On a recent video I used a sanding paste that I made. I had a few viewers ask questions about it and ask if I could post a video on how I did it. So that is what I did. Other videos have been made on doing this.
Because it is a simple process I tried to make the video show how simple it is.
And the paste really does work good.
4 oz mineral oil
1 oz beeswax
1 oz diatomaceous earth
BE SURE TO ONLY USE FOOD SAFE INGREDIENTS IF YOU PLAN ON USING IT FOR FOOD USE. MY TURNINGS ARE NOT FOR FOOD USE
Looking for a good paste already made then I recommend trying the ACKS product.
I think it is the best product of this type I have tried.
I RECOMMEND ACKS PASTE AND IT IS FOOD SAFE

You are all set then. You can buy the mineral at almost any store. Walmart Bimart and stores like that will have it. I think it used to be used as a laxative. So be sure and get mineral oil not mineral spirits. Less than $2.00 for a 16 oz bottle. I have never bought the abrasive wax because I thought it was a bit costly. Others that have tried what I made say it works the same and its fun to make. Thanks for watching and commenting. Gary

Thank you Gord I am happy you like it. And it is ridiculous how easy it is to make. And it works great. Not sure what commercial products use but I know this does the job for 30 cents and ounce. I am sure you know who Ricky Nelson is from an old TV series and a famous pop singer in the USA. He had a song called Garden Party. There was a line I remember. You can't please everyone so you might as well please yourself. So hopefully others try making this very cost effective abrasive paste. I think most woodturners are into doing things themselves. I made and just tried you paste, it works. Plus i found another use , I made the paste in a plastic bowl, one like I use to pour up epoxy and stuff to make some of my bowls. No matter what I tried, mold release, oil, pam, etc, I always have to bust the bowl off. your paste left a oily film that I couldn't get off, it is slick. I bet it will be great as a mold release, can't wait to try it. Thanks for the recipe. Larry

Thank you Larry I am glad you like it and it works for you. I bet it would work good for a mold release. I have used many mold releases for both epoxy, polyester and urethane casting resins. I worked as a wood patternmaker and we also did a lot of epoxy casting and laminating. I will try and remember the name of the best stuff we used. I retired 7 years ago and the name has slipped my mind. Ok I went out to glue some rings together and remembered. It is called Stoner Mold Release. But I am curious how the paste works for that. Should be good. Thanks again Larry. Gary

Hi Tom glad you liked it. I don't think there would be any difference with the rottenstone. My understanding is that Tripole and rottenstone are the same. @@ThePapa1947 I buy it in 1 lb boxes. As only a bit is needed for each batch, a box lasts a long time. Pumice is calcium and as such is food safe. ANY finish used in woodworking is food safe once it cures. The curing process eliminates any noxious elements in the finish.

Hi I made a batch and it works great. Is it ok to use non food grade diatomaceous earth or should you use food grade. Also can you used beeswax straight from the hive or does it have to bee purified thanks Mike
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, From what I have read the bug grade is similar to the food grade richsoil.com/diatomaceous-earth.jsp That article talks about farmers putting it on the grain they store to kill bugs. The same grain we eat. Reading that article might clear things up. I know that pool grade is a lot more course so not good for human consumption. I am confused on the differences myself. To be safe only use what you are comfortable with. As far as beeswax goes I am not sure what all is in the non purified beeswax so I am not sure. I would wonder if the debris in the non purified would interfere with the process. Hope this helps Gary

Hi Tom I did try it on my upcoming turning and it worked great. I finish it with Howard Feed and Wax because I am not sure if the beeswax would prevent the lacquer from curing. I will have to do some testing but in my mind the wax on top is just fine but not under. I think using an oil finish should work fine though. I like to experiment so I will be doing that. I would have used Tripoli but could not find it locally but I might order some just to test. What color is the Tripoli you used? Thanks again. Gary

@@ThePapa1947 I've seen people use wipe on poly and lacquer over Hampshire Sheen,,,which I think must also have some sort of wax in it. I really don't agree with this because applying a lacquer or poly finish over wax just doesn't make sense to me,although I've never tried it with my sanding paste. My Tripoli powder is sort of a pinkish color.I know that Tripoli powder comes in different grits and quality so I'm not sure what "grit" mine is but it does do a good job with minimal discoloration.I used to buy it in 5 lb bags but I just did a search for it and came up empty! Thank you for sharing your recipe. You must have read my mind because I've been looking for a way to make something similar to Yorkshire grit and this seems to be very close. A small question; is diatomeas earth the same as pumice?
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 5 жыл бұрын
You are very welcome. I believe that pumice is volcanic and the diatomaceous earth if fossilised plant life. My guess in use it would be about the same. Also diatomaceous earth is very similar to the tripoli powder which is rottenstone. I know that diatomaceous earth is used in toothpaste. I have used toothpaste for years to polish things and never really thought about what was in it. By the way I enjoy your segment work and have been doing segments for many years. I am working on a new glue up turning now that has some segments in it. Slow process as there is lots of cutting and gluing. But I am in no hurry. Thanks for commenting. Gary

@@ThePapa1947 pumice certainly is volcanic. We have a lot of it here in the North Island of New Zealand, thanks to the chain of volcanoes running from Whakaari/White Island, through the Rotorua area, on to Ruapehu and his brothers Tongariro and Ngauruhoe on the Central Plateau, out to Taranaki on the western coast. Not forgetting their grand-daddy, Taupõ, our biggest lake, smack in the middle. Pumice works great in the industrial-strength soap my son cleans his working-man hands with. The finer you grind it, the more shine you get! (Also, don't breathe the dust...)

