That is absolutely spectacular sir, too beautiful for words! It was wonderful to see it come to life. I'm 63, lady in Mpumalanga, South Africa and recently discovered making cement/concrete plant containers with fabric etc but still have a lot to learn, enjoying if very much. I love your lion, a real beauty thank you for sharing it 🦁🦁🦁.

@@x-webman Do you buy the mold somewhere or make it off a plastic piece?
@LexFridmanShort
@LexFridmanShort 2 жыл бұрын
@@jacobmarley2417 Most of these are made from a piece that's already been made, I go to yard sales and second hand stores to find things to mold once you have found what you want to mold then liquid latex is applied in layers to make a thick mold, depending on the size of the piece you are replicating depends on the amount of latex you would have to use for rigidity and to prevent expanding from the weight of the cement, as to why he also surrounds the mold in sand to prevent expansion in the mold, for a piece of this size you would end up doing in the range of 40 or more layers which is time consuming as to you have to dry each layer before applying the next using a hair dryer or something of the sort. There are other options to making molds however latex is one of the more cost efficient ways of doing so.

awesome video! quick question. iv"e been making small statues for a couple of months and at first, I was making my own mix with sand aggregate and portland cement, the mold I was using was of an owl and after it was done curing I would take it out of the mold but the ears would always break, after continuous failing, I decided to just use portland cement with no additives and they came out great but over time they started cracking and then I came across this video and see that you use a premix bag of concrete so I bought the same concrete you use in this video and gave the owls another shot hoping the ears would not crumble and I would have a long-lasting noncracking statue, and well they broke once again and now I am completely lost and have no clue what I'm doing wrong I've tried everything more than once and still seem to not figure it out. do you have any clues that may help🤷‍♂️if so thank you so much!

Maybe try leaving to set longer before removing it from the mold. You could also try putting a small piece of wire in the ears for reinforcement.

@@x-webman thax... i will check it out... i wonder how much cost is to make a mold like this? looks like your mold was made by painting multiple lyers of latex over a lion statue... i just need to find best source and correct latex to buy... thax

I think you could make a mold like this for around $40. First, you will need an actual statue to make a mold from.

@@x-webman yes it seems to be pretty simple just takes over a week to make a latex mold....thax... maybe making a mold from silicone is better and faster.

Can the mold be reused indefinitely? Or do they wear out, rip, tear, crack, leading to a finite life?
@x-webman
@x-webman 4 жыл бұрын
It is estimated that you could make 100 - 150 statues from a latex mold, with proper care.

Love your video tutorial. I have a question, would mortar concrete work instead of the concrete mixed with all that gravel?

@@x-webman I'm looking forward to a a smoother surface. I tried with the mix you used and ended up with a bunch of rocks on the outside of the finished mold. Thank you for you tutorial videos they are great.

Vibrating the air bubbles out will keep gravel from the outside. The finished statue will be as smooth as the mold you are using.

Love how the video says “Start to finish” and the 1st step is to have a premade mold. This is what “Start to finish” in concrete for me is: Make a block of concrete and actually carve the thing.

good luck carving concrete, lol. most people would just use specialized concrete as a sculpting medium and build it up. then, they'd make a mould of it and sell the mould for hundreds of dollars.

You should put charcoal tint into your concrete mix that would give you a starter for your basecoat as well as get a Roto hammer and use it as a concrete vibrator. You can dip it down into the structure itself and pull a lot of those bubbles out on a smaller scale, but just like the big boys do. It did turn out nice although I am trying to figure what my first 3-D structure will be. Mostly concrete steppingstones you know the turtles paw prints blah blah blah but again nice work

Was this just a latex mold... any special type of latex ...how many times can mold be used? over 100? or do they wear out? thanks
@x-webman
@x-webman 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is just an ordinary latex mold. It could probably be used a hundred times if taken care of. I dry brush after each use & sometimes rinse with water and let it air dry. It will wear out over time & use.

i like a little chatter if it's relevant, it's terrible music that drives me nuts. there's so much that can be mentioned that would be very useful information. but, some guys aren't into that, and that's understandable.
