This is totally something I would do! Actually it's happened twice that I needed a specific print and couldn't find it. In those cases I made a stamp from Dollar Tree craft foam (the stuff for kids crafts, not for floral arrangements) and stamped the design on on using standard acrylic craft paint with a little water added. I set the paint using a hot iron and a hot dryer and then tested the colorfastness in a wash cycle before using it. It's been almost 10 years and the paint has definitely faded but hasn't washed out completely. For something that won't be washed frequently it would be fine.

Sew cute. Thanks for another terrific idea. I’m sure your daughter will treasure that block in particular as it is so personalized. My grandmother made me a patchwork quilt about 40 years ago, and my favorite blocks are a fabric print with tiny white sheep on a yellow background. Thanks for prompting those memories to come flooding back.

After moving from England to India my fabric options have greatly reduced. Not that there isn't an enormous amount of fabric options in India. There is but just not in my neck of the woods because I live in a small town in the hills 😬 This is such a great idea and option for those that, for whatever reason have less options. It's also a great alternative for those that are on a tight budget.

@@AnitaSouthall sunprinting is when you paint onto paper or fabric using watered down acrylic paint or permanent ink and then put flat objects like Lear’s down on the surface. Lay the project out in hot sun- as the fabric dries the pigment under the leaves is wicked out, leaving a negative image. Hard to explain, but easy to do. I learned from KZfaq videos

Dear Cathy, I’m a long time subscriber (almost from your first video) and I’m just now watching this episode. Your frog material is beyond cute! Absolutely love it! The paint markers are pretty cool BUT have you ever heard of or used Derwent Inktense pencils? I recently purchased a 72 set and I’m loving them immensely. I truly can’t recommend them strongly enough - no bleeding, permanent ink that is transparent and you can add colors, one atop the other endlessly. I’m so glad I got to see this. I’ve been a little nervous to do “real painting” with them. Your prep is very helpful & taken some of the fear away. (Like you, I’m a perfectionist) I always learn something new watching you so thank you very much!

Andrea, sorry for the late reply! Thanks for being with me here on YT and for subscribing--I'm always thankful for the community of viewers on this channel! No, I haven't ever used Derwent Inktense pencils, but I will have to give them a try! 🤓🤩 It is tricky to use pens on fabric, especially trying to factor in bleeding and needing them to be truly permanent! I'll have to give it a go---maybe they'll show up in an upcoming video if they work really well! 😊

So innovative!!! A few questions - 1) Do you pre wash the fabric before drawing on it? I worry that if I use brand new fabric yardage (as opposed to thrift store finds) the factory chemicals would affect the ink, but I don't generally pre wash other quilt fabric, especially not pre cuts. So I am nervous that the different fabrics would shrink differently. You have so much more experience than me, any thoughts on different fabric shrinkage in the final quilt top? 2) For a 4" square that you did, about how long did it take? I imagine that doing this method over a large piece of fabric could take forever, but this might be perfect for a quilt border I have been struggling with. Still I don't want to bite off more than I can chew! Any advice for larger sections of designs? 3) The pens - it looks like Faber Castell PITT pens use India Ink, which is a pigmented ink (I think that means lots of little bits of pigment). The pens aren't specifically marketed for fabric but from what I can tell, India Ink "stains" are very hard to get out of cotton after it's dried, and especially if it's been heat-set/washed/dried. I *have* heard of Micron pens, which are both pigmented and archival. Some quilters swear by them for writing on quilts, and some quilters hate them. Have you ever tried Sakura Micron pens for drawing on fabric? Cathy you are so talented and creative and I have been saving literally every single one of your videos from the last few weeks for reference later!! 🥳