Very helpful video, Gary! So, you are using this as the final step in the finishing process, right? You are not putting anything over it? I see where it would be a great addition to get the smoothest finish possible. And so inexpensive and easy to make, thanks to your video! Phil

Thanks Phil and yes I am using over lacquer or shellac. Nothing after that. But on the warped apple bowl I just did I used it on bare wood then finished with Howard. And that works great. @josephwise485
@josephwise485 5 жыл бұрын
If I understand you right, your paste is used after finishing with lacquer or shellac. If used on bare wood, because of the mineral oil, you use a finish that has mineral oil and wax in it. Would this be the same type of sanding paste that I have seen used, to keep down the dust when people sand? I always wondered what type of finish would be used after sanding, if any. Nice video, thanks for sharing.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph yes you understand correctly. I use it over the top of lacquer and shellac. Wipe on poly as well. If I used it on bare would I would use an oil or wax finish. As a matter of fact I did just that and used Howard Feed & Wax which is an oil and wax finish. I like the results. My understanding of some of the stuff used to keep the dust down is used with sandpaper. So it seems like it is sort of like wet sanding which I have done over lacquer using 500 grit paper and water. I prefer using something like this mix I just did though. Thanks for watching. Gary

@@ThePapa1947 I made a small batch and used it on bare wood sanded to 400. I applied the paste buffed it until there was no more residue on a clean paper towel. The paste produced as good a finish as shellac. I wiped on shellac and then shine juice, that gave me the best finish ever

Mike that is fantastic. I tried it on a piece of bare apple a few weeks after I did this video and was very pleased with the results. I used my polishing paste on top of it and it gave it a very nice finish. Glad you tried the shellac over it now I will consider doing that as well. Knowing me I will probably use the abrasive paste on the shellac after putting it on. Thanks for the feedback it is very helpful. Gary

Hello Gary, thanks for the interesting video. I just ordered the ingredients on the internet to try your paste. Although I would use it differently as a habit. I usually work by first applying a pore filler (after sanding, ect.) and then spraying on at least 10 layers of high-gloss clear coat lacquer. Then I polish creamy carnauba wax over it. A few drops are enough and you have an incredible shine and haptics! If I understand your video correctly, you do it the other way round. First lacquer and then the grinding paste and polishing paste. If I continue as before, I wonder if the lacquer sticks to your paste or not. Have you tried this and have experience with it? Thanks in advance and best regards from Austria, Gerhard.

Thank you Gerhard, I do it this way as a habit as well. But I do see where people use one coat of sealer then apply the paste and wax. And then they might use a friction polish over it. And I think the paste they use has a wax in it as well. I have used shellac over the top just to try it and it seems to work have not tried with lacquer. I would experiment before really doing a nice piece. Let me know what you come up with as I always like learning something new. Take care, Gary

ThankQ papa. Why use mineral oil? I understand mineral oil never hardens. Wood it be ok to use walnut oil instead? I understad that walnut oil will harden after seversl days, or am i wrong. Anybody, correct me if I am wrong.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 5 жыл бұрын
You are correct about the walnut oil getting hard. As far as the mineral oil goes I think most of it wipes off. It is just acting as a carrier for the diatomaceous earth and the beeswax. But I used it over lacquer and shellac so it does not get in the grain. I did use some on bare apple wood and then finished it with Howard Feed and Wax. So any mineral oil that might be left would be mixed with that finish. Something to think about for sure.

Please tell me if you still have something that you used this type of paste on that is over a year old, and how shiny it looks now. I've used mix of mineral oil, bees, and carbona waxes. It looks great when done, but the shine disappears over time. Hopefully you or someone else can answer this question. I appreciate any responses in advance. I would like to make this, if it lasts.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin I use it over lacquer and shellac to give those finishes a high polish. So they will stay shiny. I have not used it on bare wood so I can not speak to that. What it does is acts like very fine sand paper so it gives it a good chance to have a high luster finish which should last longer. I did recently use it to do a final sanding on an apple wood turning right after the last 400 grit sanding. And it certainly brought a luster to the wood which should stay. I will watch it and see. Thanks for watching and your question. Gary

ThePapa1947 So you use it as a finish polish. I have used McGuires auto polish. I will have to make some and try on wipe on poly for when high gloss is desired. Have seen many of your videos, you do some beautiful work! Respectfully,

Thank you Kevin I appreciate you watching. Yes I am using it as a finish polish. I have thought about using Mothers Polish. I am sure you know what that is. I also had some car finishing compound that was something like 4000 grit. But I guess I tossed it years ago. I think they end up doing the same thing my paste does. Its an ultra fine polishing compound. I use wipe on poly that I mix and I know the sanding paste will work great there also. Thanks again, Gary

Watching your recent videos I am led to believe you no longer make your own abrasive paste. It appears you now prefer Ack's paste and polish combination. Have you given up on making your own abrasive paste? Do you both make and purchase? If you have both on hand how do you decide which to use?
