@@QrooSpanish There´s only 4,000 Spanish books on sale right now and all but three suck. I´m going to write the Scorpio Spanish book and I´m going to call it The Alien´s Guide to the Spanish Language. One of the reasons, unrelated to your tee shirts why I watch your channel is, you like to strip away some of the BS that grammaticians have stuck into the language, Brits and Americans have totally confused and 27 countries are fighting over the rights to dominate. However, if you´d spent as much time defunking the language as I have, Linda would have divorced you by now. There is SO MUCH CRAP... which is a question for me as to why you recommend that book, Satan´s personal guide to Lawyering up on Spanish or whatever it´s called. I bought it and I truly hate it. It´s like BS times 10 on the BS scale.

These videos are great. Thank you qroo Paul. If any ones cares to hear my two cents. I would recommend reading books as well. Starting at children's books and working up to advanced books. It gets pretty easy to get to a medium level of Spanish but to talk like a real native person you will need to understand how to utilize the verbs correctly. It's unbelievably easy to feel like you are talking in spanish and just rattling off great spanish until you find out you don't make any sense and then feel dumb for a while. Lol. But once you get past that it really feels great speaking spanish. Seeing peoples faces like 😵😵😵😵 because they didn't expect someone to speak to them is always priceless. I think that reading gives you a lot of context and when you are talking to someone your mind is already trying to guess what they are saying to make it make sense. Anyway. Thank you qroo Paul for helping us. I have my pasaporte and can't wait to travel to México once I save up some money.

@Rosemary McGowan yes I think that is usually what's implied. Critical applications of material is the only way to learn. Like how to conjugate acercarse. Juliana se me acercó ayer. If you don't know how to say it it could end up sounding like an English sentence. So anyway you just apply the critical material in other concepts with other se verbs.

Thanks for the reminder about all Word Reference has to offer, in terms of sayings, the forum, etc. I can lose myself in WR, as one word leads to another phrase leads to another saying. I’ve been using the phrases “sacar de quicio” (drive someone crazy) and “fuera de quicio” (out of one’s mind) for years, without ever realizing “quicio” means doorframe or door jamb. A related phrase is “estar cuerdo” (or for me as a female, “estar cuerda”) “to be in one’s right mind”. And “cuerda” (which means rope, cord or string, as well as a musical “chord”) led me to its colloquial uses and I found a new phrase, which I hadn’t heard before: “mentar la cuerda en casa del ahorcado” or “nombrar la soga en casa del ahorcado” which means to bring up a sensitive subject or say the wrong thing, but literally means “to mention the noose in the house of the man who was hanged”. And then I looked up “mentar”, which I have only occasionally heard and kind of wondered about. It actually means “to mention” (as opposed to “mentir” - to lie). Where I’ve actually heard “mentar” is the phrase “mentar la madre” (“mention the mother”) which means to insult someone. I always thought I must be hearing wrong, and they were saying, “meter la madre” (to bring the mother into something). Now I know. It’s a rabbit hole, Paul, a delightful, interesting rabbit hole for those who love Spanish - but one which I have to pull myself out of and get ready for work! 😂

I make flash cards on anki and went from single words to ‘words + prepositions’ , phrases , expressions and other ‘chunks’ from the books I read. I realize how much of speaking in English is made out of set phrases that I don’t really think about. They exist in Spanish and the more I learn the less I chew up the language in an attempt to make phrases that don’t exist .

I have experimented with my learning methods. Methods came from others ideas, some that came up just from experience as to what worked for me and also research new technology. Paul imagine you have your word / phrase/ grammar lists in front of you. If like me you ended up with 20 notebooks full of words/phrases/grammar/expressions etc. The question I have is how did YOU review these lists. I use Anki because it has built in spaced repetition reviews and it’s searchable. I also save most in Google Drive in the cloud so I can do advanced searches to find a word or phrase or grammar concept. But you haven’t told us HOW you review the lists, how often or is it based on a secondary encounter with a word or phrase and as you learn more about a word phrase or grammar point do you edit your list. How searchable are/were your lists? Having 20 notebooks make finding anything time consuming. When I started out I saved all my handwritten notes, highlighted new words (green), new phrases (yellow) new grammar (orange), expressions (blue) and not clear to me (pink). Then I started saving in Anki. I had to do this because otherwise I rarely went back to my handwritten notes to review but handwriting was a key factor as I’m a visual learner. So eventually I took handwritten notes and put them into Google Docs still using my highlighting method plus putting docs into file folders based on topic or source while still putting them in Anki. I would find other examples online at any number of sites and save them. As well I would download articles from sites like Avanzado Español, Ejemplos etc. into Google Docs as well. Now maybe you have really good recall and you don’t need to review so much. I still review even some basic concepts because I forget. I think it’s important to note this is only the input side of learning; I still need output methods but I won’t get into that here. Two things that definitely didn’t work for me. I would write out sentences and stories using what I had learned. I would then record what I had written. Problem to me was I didn’t know what I had written was correct or had I said it with good pronunciation so I gave that up. I think this is where AI will help or you hire a teacher. Second was music. That I didn’t enjoy because I can’t make out the lyrics are even in English. Some people love learning a language through music, I found it frustrating even though there are some great sites. I’m interested in knowing more about your steps from A to Z.
@QrooSpanish