Ok. Time for answers to your questions...to the best of my knowledge, experience...and ability! 1) I had washed the white shirt fabrics because they came from the thrift store and I generally wash them before taking them apart. I don't prewash the quilting cottons that I use (ever) and even quilting with them and pre-washed dress shirt fabric, I have never had a problem with fabrics shrinking, much less at different rates. Also, because I used these pens on shirt fabric, not quilting cotton, I cannot say what the ink will or won't do on them. My best advice would be to just try it (perhaps on scrap fabric, or make a small tester quilt--like a mug rug or large coaster--and see how it washes up. 2) So I actually did my pattern on 9" square fabric and then sewed and cut it to make my 4" HST's, so from the get-go the pattern wasn't on a very small piece of fabric. I truly have no idea how long it took me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Coming up with the pattern, doing it on a practice piece of fabric, refining the design, etc. took the longest amount of time (maybe as much as an evening?) but I don't remember actually doing the final print taking all that long. And honestly, I think it would be completely dependent on how fast you work---which I couldn't even begin to predict. 3) I don't have any knowledge of pigmented pens or staining (AT ALL!) but I have used Micron pens...I don't love them, but maybe it's because I only have fine point pens which, to me, are not enjoyable to use for design work on fabric. I don't even really like writing with them, but I do use them for quilt tags. The brush/marker component was what drew me to the Faber Castell PITT pens and what I enjoyed about using them. Hope that answered your questions! I think when it comes down to it, you're just gonna have to try it for yourself and see! ❤️

So, if you have a nice printer (which I don't anymore, because my husband apparently was unaware that we ever used the printer for anything artistic), would some sort of printer transfer paper work. That was you could work longer on your patterns before using any fabric. And you could keep the original design if you ever needed the same print again you would have it exactly the same.

I'm so glad I found your KZfaq channel! I cannot wait to do this! One question: What was the black marker that you used, please? I love the way it works and obviously it's not a brush tip! Can't wait to purchase these pins!

Oh yay!! 🥰 I used a Pigma Micron 05 (archival ink pen.) It worked like a charm! 🤓👍🏻

Thanks Kathy, did you try Fabric Pens? I’m doing a project using fabric pens. Thanks for sharing your creativity! Love it 🐸

AG, I didn’t because in my experience with fabric pens, the color selection isn’t great and sometimes they leave the fabric feeling crusty. But they would absolutely work if you can find good ones in a color you like! Great question! ❤️

I did! I’m not sure it’s needed but I thought I’d do it to be on the safe side! Thank you! 🥰

I just started quilting a year ago and have really enjoyed your videos! In my current project, (my second quilt) I’m adding borders to a finished quilt top. I’m realizing that an important fabric within my design is a little too light; on the bed, it blends into the background. I’m wondering if I could slightly intensify that fabric, either with a pen, with inktense pencils, or with a brighter thread when I eventually quilt it. How would you pump up the volume on a fabric that wasn’t bright enough (or would you forgive it as part of the learning process?)

I haven't ever tried really any of those techniques (although I can attest to the fabric markers!) and my first thought was "forgive it" BUT I also think you could totally make changes if it will make you happier with your quilt. I think the question you have to ask yourself is "If I color this fabric with a pen or inktense pencils, will I like it better than what I have now?" If you think you might like it less than now (or if you think you will "mess it up" by coloring over the existing fabric), then leave it alone and/or experiment with the quilting (which you can always take out if you don't like it!)

I think I’m going to fiddle with it a little on a scrap of fabric and a sample block that I have left over. If I can subtilely intensify the background color a little, I think I’ll like it better. And if the scrap doesn’t look right or the block washes weirdly, I can leave it alone.

I wonder if you iron it when it’s mostly dry it would hurry it along? Because I am impatient. I will experiment with this and report back. I love watching you

Hey JennJenn! Maybe experiment with a hairdryer. We use it in my watercolor painting group when we are in a hurry to add more color.

Do you think the ink could be dried quicker with an iron? Or is that a bad idea?
@TheCatBirdQuilts
@TheCatBirdQuilts 2 жыл бұрын
I did hit mine with an iron, but I had to iron it more than once due to the HST (original press) then sewing the HST’s into each row. (2nd press) and then sewing rows together in final block (3rd press.) so if it’s a bad idea, then my daughter’s final quilt might show it! 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

But in all honesty, mine had prob dried before I ironed it! I’d say try in on scrap fabric (both ways) and see what you think! 😘
