We have a 100-year-old six panel wooden door with its original lock and handles.
This door we want to use in our bedroom, but it has a problem, it falls through the door frame! This door is too short, and this door is too narrow.
Come along as we refurbish the door, increase its height, grow its width, then hang it in the bedroom doorframe.

Amazing. Your skills are brilliant. I’m so glad you kept it! “Respect the wood,” I always say. I always think of the sacrifice made by that tree-and very probably by the tree cutters. Those were days those poor men sawed by hand. (Photos usually show skinny, tired looking men standing on tree stumps or next to their hand tools.) You can’t truly replace the quality of the wood’s age. (We’re renovating a 1930 fishing seiner, and to think of where all that hardwood came from, almost hurts. We couldn’t bear to let it not be saved…unfortunately we couldn’t save the brass door knobs and locks. Sigh.) So glad your channel came into my newsfeed. Looking forward to watching more. 😊

Hello rizpahjael1. Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes we like wood as well. The door you saw modified is still going strong as is its rim latch lock attached to it. What was wrong with your brass door knobs and locks? It seems such a shame to loose them. Take Care Jim

Thank you! I thought this was how to do it, but wasn’t certain. Your advice about avoiding the joints is something I’d have forgotten on my own. You’ve given me the confidence to go ahead with this project. I’ll be watching part 2, plus your video about making keys for old locks.

Only a suggestion, would it not have been better to do the sides first then the top?

Enjoyed the video and learned allot. As a frugal, repurposer and DIYer I knew there must be a way to accomplish what your video showed us, just didn't know how to go about it....now I do. Thanks again.

Hello Sheila. Hope your door resizing goes to plan. It is important to leave the door you want to work on close to where you want it to live, leave it there for a few weeks, this will allow the doors water content to matches the room. As water content changes the door will change in size, the wetter the atmosphere the larger the door. Bring the doors into the house from an outside shed they will shrink a little as they dry. Have fun Jim

@@CYC123 Thanks for the advice. Sure makes sense to me. I don't suppose this idea of adding (or decreasing) size to an existing aluminum door works, does it? Perhaps that's another video idea you could show us sometime.

Hello Sheila. I haven't any aluminium doors, so the chances are I won't be covering them, sorry. Good luck with your wooden doors though. Take Care Jim

Wow Perfect video I thought it is impossible to make a old door much bigger I have a beautiful old door with the mirror that I've savaged out of old home being remodel unfortunately the previous owners who owned the house before the remodeling had cut both sides of the door ended up losing the hinges and the orginal hardware but luckily I collect old door hardware so I'm able to match it since I have other doors that came out from same house and I also got lucky found a peice of the door in the debris pile so I'll be able to find out how much thickness I need on both sides!

Hello Nestor Thank you for your comment. I’m so glad you found my video useful. Remember, if you are going to add wood to the side of your door make sure it is of the same type of wood and has been in the same room for a couple of days so it’s moisture content is equal, If you connect woods together of different types or moisture content the wood will twist as it drys. Have fun Jim.

Great video - thank you!! I have the same thing in mind. But where did you find the wood having same thickness as the door? (i.e. stile and rail parts) - I can't find anywhere and my only idea is to break down another vintage door but that seems wasteful!

Hello Stephen, Sorry not to reply sooner, I have been away for a couple of days. Where did I find the timber? Well at my local wood yard. Cant remember what the original size was before it was planed, but it's finish size was 34mm, exactly what I required. Sorry that's not much help. As you probably know I live in the UK, the wood yard I use is all metric. Are you in the UK? If your having trouble obtaining the correct size, ask the wood yard if they can cut some down for you. Of course, there will probably be a charge, but that would be better than knocking apart a good door just to get material. Thank you for your comment, sorry I couldn't be of more help. Take Care Jim

Thank you, Jim. I don't own a planar so thought maybe some suppliers have "stile stock" dimension wood. I'm in US btw. The first step of getting the right door-thickness wood is proving tricky!

Hello Stephen. I only have obvious advice, do you have a hire shop close by that has a planar on offer? Any friends, or friends of friends that have a workshop who may have what your looking for? Not much help I know, sorry. Good luck and Take Care Jim.

I have a door that i only need to widen by half an inch. Would these methods work for that or should i do something else?
@CYC123
@CYC123 Жыл бұрын
Hello Adrienne. Thank you for your comment and question. I am assuming the door you have is of solid wood construction, not the type that is hollow and covered in hardboard. If you only need to add half an inch to the width of your door you may be able to get away with adding wood to just one side of the door, the hinge side may be easier side as you don't have to mess about moving door handle mechanisms, you only have to reseat the hinges. The hinge side of the door is normally in better condition as its protected by the door frame, but you will still need to cut along the edge of the door to remove the paint and have nice clean wood to glue to. If you want to add wood to each side of the door then I think the method I show in the video will work, but if the extension piece is not very thick you may want to use several clamps and a thick plank down the outside to make sure it stays nice and flat as the glue dries. I hope this is of help. Take Care Jim
