My mother is the best because she never forces anyone to smile for pictures, in fact she gets frustrated when people force themselves because then the pictures are nothing but a lie. Not everyone is happy or looks happy, and that's okay to her. And when a person who never usually smiles genuinely smiles for a photo, it means so much more.

Yeah, some people just can't smile easily. When trying to smile, they say we don't look happy and they say it again, "Smile!", so we try harder. Then after we try harder, then complain, then when we say, "I *am* smiling." they get mad, thinking that you're trying to be difficult to work with. Then they tell other people, and those other people then assume you will do that. Then when it comes time for them to take your picture, the cycle repeats.

I hate pictures for this exact reason. Being forced to smile when you're not truly happy is ridiculous, and getting criticized for looking dead inside is embarrassing.

Just pretend that you're smiling as a bit and then your smile will be natural because you're doing a bit and bits make people smile

I’m a very stoic and reserved person, so I don’t really smile unless something makes me smile. I’ve always hated taking pictures for family photos because I can do a fake smile, I can only do a small, shy, little smirk.

Dude this hits me so hard. I’m the type of person who has a deadpan, often called intimidating, face if I’m not actively laughing or extremely happy. When I was at Disney world when I was in elementary, we were taking pictures in a photoshoot area, and I hated Goofy, but my parents and friend insisted we take the photo. When I put on my smile, I just remember being told over and over to smile by both my mom and the camera man. I had to raise my voice and say “I AM” for them to finally take the picture. After my mom said that the photo looked off because of my smile. She said she knew I didn’t want the pic, but didn’t need to do that. I was actually trying tho. I never said anything, but its messed me up with photo taking, to say the least. Who’s Lila hit me super hard, and on to of that, I just got evaluated for being on the spectrum a month ago, going in August for testing. So yeah, this is dead on what it feels like, for me at least. Fantastic job! Rant over lol Also I am doing better now with photo taking, because I do a lot of cosplaying and make a bunch of photos and videos, which has helped me a lot over the years with that self consciousness :D

Smiling is like walking for me if I think about doing it, I’ll forget how to and end up doing it weird. Also I don’t use my face muscles that much so it’s fatiguing/feels odd to smile for longer than a few seconds
