to this project. For the strip platter, I would perhaps try the brown streaky as a strip instead of the orange. I would use the orange as the "feature." Everything else I would keep as is. I thought your platter was wonderful I think the alternate color scheme would also look lovely. Additionally, I would like to know what brand of strip cutter you use? I have a Morton system, however, it doesn't have an easy to use ruler device in my model and I may switch to another brand. Thank you (Mahalo) for your videos! Sheli

Hi Shelly. Brown streaky cut across the streaks would have been very interesting. I probably would have swapped the olive green and canary yellow with that.

Hi Shelly. Forgot to answer you about the cutting system. This is the Beetle Bits Cutting System. I was using their Flying Beetle accessory to cut the strips, for the first time. I think it will take a little practice. I'll do a video about the system in the future.

Why did you sandblast it? Thank you
@RocketRoseArt
@RocketRoseArt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacqueline. From memory, the piece had a few small areas of devitrification. That would have been the main reason. Plus it gives a clean surface for the fire polish. It's not absolutely necessary if it all looks good.

Thanks for posting this! I have a question. Why do. you need the sandblasting step? And could you attempt to combine the slump and firepolish in one firing? Thanks for doing what you do!
@RocketRoseArt
@RocketRoseArt 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sharon. You could definitely do the fire polish and slump together. I have done exactly that many times. The result will be a satin-like finish. I did that in this video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qciWqbCAvN-nd4U.html - of making stands. You could skip the sandblasting if you wish. Just keep in mind that the top of the piece is down during the full fuse so it's picked up texture from the kiln paper. You probably noticed there was still some texture in the top even after fire polishing. If I had polished at a slightly higher temp for longer it would have smoothed out nicely, but then the edges would have started rounding.

Liked it very much! Again, two questions: What's the exact purpose of the sandblasting? And what's the temperature and time of the Polisch firing at the end? Thanks for your answers
@RocketRoseArt
@RocketRoseArt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Carel. The sandblasting in this case was to remove small amounts of devitrification and clean up the bottom (to be the top) that was against the shelf. You'll find the full firing schedule in the video. There is a timeline in the description. Hope this helps.

So I was listening to this instead of watching it, as m at work. I happen to stop the truck and pull my phone out of the cubby right as you showed the finished piece before going to the kill, but with the page curl to the next video segment. For a moment, I legitimately thought you had lifted the thin fire and ruined the entire design.