The most recent things I learned were always last on my list. I would quiz myself by covering up either the word or the meaning. I found that it wasn't long before I was getting them easily and that's when I would stop reviewing the earlier ones. I found myself only needing to review the last 30 or so; however, I would occasionally go back and scan over the older material. I always like liked the old-school notebook method. It helped me to write them out.

Thanks for another useful video. I have a question raised by another recent video. You explained that all reflexive verbs are pronominal but that not all pronominal verbs are reflexive. I get that, thanks in large part to your examples of lavarse (both) and quejarse (just pronominal). Your third example, dormirse has me scratching mi cabeza. To fall asleep...are you doing that to yourself? I'd like to hear your thoughts about dormirse and similar pronominal verbs. @QrooSpanish
@QrooSpanish 11 ай бұрын
I preferred to have an actual pad that I would write in. I would write the word or phrase in one side and the definition on the other. I would cover one side to quiz myself. I would alternate sides. With new vocabulary, I would review it at least once during the day and then before bed. I found I retained the most that way. I would continually add to the list. Once I knew the vocab well, I would only review it every week or two. That way I was always focusing primarily on the newest material until I had that down pat.

I preferred a notebook. I would write the word or phrase on one side and the definition on the other so I could cover either one up easily. I would review it preiodically through the day and then just before bed. I found my retention was a lot better when I started doing that. After awhile, it will be clear that you know the list up to a certain point. That's when I would only focus on studying that point forward. I would occasionally scan over the older material to make sure I still knew it. That would be every couple of weeks.

How do you know what tense to use? Is it somthing that is just repetition or should I be learning one tense at a time? I find it challenging because in english I dont know the grammar rules to compare them against. I just use them automatically like how your wife does in spanish.

It helps to learn the conjugations for one tense at a time. I recommend learning these ones first: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9KEnb2Xp7_IfYk.html

Knew I’d find you here. Qroo, tell Linda she interrupted my happy home the other day. You mentioned she prefers Habaneros. On instinct I bit a jalapeño and disgustedly threw it down, put on a bra and went to buy some real heat. I bought Serranos and I have been happy as a clam! Muy contenta. Much obliged, mi hermana, Linda.

I'm now convinced that you're spying on me. I haven't watched the video yet. But I'm in the process of creating a Spanish Word List (really), wondering how best to organise it and not making a lot of progress. I'll let you know whether or not your advice was helpful. 🤔

Awesome website. However, the book you recommend is way too involved for people speaking at this level in my opinion. I do believe though that when you get to a more advanced level, it would be very useful . Thanks Paul. 💛

I think it's a book that they can use throughout their journey. I remember early on when I had a question about word order with adjectives. I went right to that section and the book cleared lt up for me. I referred back to it for years but I started with it on year one of learning.

Got some "Tico" expressions from a little phrase book I have Dame sólo un chancecito y te ayudo. Just give me a moment and I’ll help you. Hoy tengo que ir a Chepe en lata. Today I’ve got to go to San José on the bus. ¿Cómo estás?--¡Pura vida! ¿Y vos? How ya doin’?? It’s all good! How ‘bout you? [I’ve heard pura vida and likely you’ll hear it a lot[ I’ll be curious what you pick up while in Costa Rica.

Los Ticos are well known for using diminutive forms. And “pura vida” is synonymous with Costa Rica in my books. I have a dear friend who is like a sister to me from San Ramón, Alajuela.
