Really glad you are sharing this Paul, almost a dying art sharpening a saw. I recently taught a young student the benefit of sharpening and setting a saw, and from an economical point of view no throw away saws ending up in landfill, or converting to cabinet scrapers. If only more would buy from eBay or second hand shops, there is still plenty out there waiting to be revived and put back into use.

Hi Paul and team, thanks so much for everything you’ve done for us during the year. When you say that you use a saw file, is that a specific type of file, or can an ordinary triangular file of small enough size work? I have an old Diston cross cut saw which needs to be cleaned and sharpened next year. I hope you have a blessed and peaceful Christmas.
@MH-sw8cg
@MH-sw8cg 2 жыл бұрын
The saw file is a special file. The edges of the file are round and not sharp as they are at the normal triangular file. The sharp edges could damage your sawblade. The saw files have six faces, not only three.
@Paul.Sellers
@Paul.Sellers 2 жыл бұрын
Buy a 4" extra slim Bahco file or then too a three-square needle fille.
@nurgle11
@nurgle11 2 жыл бұрын
The base of each corner of a triangular saw file dosent come to a point so when it files the steel the gullet of the teeth are rounded, if it comes to a harp v (the gullet that is, not the tip) the plate can fracture and the tooth can break off or fracture into the plate which can mean mill filing all the way down to the fracture and creating new teeth which is a pain, bacho make a decent saw file which you can buy in sets from places like Lee Valley, might depend on where you are on what you can get. For tiny teeth (like 20 tpi) you might be able to get away with a normal needle 3 sided file as there wont be much force per tooth and the file will naturally have a small radius at the corners (a problem will bigger tpi is that radius becomes relatively too small). If you do buy a saw file, make sure the sides of the file are at least twice the depth of your teeth, this allows for an even wear of the files sides as you rotate between all 3 corners.

@Paul.Sellers
@Paul.Sellers 2 жыл бұрын
It's all too easy to think you must joint the teeth when in fact you don't. After you have sharpened, run your fingertips lightly along the teeth to feel for a high tooth. When your fingers hit them you will feel the high spot. Take the file and fil either side of the high tooth and even out the tooth from both or one side depending on what you see. You can guestimate the height, try it in the cut and see if it still snags in the wood.

Thats awesome, how much better again will it be when you turn the saw around and sharpen the other half of the teeth? Thanks Paul, for showing yet again, that tools are not optimised from the factory. We can make them better, with just a little work, once we get them home. Planes, chisels, vices, clamps, and yes, even saws. Are there any tools that can not be improved from the factory?
@Paul.Sellers
@Paul.Sellers 2 жыл бұрын
I think youi have it wrong Thomas. This is a ripcut that can be filed all from one side. Crosscuts must be sharpened from both sides. As dovetail saws and tenon saws are generally and predominantly used in ripcut mode they are best sharpened for ripcut. Using the small toothed saw for both rip and crosscut with the same teeth. That's ten teeth per inch or less.

Dear Paul, thank you for the video! What I am still not sure - is the file meant to be filing the whole gullet? I. e. will the size, shape of the file shape the entire saw teeth or say only the upper third or so? And what would the implications be when filing a saw for the first time - you would need more strokes per gullet until the shape of the teeth fits to the file, and on subsequent filing needs much fewer strokes? Hope I could make my point - difficult to describe for a non-native. Best Christian
@ricos1497
@ricos1497 2 жыл бұрын
If it's a new saw like Paul's, it should be obvious when you start sharpening, so the best advice is just to give it a try. You just match the angle of the file to the existing angle and just push it through from gullet to tip (your file will be taller than the tooth). You'll notice that the sharpened teeth are shinier so you shouldn't lose track.
@dr.christianrapp
@dr.christianrapp 2 жыл бұрын
@@ricos1497 Thank you! But I am not so sure still. If you filed all the way down the size of the file would be crucial. I think I remember Paul said it should be considerable above the teeth (did he say twice as much?) But then question would be how much is left from the teeth if you file down till the gullet. Let us see, maybe he addresses it.
@Paul.Sellers
@Paul.Sellers 2 жыл бұрын
I did answer you straight off Christian, I am not sure why it disappeared. Yes, you place the file in the gullet and let it register to the existing Vee of the cut and touching both faces, the front of one tooth and the back of the other, adjacent one. Do each gullet with the same length of stroke, same pressure but not too heavy. As you file you will see the brightness of the tooth brighten. If it is a well-worn saw you may have to repeat the whole operation a second pass after doing the full length of the saw. What you are relying on is the bottom gullet of the teeth as a registration point for your saw. This should maintain the distances of the teeth unless of course, the teeth were badly sharpened..
@dr.christianrapp
@dr.christianrapp 2 жыл бұрын
@@Paul.Sellers Sorry Paul. Still did not totally get it. "What you are relying on is the bottom gullet of the teeth as a registration point for your saw. " registration point for saw or for file? Maybe I rephrase my question: Is the aim to file until the file touches the whole sides of the two facets (so until the bottom of the gullet) or only the upper part? Possibly the point is that I do not understand if the entire facet cuts or only a certain amount of it from the tip downwards. Understanding that would be helpful as it seems to relate to sizing of the file: (1) If it is very big it should only file at the top of the facets. (2) if it is very small then it should sink down in the gullet and not touch both facets close to the tip... Hope I could make my point clear.

On ripcuts you file through-cuts in every gullet, crosscut you file ever alternate tooth and then turn around and file the inbetweeners. That creates the pinnacle three-sided tooth. On smaller saws with teeth smaller than ten per inch it is best to sharpen them as ripcut because these teeth will both rip- and cross-cut.

@Paul.Sellers
@Paul.Sellers 2 жыл бұрын
Possibly. It depends on the size of the teeth and then the hardness. Some hobby saws have super-small teeth so upwards of 30 TPI and are very small. Then the plates on hobby saws are sometimes super hard too because they can be used for cutting metals and cannot be filed. Best to just try. You will need a three-square needle file by Bahco
