step up your game, desolder some of the usb ports to make it slimmer, you can directly solder the 2g module to the pins in the desoldered usb port, directly soldering the screen would also reduce greatly the size of that thing

I've got an idea. Since it is a proper pi, it can also be used as a desktop computer (to some extent). What if you could slide this phone into a DIY pi laptop sort of device and turn your phone into a proper computer. Alternatively, you could just plug in a display, keyboard and a mouse in order to turn it into a desktop computer. Either way, this certainly has a lot of potential.

I'd like to do a project like this with the raspberry pi CM4 and a 4g module. Does anyone have any advice? Also, I'd like to have some faster storage on phone. I've seen how you can boot from usb and maybe even a nvme drive. I'm worried about cooling for an nvme drive and the pi itself. Battery life is also a concern of mine. I was considering booting over a usb drive over a sd card because I've heard they're faster and I don't think cooling the storage would be a concern with a usb drive.

I want you to, is 'gapps' working because android means nothing to me unless I can get in the google play store or have some way to get apk's on the board. I tried emetria and something else I think I was having a PSU issue. Any way , where can I find a working image with google play or a way to install apks. Android never plays nice with my hardware for some reason even today I tried booting an x86 64 version in a vm to try it out. I just recently came across this pretty cool older asus netbook. and I ran it live and tried with a full install and it was sitting on a black screen with a blinking cursor for an hour before I was sick of trying. I bought the 3b+ thinking everything that worked on the 3b would work , I was sadly mistaken. I upped the USB output and stuck diet pi on a flashdrive, made a self deleting ramdisk , and customized it to my liking. I manually installed a bunch of software( not from the launcher), the system is pretty optimal, for me. I still want an android os though so please post it, thanks.

it definitely needs to be thinner. my suggestion: find a riser ribbon or make one, for the pins. like the electrical tape you used, insulate the arduino board on the back and connect the touchscreen to the board, except on the other side. finally, find some smaller switches. the whole phone should be no thicker than the width of the USB ports. in fact, you can find some pretty thin cases for the board nowadays, in which case, all you need to do is secure the touchscreen to the back of one and feed the riser ribbon from the screen to the Pi. then a very slim plastic cover (2mm thick) goes over the touchscreen to protect it. Check out cases by SODIAL. should cut your thickness down to 23mm at its thickest. That was a number difficult to find, but should work out as such: 18mm for the Pi and it's case, 3mm for the screen, 2 mm for the screen protector.

Sorry for nitpicking, but right at the beginning you made a mistake, (sort of) A USB can be hooked up to your mobile phone, however you just need an adapter cable. My phone is Android and when I tried this, the phone definitely detected it! Sadly though, I couldn't open the files from the USB. This may simply be due to the file format perhaps, OR it detected the space, but needed an app to access the files on the USB.(?) But my point is that if it detects the USB space, that space is usable by the Phone! Peace. :D

There are a large variety of screens and unique controllers for which someone would need to write drivers. While you can buy most OEM screens, you'll find the documentation for them is pretty sparse, or nonexistent, because this is proprietary hardware. You're better off with the well documented screens with SPI interfaces or miniature displays with HDMI.

Hey, great video per usual! I just had a few questions pertaining to the build.. 1.) How long did the total build take in real time? 2.) Where did you source the parts? 3.) What was the price for the PiPhone (all parts & components) around time of build?
