When I was 23, and a new transplant from the Upper Peninsula to South Florida, I went to a fancy Brazilian steakhouse with my soon-to-be husband. I never drank and was embarrassed that I didn’t know how to order any drinks by name at the bar, so I panicked and told the young bartender that I’d have a pink squirrel. She looked at me like I was nuts and asked an older bartender what it was. He looked at me and said, “Well now, I haven’t had anyone order that in a LONG time! Coming right up!” He seemed genuinely pleased to make it, and the Yooper in me was happy 🥰

My first ever drink was a grasshopper made by my great aunt Carole. I was 14. She was perfect Korean War era wife... and a badass Midwestern career woman, and an artful, meticulous seamstress besides. The kind of woman who took a bar of soap down to the lake for her bath. The kind of woman to clean your fish and cook em too. Thanks for bringing her to mind.

Dear Charlie, We were shocked and honestly lost sleep over your method of making a Brandy Alexander. We were born and raised in Wisconsin, but moved to Massachusetts and then Illinois. We learned never to order an Alexander out of Wisconsin, because they were always made with cream. In Wisconsin, we were raised on ice cream Alexanders, similar to Grasshoppers with ice cream. You also can't get a good Old Fashioned outside of Wisconsin, but that is another story. Please put ice cream in your Alexanders, so we can get a peaceful sleep.
@SighNaps
@SighNaps 2 жыл бұрын
"You also can't get a good Old Fashioned outside of Wisconsin" I can't speak for the cream drinks because I don't ever have them, but you can get a well made old fashioned in many places. They key isn't the location, it's the establishment. If you want a decent old fashioned you have to go to a place that knows how to mix a cocktail properly (basically excluding all beer bars, sports bars, dive bars etc.) Also, a brandy old fashioned is a bastardization. The only two acceptable spirits used in an old fashioned are bourbon or rye.

I used to bartend at High Cliff Supper Club in Sherwood. I made tons of ice cream drinks! I always dreaded when the first person would order one, because once everyone at the bar saw the ice cream and heard the blender going, they would flood me with orders for more. I usually had 3 blenders going; one for grasshoppers, one for pink squirrels, and one for brandy alexanders. I always dreaded when someone would order a "banana banshee" or "Sex on the Cliff" (which was Kahlua and Baileys), cause then I'd have to clean out one of the blenders!

we made Pink Squirrels with ice cream, when we were in college in the 1970s. This was in western Minnesota, though, so we obviously did things a little different. There was a place in Chokio, a very small town about 25 miles from campus, that ONLY made ice cream drinks, and we would frequently pile in someone's car and drive there. This is making me all nostalgic and all.

Da important ting is dat yer not from da California. Cali overtook da great dairy state o' Wisconsin in milk production years ago and us Wisconsinites have never forgotten. Like da Alamo. 😭😭😭 It's okay, just cuz dey make more don't mean it's better! 😁 Keep er movin dere in Virginia! 😁. UPDATE: Also, not to get unpleasantly political but we've got to support the farmers. If it's true Canadian farmers are better protected than in the U.S. because of milk price supports, then we should have that here. ☹️ Also, I'm seeing ads for dairy again. The "got milk" ad era should never have left. Too much market share lost to alternative mylks. Foolishly maybe, I thought dairy was still doing okay cuz of the demand for cheese and Greek yogurt.

I remember it was a big deal to go to the Supper Club for dinner on a Friday or Saturday night. My parents always splurged and Dad would have a whiskey seven and Mom would have a sloe gin sour and I would be allowed a Shirley Temple. 🤩

Christina Cope I’ve been noticing! In 1999 when I was 21 I started tending bar at a very well known jazz club that had a speakeasy vibe and very diverse clientele, lots of my customers LOVED to dabble in the drinks of Hemingway and earlier eras! It was UNIQUE and those skills have proven to be invaluable because I’m now a nurse but I do get called upon for survival occasions and people LOVE the themed party and making a drink menu tailored to the era and theme is FUN, it also limits how much crap you gotta buy and lug around!! It’s exciting to see a revival of bygone times because the past can be quite an adventure too!

Christina Cope right on!! It’s part chemist part therapist part marathon runner! I loved it, had we had health insurance I never would’ve left because I’ll tell ya, made a lot more money there than in my actual career with a masters degree and THREE bachelors 🤦🏻‍♀️ At 21 in 1999 I was pulling in, TAKE HOME, $88,000 CASH and I worked 30 hours per week. No prostitution either in case it seems suspicious.

I was in California at a cheese producer and they told me about their happy cows. They even went further and said that Wisconsin cows were "bitchy." As a Wisconsinite I was very offended. We drove by some pastures where there wasn't a green blade of grass in sight, no trees - just some water troughs with corrugated tin roofs and it essentially was a desert! I bet they don't show the reality in their advertisements. I still pisses me off when I think about it.

I've lived in both Wisconsin and California. To be honest I hated the taste of California dairy products. The milk tasted like milk flavored water, and the eggs tasted like sulphur. I saw some dairy farms out there and compared to Wisconsin cows, those poor things look like they're starving.

Moved out to San Francisco in 2004 and my wife and I would travel the 5 down to San Diego a few times a year, and before reaching the Bakersfield area, there would be a smell of death. The first time driving down, we couldn’t figure out where the smell was coming from, until the roadside hills flattened out, giving us a view of the area. It looked as if the land was moving. We pulled over to take a photo, as it was an unbelievable mass of cows, just roasting in the scorching valley heat. Like Bob said, there’s no trees or other forms of shelter for the cows to escape from the sun. In the valley it’s quite common for daily temperatures to hit 100° and go up to 115°.

Oh, man, this is awesome! Day before yesterday it suddenly popped into my head how much I would love to have a couple of Brandy Alexanders or maybe a grasshopper. I learned how to make these back in 1966 when I was working in a bar in Augusta, Georgia. I haven’t had one of these in literally decades. Creme de Noyeaux is almond flavored, and clear creme de cacao is used in grasshoppers. His technique wasn’t perfect, but I appreciate the homage. And we even had a few supper clubs there that operated illegally after hours. Somebody was getting paid off. Loved how he changed into the elegant bathroom to complement the rest of his outfit. Cool video.
