Make your own Shard Light

In this video I will show you how to build a really awesome shard light.
To create this shard light you'll need the following materials.

An LED light strip:
amzn.to/2j3E6LU
A piece of 12mm thick MDF
A 12x12 cm square of 1mm thick hardwood
A sheet of veneer
Two pieces of plexiglass
A 12v DC adapter,
two short pieces of wire,
and a decent length of thin two core wire (a cable from an old set of headphones is perfect for this).
You'll also need the following tools...
A fine toothed saw,
a fine knife,
a metal ruler, a pencil, and a right-angle ruler
a clamp,
some wood glue and a brush to apply it with, and also some silicon based glue though a glue gun will also be suitable.
You'll also need a soldering iron and solder,
Wire strippers and some scissors,
A drill with a small bit,
And lastly some finishing oil.

There's a whole line of Evo-Stik "STICKS LIKE SH*T" adhesives. They're all strong binders, weatherproof, and an awkward ordeal to scrub off your hands. They need some time to fully cure. Can accelerate and harden dry with baking soda, but it won't look pretty. All solvents capable of breaking down this adhesive will also destroy transparent plastics.

I think it's amazing that an accidental miscutting of plexiglass resulted in this cool light. If you just think about that for a moment, there is tons of potential for art in accidents... Something to consider whenever doing this kind of work. :)

to make the light softer or dimmer, you might try using resistors on the voltage source. (12v seems high for 3 LED's) 5- 6v is nice. if 12v, try a 22 ohm, 33, or 50 on one side of the power source for desired brightness. I like to sand the shard edges flat to diffuse the light. Nice vid... +1

to add to this, of you're artistically talented, you can scratch a pattern into the shards beforehand to have them emitting light in that manner. When I built something like this, (thanks for the tutorial, helped me immensely) I scratched a futuristic circuit board looking pattern into the shards to have it look like some kind of storage crystal, and it looks fucking sweet on my table.

Phenomenal tutorial, thank you. The biggest problem we had was finding a way to keep the perspex held straight while gluing it in place. We ended up resting it on books, but we never got it exactly right, and it really makes a difference to the final product.

I ordered a couple of rolls of LED strip lighting a few months back for $15 each on ebay and this stuff is AMAZING. I use it everywhere now. I just take an old 9 - 12 volt wall adapter and wire it up anywhere I need light. Like above my keyboard tray. Or under my desk. Or a closet. Or a book shelf. Or my car. Or... well you get the point. ITS AMAZING! I actually saw a roll of it in a woodcraft store the other day for $119.00 It was the EXACT same stuff I ordered for $15.

I've used Plexiglas as a target for my BB gun before, found that it makes some interesting patterns, I'm gonna try this with a shard that has be shot full of holes. :P

You could also try sanding the shard with 1200 grain sand paper until the shard is completely milk white. That makes the flat sides light up as well, not just the edges. It all depends on what effect you are going for ofc. =)

You can line metal foil along the hidden edges, direct more light through the plastic substrate. Take care to not short circuit paths with conductive metal, lol.

Great build video for a unique and interesting project. Your description is very precise and the instructions are very clear and easy to follow. I love that you've recycled the broken plexi for another project as this. I will definitely build something similar but will add an on/off switch to mine and some felt pads or cork on bottom to protect the furniture. Looking forward to your next video. You can also make the base out of a solid piece of wood, hollowing it out with a drill and a chisel. Requires more work but it's easier to get a nice finish.

Suggestion, instead of using all those different bits of wood for the base, try a solid piece of wood, drill into it the right depth multiple times, and then proceed to chisel out the excess

If you're going to be soldering, you should go ahead and use shrink tubing and solder the power supply leads. Electrical tape comes off and becomes sticky over time. If you don't stagger the leads to begin with it could be a fire hazard when it slips off. This is a simple and fun project.

If you just cut it a bit larger you can hit it with a trim flush bit on your router and it's a perfect edge. I will definitely be making this, I 'm a light junkie. For some reason I seem to make every diy I come across that has to do with lighting, especially led.

How to do it simply: Go to your friend's car and break his windshield. Take two glass shards and give them a round edge so nothing gets cut, other than your friend. Take a coaster and cut two slots that the rounded glass shards fit in. Flip the coaster upside down and put some LED lights that are facing the holes you made. Take the two glass shards and shove them into the holes. Scratch them with some metal scrubbers or sandpaper to have a little touch of art. Superglue the glass inside the holes and superglue the LEDs to the bottom of the coaster. Superglue the bottom of the glass shard to give it extra stability. Enjoy your art that you spent hours making and cutting yourself with. And the 20 minutes of time it took you to read this comment, take all the stuff to make this and do it. матегiаιs: Glass shards x2 Oval coaster or wooden stand LED lights Sander Sandpaper Hot glue or super glue Batteries for the LED lights Optional Items: Sharpie marker to outline the glass shards Colored tape to decorate Funny stickers to decorate even more

Nice build, If you wanted to get a nice clean finish on the shards and remove the scratches (depending how deep they are) you could alway wet sand the pieces with fine grit paper (2000 grit or higher) and then use polishing compound for a clean finish.

Simple to make. It does however look a lot more aesthetically pleasing as well as more 'salable' if you route a recess in the base of a solid piece of wood such as oak.

what is the problem? DIY means "Do it yourself" and his instructions are awesome. Of course you have to buy some materials. Otherwise every DIY project has to be made of paper and scissors. That would be ridiculous. The materials are cheap and the instruction steps are easy.

Naxarine If you use a solid block of wood, where are you planning on putting the LEDs? Also, how many people do you think have workshops? Doing it 'in the kitchen' opens up the project to all.

it also opens it up to someone slicing their hand open because they are trying to use a kitchen knife in place of a utility blade. you put yourself at more risk of harm when you use other tools instead of the proper ones. i cant believe you couldn't spare 2-4 dollars for a disposable xacto knife for the video and warn against dumb stuff like that. a drill bit or a cheap set of chisels is infinitely better then the damn steak knife like your using, neither of which require a wood shop.

This is just my preference, but you could also take some large grain sand paper to the glass to ass some grooves and gouges for more light to be caught. You could be sporadic, horizontal or parallel to the base depending on makers preference.

depends on the actual LEDs he used, but usually the ones mounted on Strips are pretty low power and the cooling provided by there PCB is enough :)

Mirock's Woodshop Glass is already a bad conduter of heat, it will not get hot because it radiate the heat before it get hot cause radiating surface area is much bigger that bottom heating area.

Any hardware store sells all this stuff. Except maybe the plexi plastics. You might be able to buy scraps/cutoffs from local workshops. And the LED strips. Which can be purchased cheap from a thousand stores online. You might be able to salvage materials from cheap thrift store junk, if you're lucky.
