This is one of my practical wood turning projects. With inspiration from Kyle Toth, I increased the capacity of my wood turning lathe by making my own riser blocks.

Very nice. Might be trying this with my Harbor Freight lathe

it did not even occur to me to put a block of wood with sandpaper on it on the lathe and use it as a disc sander. great trick. also very good build!

Thank you! I have an older small lathe I don’t want to spend the $ to replace. I already converted to DC variable speed for $50, so this will give me capacity to do large bowls!

I see that you stepped right up and solved that problem. Looking forward to seeing how well the larger capacity does. Thank you for sharing.

I love it. I was about to get this lathe, but just discovered there is a Rikon 70-150VSR with outbound turning of 15". Seems to be about the same otherwise.

I was just thinking about this today and hopped on youtube to see if anyone had done it! I have basically the same lathe as you but mine is Record Power branded. Have been wanting to turn spoons so need more swing to accomodate the handle... might go scrap hunting for some thick steel or iron but if I can't find anything I'll try these blocks.

Another awesome video man. I'm going to turn my 14 inch Jet into a 20 inch jet. I'd prefer to just get a longer post on the tool rest. I don't know if I can order one or if i have to do what you did. Also, with 20inches that disc sander jig is a "must make" as well

How do you increase belt length? I want to raise my lathe 3" on my harbor freight lathe.
@SteveBueche10275 жыл бұрын
Arthur Smith use a string and measure all the way around both pulleys. Search on line for that measurement. The challenge is the micro adjustment for tension and installation. I haven’t built mine yet so I can’t give you a definitive answer.
@FranklinWoodWorks20165 жыл бұрын
@@arthursmith3154 Jackson Brown is correct. Just measure the dimensions you will need (don't forget width and groove type) and search online. I found mine at RockAuto.com.
@FranklinWoodWorks20165 жыл бұрын
Or, measure your current belt, add the amount of rise you're adding x 2, and that's the length you'll need. Example: Currently have a 20 inch belt - adding 2 inches of rise which increases capacity by 4 inches. 20 + 4 =24 for the new belt.

I have the smaller rikon that I have to move the belts to change speeds. Where did you find a longer drive belt and is yours grooved like mine? I'm having trouble finding the stock belt as rikon seems to be always sold out but I'm wanting to add height like yours. Thanks, and great bowl, I watched it first.
@FranklinWoodWorks20164 жыл бұрын
I was able to go to an automotive belt manufacturer's website, plug in the dimensions and belt type, and come up with a solution. The description of the belt I ordered was an exact match (I think the belt was supposed to have 5 grooves). When the belt arrived, it only had four grooves. It's a little noisy, but the belt works. It may wear out a little faster because of the mismatched grooves, but so far so good.

Nice, but the only problem I see is that nut on the banjo. Do you remember what thread count it is?
@FranklinWoodWorks20162 жыл бұрын
When I purchased the longer bolt for the banjo, I just bought the nut that fit the bolt. The way my banjo works, there is a "floating washer" that tightens against rails, So the the nut size doesn't really matter.

Cool... But I wonder if you can still reach the sides of a big bowl, isn't that toolrest too short?
@FranklinWoodWorks20165 жыл бұрын
I have a bunch of tool rests. The big sanding "disk" at the end of the video is 19 1/2 inches in diameter. I have a tool rest that reaches around to get the sides of that. I should have thought about that potential question when I put my smallest tool rest in the video. Thanks for commenting, and I appreciate you watching!

Where did you buy your belt from
@sdad464 жыл бұрын
Hi, I have a midi lathe with the same configuration as yours, that is the motor is mounted beneath the bed and uses a belt with 3 pulleys to set speed ranges. You talk briefly about the belt but dropped it. You obviously found a belt sized for the increase in length, but from what I understood you'd still need 3 belts, one for each riser. What am I missing here? Unless you chose to use all 3 risers all the time? Must be you did because you said something about glueing all the risers together.
@FranklinWoodWorks20164 жыл бұрын
I ended up with just the one belt. The project was almost a loss because I didn't consider the stationary motor. But, the end result was great.

What size belt did you use?
@givikvachantiradze82562 жыл бұрын
Hello! Did you have to change the belt for the electric motor too?
@FranklinWoodWorks20162 жыл бұрын
Yes I did. I had to measure the length I needed, go to the Gates website (belts for cars and such) and find a belt that suited my needs.

This probably isn't the place for this questions, but I am going to ask anyway. How are the riser blocks holding up on your lathe.? What kind of wood did you use?
