Make Your Own Plug Seed Planters!

I prefer seed raising methods that don't disturb the roots when it comes time to plant out the seedlings, so I decided to make my own reusable plug seed planters.
NOTE: There is evidence that PVC does leach chemicals over time, and some people advise against growing plants in PVC. Personally, on current evidence, I am not concerned about this due to the short duration that seedlings remain in these tubes. However if this is of concern to you, use CPVC (high temp PVC) or an alternative material that you believe is safer.

I used the inside carton roll of loo paper, made 4 equidistant cuts around an inch and folded those in to make a base. Filled them up with soil and placed them in plastic trays. Then sowed the seeds and when the plants were the right size, I planted the whole thing where i wanted them. Cheap and wuick

This is great! I did something very similar (pipe cut to length, glued together to form a cluster) however my approach to having a "base" was a little different to yours. I just used a perforated rigid seedling tray rather than creating individual bases for the tubes. This has the added benefit of supporting the weight when I move the seedlings about. Then I created a single base piece and screwed it onto some dowel for a handle. It looks a bit like a plunger. It works really well to push the seedlings out without disrupting the roots, and it avoids the fiddly bit of creating lots of bases (trying to flatten PVC, cutting to size, hot gluing, drilling holes, etc).

I save our toilet roll tubes and use those for beans and corn seed. Just have to make sure you bury the cardboard under the soil as they will wick the water upwards. Beryl in NZ

That's all you need, once. Adds carbon back to the soil as well. I currently have my first batch of corn growing in TP rolls ready for planting out in 2 or 3 weeks time. I will then do another batch. Beryl in NZ

@@Katiegwen777 I think he's fairly elevated but even when you're not directly affected by the flooding such extensive rain can cause all sorts of problems, everything from destroying crops, roads, damaging buildings. From his reply I am guessing he's going to show us some of the local flooding and damage, good news he's okay as this is one of my favourite KZfaq channels, theres not many people that willing to share such extensive knowledge.

John, go and buy yourself some yogurt in 6 oz cups. Eat the yogurt . Put holes in the bottom of the empty cups. You will save money and time as you grow your seedlings in the yogurt cups. Ray Delbury Sussex County N J USA

No, we save more money by making our own yogurt! Make these once, and they will last a long time.

Sounds like a good idea. What about when the roots grow through the bottom holes, you may compromise the roots trying to get them out I think it would be a better idea to put it on a flat surface. Definitely going to try with a deeper height. Thanks.

Cutting roots is like topping a plant as long as it’s at the ends it only increases the roots and won’t stress the plant…..some people actually put razor blades in their soil so they get cut as they grow

PVC is really not the material you want around your plants. The trays are made of HDPE for a reason
@homesteading
@homesteading Жыл бұрын
Yes PVC can leach and a HDPE version would better...but do you have evidence that there would be significant leaching in the short time period that seedlings would be there - 4-8 weeks?
