Collaborative project with Wood By Wright to make an ulu knife.
Watch the rest of the build here:
• Ulu Knife With Black B...
• How to Make an Ulu Kni...
Decided to make the blade of this ulu without redoing any hardening on the sawblade, the steel from this kind of sawblades (without carbide tips) should be all hardened. The one I have used here it was all hardened indeed.
To make an usable knife this way the most important thing to keep in mind is to not overheat the steel where the cutting edge will be.
Of course grinding and drilling hard steel is much harder compared to annealed steel, but if you don't have any thermal treatment equipment or even just for the fun of it it's still a great way to make something that will perform well!
Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you liked the video!
Suggestions and comments are welcome.

Take a 10d nail, clip the head off it, chuck it in the drill and run it at the press’s top rpms in the punch until the blade heats up red hot. Let it cool, the blade will be annealed and soft enough to drill with a standard bit.

Very nice blade. I have made a few Ulus using circular saw blades. My favorite Ulu is made from an old 12" blade from my compound miter saw. I use Cobalt bits to dril the rivet holes but that masonry bit resharpen is a freat tip.

440 or 880 steel will gold an edge. That saw blade is probably made of one of those steel ratings because it has to cut a lot of wood. Look into the steel grading system. The higher the number the harder the steel.
