Have you thought about all of the flowers that are going to be blooming this coming season? In this week’s “Make It Monday” learn how to make flower decorations for your home that are always in bloom with Silverwood Art Educator Seth Eberle. While spring ephemeral flowers are popping up all around us, Seth is looking forward to summer and took inspiration from 2 flowers that tend to bloom a little later in the season: a Day Lilly and Rose Mallow.

TO START: Make a mess containment board
Cover a piece of cardboard with plastic wrap, taping it firmly to the back side so that you can allow your paper mache pieces to dry without sticking to your table or cardboard surface.
**DAY LILY**
STEP 1: Cut one long piece of wire to act as the stem of the lilly. Then, cut six shorter pieces of wire for the petals. Bend the shorter pieces of wire and hang them on the edge of your plastic cup.
STEP 2:
- Stack two pieces of paper together.
- Trace the flower petal shape that you see in your research image on the top piece of paper.
- It does not have to be perfect. Flower petals have organic shapes, so it is better if they are all slightly different.
STEP 3: Cut the shape you traced out through both layers of paper.
STEP 4:
- Coat both sides of the matching petals with paper mache paste and sandwich the shorter wires between the 2 petals.
- Hang finished petals on the cup to dry being careful that they do not touch each other.
- The way that the paper dries is the way that the petal will be permanently.
STEP 5:
- Cut or tear a long strip of paper and coat both sides of it in paper mache paste.
- Wrap the strip around the metal wire to create the stem.
STEP 6:
- Cut the long, thin shape of a lilly leaf out of a piece of scrap paper folded in half, making sure that there are two matching pieces.
- Paper mache both sides of both pieces of paper and attach them to the stem so that it looks like a lilly leaf.
…ALLOW TO DRY…
STEP 7: Hot glue the petal pieces to the stem and to each other so that the piece takes on the full shape of the flower.
STEP 8: Cut and bend the edges of a few small pieces of wire to create stamens in the center of the lilly.
STEP 9: Mix paints to match the colors of your research photos. Paint all sides. Take your time and allow parts to dry between colors. Feel free to experiment and stylize the flower as you go.
