Make a mallet from an inexpensive 3/4 inch pipe tee fitting. I attach the wooden pieces without first cutting a thread but allow the pipe fitting to cut the threads as the wood is screwed in.

Dear men, It just occurred to me like that, and then I told myself to search Google and see if more people had thought about it, and so I found your lovely video. You do a really nice and accurate job! Well done! I wish you always success!

great job ,,, i used the same fitting to make a bench vice drive handle ,,,, just sanded off the through treads so it does not wreck the handle ,

Put lead birdshot or BBs in so it's a deadblow hammer... You probably already know, but the reason he struggled to screw in the ends is because the threads in the pipe are tapered.. It's also a good idea to file 4 slots in the threads to make it like a tapping die. It will make it easier when changing the heads later. 👍

pipe threads are tapered so they get tighter as you go

You could also fill the T with lead shot to make a dead blow mallet.

It got harder to screw the plugs in because pipe threads have a slight taper.

Remember pipe threads are taped, so cut a slight taper on the end of your work.

Another thought. Could you put some sand or small lead fishing weights in the head and turn it into a dead-blow mallet, too?

Bees wax also helps to lubricate the wood and does no harm to either the wood or metal. Nice job.

What's the best kind of wood to use?

Any hardwood will do. Ash is good or hickory if you're in the south but really any wood will work.
