Make Me Laugh was an American game show in which contestants watched three stand-up comedians performing their acts, one at a time, earning one dollar for every second that they could make it through without laughing. Each comedian got sixty seconds to try to crack the contestant up. If a contestant succeeding in not laughing the full 3 minutes, their $180 winnings were doubled to $360. On Van's version, contestants (who were selected from the audience) that lasted the full three minutes had their winnings doubled to $360; also, a celebrity guest would play the last round of each episode, playing for an audience member who would receive a prize just for being chosen, and up to three more prizes based on how many comedians the celebrity could survive.
A number of then-unknown comics appeared on this version before going on to greater fame; among them were Bob Saget, Howie Mandel, Gallagher, Gary Mule Deer, Yakov Smirnoff, Bruce 'Babyman' Baum and Garry Shandling.
The theme music for the 1970s version was entitled Laugh, and was performed by Artie Butler and the Big Boffers.

I remember this show from when I was a kid. The 70s will return. I’ll never forget the one where the comedian came out beating the shit out of a stuffed rabbit for about 20-30 seconds before yelling, “HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU, TRIX ARE FOR KIDS!!” My brother and I thought that was the funniest goddamned thing we’d ever seen. Thank you for sharing this.

I recently saw him as a gueat judge on a repeat of Dance Fever, from 1979, here on KZfaq. The host, Denny Terrio, made sure to mention that he had been on Broadway and in several Hollywood musicals. I imagine that they probably had a good deal of professional respect for each other.

@@brainscott8198 It wasn't just that. The most recent format was too dark and unneccessarily made like all the evolving game shows of its time. Instead of fun & laid back - it became a competition where only one player won any money and the others got a booby prize... I mean a real booby prize, not even Rice A Roni. Still... the 90s version lasted longer than the original 50s ABC version and the 1979 version combined in that it was renewed for a second season.

This was a great show. Based on the fact the Bobby Vann died of cancer in 7/80 and the fact that Princesses Grace from the National Encore commercial was killed in a car wreck in 9/82, this a repeat from 1980-82 or so. BTW, the 2nd contestant was HOT! She really used her tongue a lot. I can only imagine :)

I remember when I watched in '79, there was often a commercial for an outdoor game called Zim Zam; basically tetherball with a smaller ball, with a metal coil at the top. Wow 1979! Since then I have been telling people to look up at the clouds once and awhile. I rode my bicycle throughout the neighborhood from a friends on my way home and remember SO MANY people INSIDE their homes. With the sounds of TV coming from inside. Told my dad to come outside because the clouds and evening dusk were awesome. I believe, at least in my neighborhood, I may have been responsible for starting a new trend. The trend was moving a TV set to a window so that it may be viewed from outside, which is cool.

Too bad Bobby Van died so young, only a year into the show. The guy was spectacular. He was funny, very energetic, extremely warm and personable and... did I say energetic? I never knew this dude even existed but seeing these clips make me wonder how far he would have gone. The comedians, on the other hand... not very good. Even the ones who went on to become famous, they hardly give you a chuckle most of the time. Bobby Van was much funnier.

+Ron Hawk Honestly, I didn't know until the Ken Ober version in 1997 came out. Even the Rolling Stone magazine came out with this one statement review on the show, "Some may miss the show's original host Bobby Van, but Ken Ober is just fine." That was when I later found out that Bobby Van died of Brain Cancer around late July 1980. Heck, it was only his third game show and he was just getting warmed up. There was rumored that a third season was in the works but was shelved after Van's passing and the producer's unwillingness to replace him. (he was rather unreplacable) Despite all this, thanks for all you've given us after all these years Mr. Van. You really made all of us laugh 35 years later.

+meyerj75 I watched this show on USA a lot (and I specifically remember all the Unknown Comic jokes from this very episode), but didn't know about Bobby Van until I saw him in a really, really bad movie. For some reason it sparked my curiosity, and saw some clips of him doing song & dance stuff from "No No Nanette", "Good News" and "The Music Man", and he was really great in them & I started to wonder what happened to him, and learned of his tragic diagnosis. I was surprised to learn his widow ultimately married the legendary playwright Neil Simon, and I was shocked to realize he hosted "Make Me Laugh". I wish his wife would write a biography so I could learn more about his life.

It's probably a good thing the Unknown "Comic" kept a bag over his head! Would make it easier for him to find another line of work if the comedy career didn't work out (and it fizzled out shortly after this aired; Gong Show appearances could only get him so far).
