I love how Mel integrated percussion into the whole ensemble. Great innovator! I played in jazz bands.

Bob Brookmeyer was a artist in residence at UMKC so he basically taught me how to play big band drums in 1987, how Mel approached it. We would be in the practice room, him yelling the chart out to me, where to set up and where to lay off.

Wow! What a bunch of young whippersnappers we were! Not a gray hair in the band! Saxes: Joe Lovano, Kenny Garrett, Dick Oatts, Gary Pribeck, Gary Smulyan. Trombones: Earl McIntyre, Douglas Purviance, John Mosca, Ed Neumeister. French Horn: Stephanie Fauber. Trumpets: Tom Harrell, Earl Gardner, Joe Mosello, John Marshall. Piano: Jim McNeely. Bass: Dennis Irwin. Drums: Mel Lewis

I love the Mel Lewis Band, now the Vanguard Orchestra. What a cast here, but the solo by Dick Oatts who is beautiful. Dick is a player that has his roots in Sonny Stitt and Coltrane and yet he's come up with own voice. Loved Dick's sound on the Berg Larsen mpc, had great edge, depth... Incredible player.. And Joey Lovano when he played Otto Link mpc, my favorite sound of Joes....

Yeah, man. What an awesome band they were at that time. Looks like this was shot around the same time as the Montreaux recording where they did Mintzer's arrangements of Herbie Hancock. 1980 I think.
