side note, yes layering eats up your pencil, it's normal. When I just started out, and my pencils get eat up like crazy, I thought I was doing something wrong, because of this guilt of using up my pencils quickly. But, if you really want the look, relax and just sharpen your pencil. For whoever need to see this because they have anxiety sharpening their pencil lol

On the other hand... purism in CP more harms than helps. To use watercolor or thin acrilics as underlayer before you apply the CP can help you end up with a good coverage with less effort and less CP usage.

I love the humor you add to your videos. I cracked up at the "Breaking the law! Breaking the law!" reference! Quick story. When I was training to be a 911 dispatcher we had to do ride-longs with the police. The officer that I was assigned to ride with at the patrol car points to the shot gun and asks, "Do you know how to use that?" I replied "Yes". "If I need you to use it I'll tell you when and how!" The next bit of instruction was that I could be dropped off in the middle of the freeway, or along a remote country roadside at the last minute. Someone would come after me when they had a chance. Then he asked if I was afraid of going fast? I stated the obvious, "that's a rollbar right?" "Yes" he curtly responded. "Then no, I'm good!" I said with more awkwardness than a 7th grader's first dance. Then the final commandment of the day, "Ye don't have a choice in music, we listen to my music." Then we were off. We live in a smallish-medium size town where everyone is friendly. The sun was out and we had the windows down. Just as we're entering downtown the song, "Breaking the Law! Breaking the Law!" comes on. I'll never forget that Thank you Trooper Kelly!

Some other things that I have learned over time are, if you sharpen your pencils to a fine point (you can do this by turning your pencil as you shade, so you keep a fine point) you can get into the tooth without flattening it, thus getting more layers without using as much pencil. If you end up flattening the tooth before you are ready, some workable fixative in very light layers, can give you some texture for the pencil to grip onto to continue layering. If you burnish too hard, you can get wax "bloom" (a white haze) after a bit of time. You can wipe that off with a soft tissue. Again workable fixative can help prevent that. You can blend/burnish with a stump instead of white if you want to keep your colors brighter. OMS is wonderful!!!! my 2 cents

Fun video, Lisa. I like how you included your husband in the comedic parts. I am guessing the wine on the happiness tray was a serious moment. Haha. I agree with that choice. The techniques, incl when to use Derwent Chinese White and OMS was helpful. I use the OMS to get rid of the dots. I tend to press a bit too hard, but I work in fewer layers anyway like 4 in most places, so has not been a big issue for me most of the time and I can start using OMS after layer 1 or 2. I want to try more and lighter layers the next time I do skin to be more subtle next time with the build up of colors.... I am overdue to do a human portrait again.

So creative how you add your husband and love how you dressed your dog up that was so cute!! I need my hubby to make me an art tray like that too!. Do you have any tips for making your blending look smooth- like the values from light to dark of the same color (blue/ green/ graphite) . When I have a large piece I am working on it is hard to make the blending look smooth across the whole area- ie, sky, water, or background … ? I hope this question is not confusing how I asked it..
@Lachri
@Lachri 2 жыл бұрын
Lol my dog didn't want to give my clothes back when I was done filming 😂 For the blending, make sure you're overlapping one color over the next. Let's say you went from a dark blue up to light. Lay your medium blue everywhere, then overlap the dark on that and lighter colors where those need to be, right over the medium base blue.

Lisa, great tips (many of which I need to take to heart). Question: if I don't want to deal with OMS and use watercolor pencils, it would be same kind of deal except that I wouldn't need to have as much pigment on the paper before blending/wetting, right?
@Lachri

You can get the same (or very similar) end result but they would be applied/layered differently. I'm going to make a video comparing the two in a few weeks! Thanks for the idea!
