I have had the same idea and tried it. It all looks well, and you can actually start seeds this way with no problem. However, after some time your pump filter clogs up real back every other day, because the peat moss starts deteriorating. So I DO NOT recommend that!

Try wrapping panty hose or something around the base to prevent the peat or coco from leaking out overtime

@@dressedanddepressed2301 it your cloning u don't actually need nothing just ensure that the stem portion is in the water I just use tin foil for top with a hole for stem For seed I just start in sand that way easy to clean and comes out easy with out damaging roots

The aerogarden moss keeps its shape and doesn’t fall apart in the water. I brought coco coir mix by GROW!T that I got at a nursery near my house. One, I used a drill to break it apart so I didn’t have to use the entire block. It’s not easy to break apart with your hand or a knife. I used a 5/16 drill bit because it was already in my drill. Two, as I stuff the moss in to shape it, I really doesn’t seem like it’s going to stay together once I stick it in the water. Maybe if it sits out for a few days first. I imagine aerogarden didn’t have people compress their moss by hand so idk if these will hold without some type of compressor. We shall find out.

This is so dumb. I can't believed i watch this whole video. Plugs use a glue! Doing this will just fall apart. People do it for seed starting, but it's ridiculous for hydro. It will just be disgusting. Will ruin your pump and sprayers. I watched the whole video trying to find out what kind of glue is used for root riot type plugs. Waste of time.

I agree with you, and the same goes for me. I watched the entire video, trying to find out which glue he used or what the mixing ratio of the glue and cocopeat is. Do you know the ratio??

@@RandomAlias1 Kind of depends what materials you have on hand & how hard you can get it right & compressed. Some people use cococoir or peet & other types of material. I haven't been using it for awhile but once I get set back up again I will try other materials. If completely soaked It can see some slothing off. If just moist can stay together. If you find other material let me know.

Great idea! I just bought a hydroponic garden (from Aldi) and it didn't come with the pods. I'm a little leery of trying this because I'm afraid it will eventually clog the pump. How about putting it in some netting? Maybe old pantyhose? something like that? what do you think?

Is there any danger of the peat moss plug falling apart when in the aerogarden and clogging up the pump? Is hand-compressing the plug enough for it to maintain shape in liquid?
@DiyRick66
@DiyRick66 3 жыл бұрын
I never experienced any issues. Keep in mind the plug becomes damp not dripping soaking wet so it falls apart since it is compressed tight. 🤞
@rafaelx.418

Sorry, but this does not work, even if it holds form, the bond is very weak and peat particles will wash into the tank. I tried to compress peat pulp in the vice to achieve similar cellular bond as in the paper making, but the produced shape still quickly fell apart in the water. Had small success with mixing in flour in approx ratio 5 peat : 1 flour for bonding, made dough and baked them at 350F/175C, that also sterilized the peat which you should do anyway for indoor growing because it has pathogens, pollutants and insect eggs from harvesting site. Mine were denser than originals. Btw. peat is a cellulose and fabricating cellulose sponges is an involved chemical process, do not expect to make anything close to originals at home.

No THEY DO NOT hold together so don’t be fooled. The professional coir plugs are mixed with adhesive polymers to stick them together. Do not waste your time doing this or even watching it. They will fall apart and turn to sludge and block your system.
