I started this journey as a newbie 6 months ago. The S50 is my first. I'm kinda old and retired, so a 6 lb scope works for me. I did hundreds of hours of research and then stumbled on the S50. I was heading down the big rig $10K path. I thought $500, why not try. Embracing technology I say to naysayers. I've been having so much fun with this scope, which includes sharing with family and friends. Will I buy the next gen? Probably yes. I have over 100 images of galaxies and nebula so far. I find myself constantly checking the weather. Don't plan on stopping any time soon.
@StargazerMan19 сағат бұрын
Sounds like you've been bit by the bug! This is exactly what this scope if great for. If you bought all the expensive heavy gear you'd have had a much steeper learning curve and way fewer successful shots. You may have even at this point gotten so frustrated that you decided it's not for you and sold the gear! At least now with the S50 you've learned the basics and have images you can share with people. Everything you do from here on is an improvement. Also, the weight factor is a real issue for sure. Also for Big DOB guys (like myself) you really need to stay fit and strong to lift and setup some of this stuff! Clear skies.

So can this model's base body be disassembled and reassembled all the time? For my skywatcher dob, I can not disassemble the body. It was just two parts of base body and tube.
@StargazerMan19 күн бұрын
No it's the same, what I did was to make my own base out of marine plywood (much lighter and water resistant). Simply because the base was too bulky (and heavy!) to transport to my observing location. Here's a link to some images of how I did it. (I also made more modifications where I've attached wheels and poles so I can half assemble on site and move around) www.flickr.com/gp/franks_astrophotography/P8jLM90WB8

This looks really good , thanks for posting it is quite an inspiration. May I ask how much friction is there in your azimuth mount. I have a 12" dob with the same type of plywood box mount but I am worried I have too much friction in the bottom for a stepper to turn ? Just looking for your opinion. I could get some rollers and mod the bottom if needed I guess.
@StargazerMan26 күн бұрын
Thanks! I reckon for a 12" you'll not have any problems with the reccomended motor (ask Erik from Romer and he'll help you pick the right one, he's super friendly and knowledgeable) he's on Facebook Messenger if you search Romer Optics and really quick to reply. My 16" in this video is quite an effort to turn which is why I needed the higher torque motor. The drawback is that the stepper motors constantly draw current so I really only have the motors engaged when observing. I don't use the go-to from start to finish. When Im going to the next target, I disengage the clutch, select the object then hit go-to and manually slew. When I'm near the object I let go and the drives kick in for the final honing in.

The ring light actually does turn to red when you begin recording in astro mode... but its probably better off turning it completely off anyhow because I have found that I only get between 3-4 hours per battery with this thing. I am wondering if the Dwarf 3 will be more power efficient as well? I understand that the 3rd gen will have a 10000mah internal battery compared to the 5600mah external ones we have on the D2. I do appreciate the D2 being able to connect through usb directly to a power bank to maintain longer uptimes while imaging. I have been impressed with the quality of the images I have been getting from this little telescope. I wish the Dwarf was better when it comes to imaging the planets, but besides that, its amazing.
@StargazerMan28 күн бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out. Indeed it does turn red. Lights on equipment (especially astrophotography) isn't really an issue as you are not visually observing therefore you do not need to have full dark adaption (I've another video on this about making your phone red light but also shows how your eyes actually become dark adapted and it's not just your pupals opening). My issue was I was out with our club and it's a mix of visual and imaging people. So I definitely had to prevent any stray light :-) If you're out on your own or with other astrophotographers it's no issue! I would assume the D3 will have a longer running time with the higher capacity battery, again I reckon you'll be able to charge on the fly if needed.

Not sure how well it will do with the extra weight but think it will be fine. If not, I will try out the Rigel. I too was also expecting it to look a lot taller like you said. The one thing I am still not sure about it is the button cell battery. 2 AA used in the Telrad will last for a very long time for sure! I forgot to turn it off for over a month and it was still powered up! But the last time I accidentally left it on I may have left it on too long and that causes the batteries to form some corrosion on all the internal parts. Ordered a new one so that is how I got an extra mounting plate. Do you know how long in comparison the batteries last in the Rigel?
