Very helpful again as always. I don't have to worry about varnish yet because my paintings still look like they have been painted by a slow blind kid.

Any thoughts on brush on varnishes?
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 3 жыл бұрын
Brush varnish is great BUT if you are new to varnish, Spray is best to start with. If your not careful brush varnish can leave brush marks on the painting as it dries. Which can look off putting if you weren't going for that effect.

Excellent! Two quick questions: 1) Can I varnish acrylics? and 2) Bought a frame from Amazon for a stretched canvas. It came with an "acrylic glass". Do you put a "glass" covering over an acrylic or oil painting? Seems like there might be some sticking or perhaps detract from the texture of the painting. Thank you soooo much. You're the absolute best!
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can varnish acrylic paint. The glass is more for photo or digital art. However you can use a glass cover if you like. It will help protect the art from UV rays and such. BUT your thinking is right, it would distract from the natural texture of the paint.

Brilliant and informative video, thank you. ❤️😍. I am still having fun painting on MDF but I have a couple of painting I like that I am thinking of framing. One of them still waiting to dry after following one of your videos. Never though of varnishing them as well, so great idea and best way to do this for a beginner. 😊 Have you varnished any oil paintings done on MDF, and any idea about how best to frame painting. Take care and stay safe.
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 3 жыл бұрын
I have sprayed varnished a few MDF paintings BUT I have not framed any at the moment. If you were to frame them you would want to look for frames that can accommodate the thickness of MDF. Generally this means you have to spend a little more money, since sunk frames are not cheap. I would keep an eye out for when there is a sale and maybe pounce on it then.

How long do you need to wait after finishing an oil painting (w/palette knife) before you apply varnish?
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the paints and mediums used for the painting. Acrylics and be anywhere from a few days to weeks. While Oils can be a few weeks to months to full dry for varnish.

What do you think of bottled liquid varnish ? Any reasons why sprays are better, I guess it’s easier to evenly coat with sprays - but any other reasons ?
@WildCreates
@WildCreates Жыл бұрын
Personal I think bottle brush on varnish is better. However, I think it is tougher for new painters is all. You can add to much or too little. You do it wrong and cause yellowing or cracking. You might put on an uneven coating. You may add brush marks that you can't get out. ETC. Spray varnish is more fool-proof. Once you understand the properties of varnish. Then upgrade to a brush on. Hope that makes sense.

Glad you liked it. The product I show here you can use on Acrylics too (click on the link below for more info on it ). Most varnishes work on all mediums. HOWEVER, make sure your check the can, some varnishes are made for certain mediums like oil and such. Link: geni.us/WNVarnishGlossSpray

Thanks for this and for inspiring us. One question...... how do I clean my Bob Ross type oil paintings on canvas that are about 10-12 years old and were never varnished? ...... and can I clean them, then varnish them now? Cheers 🥰
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 3 жыл бұрын
I normally just feather dust mine - The oil can be fragile so using something with a lite-touch is best. Just get yourself a cheap feather duster of amazon and that will work great.

Hello! I don't know if you'll read this, but I've been doing pottery recently and I painted it with acrylic paint. Today I started to spray it with varnish the same bottle you used, and I realised much later that I may wanted to add more acrylic paint on it.. so is it too late now or can I still paint it even I have added varnish gloss? Hope you could see this..
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 11 ай бұрын
So there are products that can remove varnish... research those. Acrylic paint is basically liquid plastic ( which can adhere to almost anything ). If the pottery is just for you. You might get away with just painting on top, let it dry, then varnish again BUT I would test that first. I hope that helps some.

Nice video but i have some questions. Is it recommended to oil out your paintings before varnishing? Also can Gamvar varnish be used and does the varnish used have to be spray on or can it be brush on varnish? Just trying to figure out what will make the painting lasts the longest amount of time. I've heard that Gamvar is easier to remove when wanting to re apply.
@WildCreates
@WildCreates Жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean by "oil out"? If you mean dry, they YES! You can use spray or brush, both work great. Spray is easier for new artists. If you plan on re-touching or re-varnish then for with a varnish that works well with that style.
@legendarygaming9576

@@WildCreates Hey, thank you very much for the info. I grabbed this from google to explain what oiling out is. "Oiling out a painting is the process of applying a small amount of linseed oil to a dry paint film. Artists will take this optional step to revive a dull or dry looking painting before varnish is applied.".
@WildCreates
@WildCreates Жыл бұрын
To be honest I have never done that to a painting because I normally varnish my paintings right after they dry completely. I do this so I dont have issues with my painting down the road.

Wild, great vid but here's a really stupid question. At what point in the drying process is it safe to varnish? I've got work that is going on 3 weeks drying and it is still tacky. Not fingerprint tacky - just tacky. Is it safe to varnish at this point or do I need to wait until it is hard/smooth dry? I really need to start using Liquin to speed up the drying process.
@WildCreates
@WildCreates Жыл бұрын
OK, so here is the thing... no simple way to answer the question without knowing your paint, mediums used, and amount of paint used on a canvas. But a general basic rule is. If it was thin or a small amount of paint: 3 to 6 months until dry. If it was thick/a lot of paint, 6 to 12 months to dry. Hope that helps a little!
@michaelgoodwin5510
@michaelgoodwin5510 Жыл бұрын

Never really heard of "Picture Varnish" Must be a general term maybe Danmar is: pale yellow varnish that dries quickly to a high gloss for use on oil and alkyd paintings If you are just starting out - The WN High gloss is greatt, easy to use, and affordable. As you advance you can move into & different and unique varnishes

How long does the wet on wet painting have to dry before varnishing
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 3 жыл бұрын
Hard question to answer because it can depend on how much/thick your oil is and if you used any mediums. But Generally oil can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to fully dry. If you used a lot of oil... it can take 6 months to a year to dry. Hope that helps a little

I assume you are talking about oil paint... if so... hard to answer. Because it depends on how thick and how many layers you used. Can be as short as a handful of weeks to more than a year.
