Hey I just wanted to say that I really just started watching two videos from you and I decided to subscribe because (1) you seem to be original, you are not copying anyone's style, which I appreciate, and (2) because your content is very helpful and entertaining. So thank you for making these videos.

Thanks for the great walkthrough! I've watched several videos that talked about the theory or specific equipment or settings, but none of them made me feel like I really understood how to do it myself. By hearing your reason for choosing the things you did, seeing everything take shape step by step, and seeing exactly how to do it, I feel much more confident about being able to start my own setup. Thanks!

Color correction is getting all the colors to an accurate state. Color grading is then adding the specific style.

Hey! I'm a freelance gaffer (set lighting technician) and just wanted to chime in with my perspective. Its an unfortunately common mistake to place a fill light on the opposite side of the key light. The problem is that you create double shadows. Every light casts its own shadows and when the lights are coming from opposite directions those shadows will cross and look quite unnatural. It also produces double catchlights in the eyes which can look weird. Additionally, using small LED panels this without softening them tends to not look very flattering. Using a softbox or some diffusion gel on a roll or even a white t shirt placed in front of the light to spread it out will give a much softer graduation from highlight to shadow. If you make your key light large enough and positioned correctly, you usually don't have to use add a fill light. In fact I frequently will take light AWAY from the fill side with "negative fill" Which is basically just any black material to absorb light. I have a couple examples on my channel showing this principle if you want to check them out :)
@northwiebesick7136
@northwiebesick7136 3 жыл бұрын
Everything you say is true, although I don't know much about lighting, but you have to admit that the change he makes with just those few things, is way better looking than the before shot, considering...
@northwiebesick7136
@northwiebesick7136 3 жыл бұрын
For some reason editing my comment didn't want to work, so I'll ask about those examples you mentioned in this comment instead... Would be nice to see a more "show" video, versus this "tell" video... Also, I know 1 or 2 guys in KZfaq don't use any lights at all because the back of their desks and shelves have RGB strips on them, plus a little rgb behind them on a few nanoleaf pieces, and I was wondering if something like that could be used effectively, either standalone, or with studio lights or whatever you would use, to perhaps save on costs a bit but still have good camera visuals???
@playingwithlight7276
@playingwithlight7276 3 жыл бұрын
@@northwiebesick7136 sure, it definitely looks better than before, but I think it could easily look even 10x better with some small adjustments like I mentioned. Regarding your question about not using lights in favor of RGB strips....definitely wouldn’t recommend that. Lights in the background simply aren’t coming from the proper direction to light up the face, and certainly not in a flattering way, unless you want to be completely silhouetted. And even if they did reach your face, you DEFINITELY wouldn’t want harsh cheap saturated RGB lights lighting you up. It would look terrible. Tungsten/incandescent lights are very inexpensive and by their nature are so much more color accurate than cheap LED panels. An Arri 650w open face can be had for under $150. Bounce it into a white wall or ceiling or piece of white foam core from an arts and crafts store and you’ll have a beautiful soft key light and no need for a fill.

Question, what lighting to use when you have a green screen behind your chair. Probably less than 2 feet from my chair. I see bad shadows and the green background when I use OBS or Xsplitcam. Any suggestions?
@playingwithlight7276
@playingwithlight7276 3 жыл бұрын
@@elainaamoranto9626 the best thing you can do for yourself is get more distance between the subject and the green screen. The closer you are to the background, the more defined the shadows will be and the more green light will spill onto the subject, making the keying process that much more difficult. Ideally, you want enough space so that you can light the green completely separately from the subject to ensure a consistent, even spread of light.

Thanks for this, I didn't know that OBS had LUT support. Super useful. I saw one other person mention it, but I think the main thing I didn't see that would have been helpful was just to have some powder on hand to tamp down some of the skin highlights. It was reading a little too hot. I appreciate the tips.
