After watching this video, I fixed two of my bathroom fans in less than 10 minutes! One had dust buildup that prevented the fan motor to spin and the other fan had the electrical cord unplugged. Thanks for the video and tips! I was about to replace two units which would have cost me a day and a few hundred bucks!

Great video! It's worth mentioning that if the motor hums and doesn't run, it's worth it to take it out and vacuum and clean it out real well and try it again before buying a new one. Mine hummed and didn't turn and it was because the dust gunked it up. I vacuumed it out and it ran like new.

I bought a new cover to cover the same yellowed unit. Your video helped me realize that I could unscrew the washer, unplug the light which I don’t even know existed in the 16 years I’ve owned this home, and remove the grille to reveal the slots that the new fan cover springs slip into. I don’t have the functionality of the light but considering I never knew I had one, I won’t miss it; just happy to have the discolored plastic removed from my freshly painted white ceiling. Much appreciated!

I've taken the larger motors that we have in our fan units apart. They are easy to clean out with condensed air, replaced a worn washer, lubed the bearings with Fluid Film (amazing stuff!) and they are as good as new. Most people do not take the fan units down and clean out the dust, and they should.

We have an old NuTone heat-vent-light from the mid-60s that needs replacing. It used an exposed heating element that would fail by dripping hot metal onto the floor. I don't think I'd want to go back to that. Incandescent heat lamps don't catch your bathmat on fire when they burn out. The vent motor is also dead. The master bath has a similar model that doesn't have a vent because of the window, not that we'd want to open up the window even a crack on cold days. Both heating elements failed by raining down fire. I don't know what they were thinking when they thought that was a good idea.

Heaters on the ceiling sounds very inefficient, since heat rises
@robertgaines-tulsa
@robertgaines-tulsa 2 жыл бұрын
@@specialopsdave There are other things to consider like natural convection and radiative heat. The heat source doesn't have to be on the floor to indoor natural convection. Ceiling heaters aren't so much convective as they are radiative and forced air. It also uses far less energy to move air than it does to heat it. Radiative can also spread heat more quickly over larger distances especially if there is nothing blocking it. It heats the same way a ceiling light lights up a room.

Excellent video indeed and quite similar to the steps I’ve taken over the years to keep these ceiling fans in operation and avoid them becoming eyesores for the lint, dirt and other nastiness they attract. There is one thing homeowners should check before following your approach and that is to check where the fan’s exhaust vent terminates. In two of my bathrooms, the disappointing answer was through the ceilings into the unfinished attic. While this might be consistent with code, I’ve come to understand you need the exhaust to exit the structure not just the weather perimeter. Finally, a simple rotary timer rather thanks on/off switch likely is going to be useful for most people as these fans should be operated as soon as the shower water is turned on until at least 15 minutes after the water is turned off (subject to adjustment for unusual climates).

If you need to clean and degrease non-painted parts or painted parts that are going to be repainted you can just soak them in TSP (tri-sodium phosphate), which is sold in the paint department of hardware stores for about $10 per 1 LB box. You can use it all over the house/ garage on non-painted parts and TSP will even degrease and renew the filter and mesh of your kitchen vent hood that nobody ever cleans and just avoids looking under, hardware and all, no scrubbing needed.
