Use an exacto knife to sharpen the lead itself and then you only have to use a sharpener when the lead gets to close the the wood.

A little tip for the last one. When you drew the sketch or outline for a picture, just leave it and go back to it the next day. It helped me a lot in noticeing quite some mistakes and errors I made and hence got a better result when I finished the drawing. :)

Lachri Fine Art I am so surprised, I have been coloured pencil for only 1 year, I have been an oil painter for many years. People find it amazing that they don't realize that it takes many many layer to achieve the proper amount of pigment to the substrate. Intuitively I realized that with more and more layers, without pressing too hard gives you the proper texture and feel that you really want.

I don't use white as a drawing surface. . .I don't layer very much, as I like a slightly less smooth finish to my drawings. . .I usually layer the most when I'm combining colors to achieve a particular shade. . .I try to let the color of my drawing surface assist in the blending as I transition from darker to lighter tones. . .I also never work on a smooth drawing surface. . .In this way I achieve just a bit rougher but still finished look, using more of a feathered transition than a smooth burnished look. . .For this reason I never use any "spirits" to assist in blending. . .Just my preference. . .Your work is exceptional and I admire your results!

I just started with colored pencils but I’ve been using graphite pencils for awhile and there’s no way ill make these mistakes. I’ve made them before when I was starting to work seriously on my art but I learned from them. One thing I do want to start comprehending is that not every time I pick up my pencil that I’m going to make a masterpiece, because I would be devestated more than happy all the time.

This is so interesting! Thanks for the tips. As a watercolor artist in my earlier years, I was told to not put in so much detail and stop sooner than later or the painting will look contrived and over worked. Loose, slap happy stuff you know. As a person who loves detail, my final mentor and teacher Master Artist Susan Harrison-Tustain, helped me know its OK to love detail in watercolor! She is the same. This is what excites some of us. Thanks again!

I really agree with you that if an artist is getting the results they want, then it's not a mistake. It's all about your personal goals and techniques you use to get there. 👍

I totally see what you mean by the pencil needing to be sharp to get into the nooks and crannies (or what they're called) of the paper. But at the same time, it's MUCH harder to get a smooth and even result if you're colouring any larger areas with the same colour and the same shade. So, how do you keep a sharp pencil and still colour smoothly at the same time? I think it's much easier to colour smoothly if the pencil isn't too sharp. Question: The bird you showed. What did you use to get the white and light blues in the shadows in there after you had already coloured it brown?

I'm a beginner so I've no idea, however I did see some artists using an electric eraser to remove some of the colour afterwards to bring out highlights.

Great video Lisa. I had to learn a lot of these the hard way. Especially the mineral spirits. I would use to much as first and wouldn't have a lot of layers down.
