The ball thingy you mention that the new plant grows from is called a tuber. Another way to propagate chain of Hearts is to plant the string where one of the small tubers occurs, Severing after a period of time when new growth is evident. That tuber will eventually grow quite large as the plant matures. The way you are propagating will give several new plants. I do like the way in which you propagate the string of hearts and will have to give this a go. Thank you.

The round things are called caudicies (singular caudex). Succulents that have them are called caudiciforms. They're are lots of them but they're not all related, many families have a few, even families that are not mostly succulents or mostly succulents but not caudiciforms. Some people specialize in collecting caudiciforms. Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii is the commonest member of a large and variable genus, not all of them caudiciforms. It belongs to the family Apocynaceae (the Asclepiadaceae has been lumped into this). This is a large family with some very interesting members: Adenium (desert rose), Hoya, Pachypodium (Madagascan palm), Plumeria (frangipani) and a load of stapeliads (carrion flowers). SOH caudicies can be used as grafting stock for stapeliads.

I realize this comment is dated but I wanted to answer for anyone who happens to be wondering the same thing you asked. I bought mine from a small local plant store. I was told when the leaves closest to the soil are easily bent when gently pinched to water it then from the bottom (they're typically stiff due to water retention)They told me it's prone to rot if you water from the top.

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing this method of propagating SOH. I watched your informative video and propagated mine in August 2020. Today, it has grown so much and it's even got 2 tubers in the moss! They were exposed to direct sun daily for about 6 hours, and I have to drench the moss every day because they dry so fast. Thankfully, they were used to the sun and were thriving in the moss. I have moved them, moss and all, into a pot with potting mix. :) Thank you again!

You can treat the mold with a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution. Mold is very common when germinating cacti. I’m sure it’ll work with the propagations

I can't wait to try this!! Quick question - do you put the lid on the tupperware container with the moss and cuttings, or do you leave it out without the lid?

Thanks so much!! Very helpful. In the beginning of the summer, I divided an very old and larger plant into three smaller ones, and decided to try some stem and leaf cuttings with some of the broken pieces. I’ve got them in vermiculite. The leaves either have little roots, or are forming tubers. The stems, which I left long, are rooting where the leaves are. I’m so tempted to pot them up but it’s only been about a month. I wish I’d put them in regular soil mixed 50/50 with vermiculite. One of my tips with these plants is to grown them in either small or shallow pots that will dry out faster than bigger pots. I’ve had better success in clay pots with this plant. Too much wet soggy soil around their roots/tubers is not good. I also think to let them dry out between watering is best, and won’t kill them. Mine grow great under a skylight. I’d love to see them in their natural, habitat, I hear that the stems grow down to the ground and form huge mats.
My TOP TIPS for happy + full "string of" plants!
