Jim, what a great concert! I bought the original Smithsonian VHS and they had Marc Johnson listed on bass. Obviously thats Dennis on bass. Is there a back story? Last minute sub?

I love the Mel Lewis Band, now the Vanguard Orchestra. What a cast here, but the solo by Dick Oatts who is beautiful. Dick is a player that has his roots in Sonny Stitt and Coltrane and yet he's come up with own voice. Loved Dick's sound on the Berg Larsen mpc, had great edge, depth... Incredible player.. And Joey Lovano when he played Otto Link mpc, my favorite sound of Joes....

Yeah, man. What an awesome band they were at that time. Looks like this was shot around the same time as the Montreaux recording where they did Mintzer's arrangements of Herbie Hancock. 1980 I think.

Bob Brookmeyer was a artist in residence at UMKC so he basically taught me how to play big band drums in 1987, how Mel approached it. We would be in the practice room, him yelling the chart out to me, where to set up and where to lay off.

Love the percussion intro, its just so unorthodox, its amazing. But then again, jazz is pretty much unorthodoxy in liquid form played through horns.

Bob Brookmeyer était Directeur artistique de l'orchestre, après la disparition de Thad Jones mais il ne participait pas à ce concert à Montreux en 1980, par contre le bon pianiste-arrangeur de l'orchestre était Jim Mc Nilly

@@bassman4632 Well Mr. Bass, if y'all don't understand French use Google translation! The cats just sayin': BB was the artistic director of the band after Thad Jones passed away (N.B. actually after he left t direct the Danish Natinal jazz orch…)but he wasn't with the band for this concert in Montreux (Switzerland where da MFs speak French…) . On the other hand, the pianist arr. of the band was Jim McNeeley(spelling couldda been better!) .
