** NOTE: Jenny used a 28mm rotary cutter during this tutorial, not an 18mm one. **
Jenny Doan demonstrates how to make a lovely classic quilt using 10 inch squares of precut fabric (layer cake). For this quick and easy project, Jenny chose "Gratitude & Grace" 10" squares by Kim Diehl for Henry Glass Fabrics.
This quilt is made with the Missouri Star Half Heart Template, which is such a wonderful, versatile ruler to have in your sewing room. Jenny uses the Omnigrid 28mm Stick Rotary Cutter because it goes around the curves of the heart template easily.

As Jenny was pinning the hearts to the edges of the square I thought that an easy way to keep that 1/2" from the corner measurement would have been to put the square on the cutting mat where two lines intersect and then as she put the hearts down she could just eyeball that 1/2" from the corner in each direction...just a thought. Really like this quilt! I have lots of leftover fabric that I've cut into precut sizes so think I may do mine scrappy. Thanks, Jenny!

I just cried when I saw this. Thank you so much, Jenny!! My husband and I met, dated for 2.5 wks, he returned to Germany where he was stationed in the US AirForce (this was before social media and computers!!) and we wrote letters every day and sent a 60-minute cassette tape to each other each week (we would play fav songs and talk about our future. He would do one 30 minute side, I would do the other side, etc. After about 10 wks he brought up possibly getting married within 9-10 months. (We had agreed to wait until he was out of the service which would have been 19 months at the time we met). After I agreed that getting married sooner was great, he sent a tape home to my parents asking for my hand in marriage. When they agreed, we set a date, and I never thought about an engagement ring, etc. He sent home an engagement ring, a proposal tape, and had flowers delivered too. This was all done on Valentine's Day!!! So, while I watched this video, those memories came flooding back, and the water-works started because my hubs died when he was just 48 yrs old. It's been almost 18 yrs, but I miss him so much!! THANK you for all you do Jenny, you make quilting so much fun!!!!

Love this pattern. It is so different than what I usually make and I am envisioning all kinds of seasons to use the pattern. - and of course since I have never seen a ruler/template I haven't liked, another one to add to my collection. Hey, some people collect plates, some people collect baseball cards, I collect rulers. I feel so much better now, and justified.

"Open Up Your Heart". Oh Jenny, you've taken me back to the 70's... er um that's, Nineteen 70's, kids! Australia had adopted (stole) a New Zealand singer/songwriter by the name G Wayne Thomas. He had a hit with "Open Up Your Heart". 😻 Your words and quilt reminded me of that cool song. Thanks, as always. Oh and I love the quilt pattern, technique and applique.💟 "There's no dreamer who's ever dreamed, and seen it all come true ... But it's a start, when you open up your heart." 😍

This is indeed going on my list to try...adorable and fun!! SUGGESTION...If you are having trouble with fabrics shifting when sandwiched my trick is to do this... **Stack all layers as desired and run a hot iron over them. This kind of "glues" them together and keeps them from peeking out (as you say). I do this all the time and it not only keeps layers from migrating but it also makes certain your fabrics are nice and pressed flat.

This quilt pattern is new to me and very pretty! I really love the old, traditional patterns. I might try to do this one in a table runner. Since it's almost 1am, I should not even be awake now. But our furnace stopped working and the repair man is here right now. It's 34 degrees outside, so it's not too cold. But tomorrow night it's going down to 15 degrees and I would prefer to be warm.

While watching, I was thinking “how could I make this so the hearts are not raw-edged”? (Cut 1/4” larger and sewn with featherweight interfacing so the raw edges are turned under). And then Jenny showed her two-colour table runner and I thought, “that’s it! Practice on a smaller project first with a couple of half yards of two fabrics!” Thanks Jenny & your MSQC family for another wonderful inspiration!! ~Diana K. p.s. I’ve never seen this traditional pattern, but I love ❤️ it!

I prefer the 2 color quilt! Fyi....if you watch Nancy Zieman she uses the fusible interfacing so you are right! I believe she places fusible rectangle shape across the top of the "Ice cream cone" , sewed it on, then turned it and fused it down....then topstitched, down the entire piece to the corner of a half sq triangle. Hope that makes sense! She also made. hers 16 in. blocks but interchanged them with 8in. blocks. You need to watch hers too!
