I made this solar filter for my Seestar S50 smart telescope from ZWO. While the S50 comes equipped with a perfectly fine solar filter, I crafted my own using a 3D printed cell and high-quality Baadar Solar Filter paper. In this video I show you the steps I took to make the filter and I compare the images captured by both filters.

Disclaimer:
Solar observation and astrophotography can be inherently dangerous and should only be attempted with proper precautions and equipment. While this video demonstrates the construction of a DIY solar filter for the Seestar S50 telescope, it is imperative to understand the risks involved in observing and photographing the sun directly.
The information provided in this tutorial is for educational purposes only. By following this tutorial and constructing your own solar filter, you do so at your own risk.
I take no responsibility for any injury to persons or damage to equipment or property that may occur as a result of attempting to replicate the methods shown in this video. It is crucial to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines when engaging in solar observation and photography.
Always consult with experts and utilize certified solar observation equipment to ensure the safety of yourself, others, and your equipment. Remember to never look directly at the sun without appropriate solar filters or protective gear.
If you are 3D printing a cell like that which I have printed, ensure this cell sits firmly into the lens opening. Ensure the filter will not fall off or get blown off by wind by taping it on for extra security and peace of mind.
The cell as shown in this video is not designed to be left in place when the Seestar is shut down. The cell is thicker than the filter that comes with the S50 and will not allow the unit to return to the home position. Remove before shutting down or it may cause damage to the gears.
Stay safe, and happy imaging!

Right? Both filters produce very good results, but I prefer the white light look, and think it gives slightly more surface detail.

Besides the filters … what is the rendering and stacking software called

It's the S50 internal stacking feature.

I like the white light results. There seems to be more finer details visible although the orange filter does give it a more natural look.

Isn't it funny how we consider orange to be the natural color when it's technically white.

Skywatcher tripod! Nice. I have the same but without the pier extender. You have some kind of leveller on there looks like a great setup. I prefer the colourd Sun but I guess there is a bit more detail in the B&W

Yes I bought the AX GTI and this was the tripod. It's super sturdy and I found the pier raises the S50 up to a height where I can access the leveller without crouching.

I agree with you that the filter that came with Seestar is very good, but I also prefer the more white color. I use Thousand Oaks film, but essentially it's the same. Good thorough video. Thanks.

Thanks! It's been on my list to try a Thousand Oaks filter so it's good to know there isn't much difference. I like the idea of a solid filter but wonder are they prone to damage.

@@StargazerMan On April 8th if we have clear skies I'll be using an ICE ND 10000 filter on my Seestar. It's a 55mm camera filter that I 3D printed an adapter for. Got the plan on Thingiverse. I like this filter the most for Seestar. It's a glass filter, and I think it gives the best detail on the surface of the sun.

Thanks I'll check it out. Time to buy one I guess. Best of luck for the eclipse!

The Baader filter shows more fine detail. I’ve seen the same with my comparisons! What was the final effective clear aperture diameter of the DIY filter? The original is only 40mm!🎉
@StargazerMan
@StargazerMan 3 ай бұрын
Mine is 40mm also. That's not a problem. In fact it could be less as all I'm looking for is the suns surface.

I tried this yesterday. Using the original seeStar filter, removing that film. And then replacing it. the replacement film without glue seems very flimsy like a gust of wind would blow it
@StargazerMan

Interesting! Will you be able to switch between the two?

@@StargazerMan in theory I could put the original film back in I guess. I just like the looks of the white film better but it just seems so flimsy.

@@StargazerMan I don’t have a 3-D printer. Seems like something I should’ve invested in. :)

The Baader film is definitely a lot thinner but I've never found wind to be an issue. I've a 4" home made filter and although it does occasionally 'ripple' a bit in the wind it's never caused any major issues.
