In this tutorial, I show you how to mix hip hop instrumentals when all you have is a pre-mixed beat. Sometimes when mixing your vocals to a 2-Track or Pre Mixed beat, the vocals don’t seem to sit nicely into the mix and end up sounding out of place and just simply “on top” of the beat. I will show you some common issues I find with pre mixed beats and some tricks for processing your instrumental to get the vocals to fit perfectly inside.

Hip hop beat mixing full length tutorail

any advice on managing the low end so it bangs on good speakers/subs, but doesn't distort a small bluetooth speaker to hell? I bought a trap metal type beat and it has a purposely distorted 808, which is cool and it sounds good on my monitors and, my 12 sub home theater system, and in my car, but I can't turn up the volume on a bluetooth speaker without it sounding like it's going to explode. I want to walk that fine line so I got a plugin called bassroom where you can give it a reference(s). I used Mercy by Kanye and folks, and A Milli by weezy on the parts that hit hard AF but don't go overboard. But it seems to take too much energy out of the song. I guess because they're completely different styles/frequency ranges.

I’m considering using vitamin on the last part of the 2 track beat like you did, but prior to seeing this video I only used it in the master bus. Is it overkill if I used it on the 2 track itself as well as the overall mixed song or is my way giving the track a similar feel to what your method does

@@cameobelafonte4975 Honestly man, if it sounds good, add it to both! There is no rule saying you cant use a plugin more than once. I love vitamin and I use it on many things. Just be sure you only use a plugin if you feel its needed, not just out of habit. Trust your ears and have fun!

I think this is the most under rated mix template out there. I got his template back in 2020 still using it for mixing today besides the fact i studied it to a T and learned from it so i switch some plugins up and ajusted it because ever song is different.

Hey just bought the template, would you recommend also adding on a plugin like trackspacer for the vocals to cut through the beat? Also a video on your thought process on the amount of reverb or effects to add to the vocals.

Whats up fam? The Pro Tools version comes with my full template using multiple 3rd party plugins but it ALSO includes a Waves Only version for users who only have Waves Plugins.

If you find its necesary. I only apply this processing when the 2-track mix isnt quite doing it for me. Theres not much you can do when you dont have the full control from all the individual audio tracks for the beat. If you are in the production phase and have access to the full mix, then I would approach the mix differently.

What’s the difference between putting the vitamin and imager on the music bus and putting it on the two track itself?

In this case, there isnt too much of a difference. If I were mixing with multiple stems or full instrumental track outs I would route them all to individual group buses, and then those would all feed into this main music bus. At that point is when Id usually apply vitamin or imaging so thats why its on the music bus and not the 2-track.

I do use StudioRack as well! I have a few really dope presets made for beat mixing with StudioRack but I find I like to take things a bit further than Waves plugins at times if needed.

I turn the beat down to -6 db but when i master it back up the low end bass and kick lose its punchyness and energy what am I missing?

Are you using any compression on your master bus? That can really affect the punchiness of the mix. If you bring the beat down -6 and then bring it back up 6db using a limiter you shouldn't really hear that difference, but if there is some processing happening before that, you could be affecting your punchy lowend.
