WOW most people don't get it.... he built it because it's bad ass. would oil be nice sure, is it a must have, No. he used his brain and made somthing different and 90% of the comments are complaining about oil. WOW I say nice build and great imagination!
@kedwa30
@kedwa30 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly! On his website he explains it is only an experiment to see if the angle grinder can handle the load. He showed in the video he lubed the chain before assembly and we can presume he oiled it again as needed since it obviously didn't break off and maim him. It would be possible to refine the design into a finished product, but this video was never meant to showcase one.

IF only they made electric chainsaws....hmmmI can't imagine the chain staying sharp with no lube, and the fact that it doesn't have a chain brake is ASKING to get your fucking head split open via kick back. But it was fun to watch it come together.

The Makita 5012B is an electric chainsaw that runs at a similar speed and it uses a hand pump oiler that is meant to use very light weight bar oil, not the regular bar oil. Unfortunately, WD-40 is not a very good lubricant, nor does it have the additive to make it stick to the bar. Maybe the tip could be dipped in light bar oil periodically? I love the craftsmanship and resourcefulness shown here.

That's pretty wild. Obviously done just to see if it could be done and not to encourage folks to run out and modify their angle grinder instead of using an actual chainsaw. Some of these commenters are too bunged up over what is just a simple exercise in possibility. It was interesting and entertaining enough to make me subscribe and I'm not a tool nut, so....well done.

Yep, camera work was great for the presentation of these videos to the viewer! I do love the concept of finding other uses for tools; and in this case, the angle grinder, (being a great base tool that one can get relatively cheaply, ) is put into the hands of someone who has welding knowledge and thinking outside of the box knowledge. That you created an extension of what is possible to get a job done, (given that current gas chainsaws will usually just f-ingSuck down the road), the option to show what can be done with things that a tinkerer has in his/her garage and collection is admirable. Indeed, some of the specifics that others brought up about rpm, and cooling are very relevant, but i think the impact of positive for this video can't be overstated. Any viewer needs to realize that creative expression that yields this output, has what i call the, " timeline of formal modification" :If you're paying attention and are not a kneejerk commenter, all projects undergo those phases necessary to make it a proper tool.

Good point. Chain saws typically have an automatic oiler. In the case of a hack, it is sufficient to manually oil the chain religiously, and it is important not to forget.

Okay.... It's great "little" project if you have the following A spare heavy duty angle grinder A spare chainsaw bar, sprocket and chain A full metal cutting shaping and welding rig set up The necessary skills and experience But here are the downsides:- No oil feed... get ready to buy chains regularly No brake... I don't want to be the guy that shouts "SAFETY"... but there... I just did You can get a perfectly adequate electric saw for around $50... BUT I guess that isn't the point of the video The construction of the mechanism is very good and even though it's too heavy and unwieldly and questionable on safety grounds I do have respect for your "extreme" skills on this You deserve a sub and I thank you for making it and putting it out there

hey check out this quick hack that you need an exact size piece of pipe an exact size piece of steel plate, an exact size of bolt... but wait you also need a drill press with an expensive cutting bit at the exact diameter and you will need a steel chop saw with a expensive blade... and also a welder with all appropriate ppe unless you'd like to be blind, you also need a large piece of cylindrical steel to bend the guard and a angle grinder... but guess what anyone can do with quick hack because magic!

The main location that will wear extremely on a chain saw is the end of the bar! No proper lube and it will wear away and the chain will become loose and could fly off! As for WD40, it is best used as starter fluid for a 2 stroke/cycle engine! A few shots and that Chainsaw would have started right up! Polaris used to recommend it in their service manual for 2 stroke/cycle jet skis! So my opinion, WD40 would have alleviated the entire situation saving you of all that labor, just pluck off the air filter cover and remove the foam add a few squirts! Another maintenance tip, if you have a foam filter, clean it well with soap and water, let dry and soak with 2 stroke/cycle oil, squeeze excess from filter and reinstall filter in saw "Same on push mowers, clean, dry, soak in oil squeeze out excess and reinstall"! Then when you try to start it the next time it will run like new and will take far less pulls to get it running! In a world where it takes tons of coal to either power a foundry or supply the heat as well as carbon, it is better to reduce the amount of wasted steel and other metals! That coal puts toxins as well as green house gasses into the atmosphere which does affect the environment as well as animals and humans by exposure to mercury, lead and other toxic substances found in coal naturally that cannot be removed! Lets see you turn a razor electric scooter into a powered kayak that is reusable with steering!

A: no oiling of the bar B: no safty stop also the chain is spinning WAY TO FAST, angle grinders spin way faster than a chain saw.

should make a stump grinder market it and make millions. people are paying 6k for a little dosko stump grinder. and up to 40k for a vermeer stump grinder. I would think of using your same method . two strong chains , sprocket , a thick disk with sharp teeth to remove layers from the stump and a guard to block and flying pieces . would work wonders for annoying roots and hard to reach places where a conventional grinder wouldn't fit. would love to see what you would come up with. you have more than enough skill and smarts. thank you. a reply would be nice to know you actually read it :)

Why does a dog lick its balls? Because he can. Why did he do this grinder hack? Because he can. Sure, he could have bought an electric chain saw with an oiler and safety features for about $100. But where's the fun in that?

That's pretty dangerous. the chain blade as only designed to rotate a certain rpm. a grinder spins 5x faster then a chain saw. The chain can become stressed and eventually have a structural fail. I went to school with a kid who got a chain saw chain stuck in his head. the chain came off the bar and whipped him in the head. 20 plastic surgeons later he still doesn't look much better.
@doug112244
@doug112244 7 жыл бұрын
Actually they are not that different in rpm. My Husqvarna ran about 9000 rpm, many will turn faster. Most angle grinders run about 14,000 rpm. Huskies also have 6, 7 or 8 tooth sprockets. I didn't see how many teeth this one had.

And now you have a chainsaw with NO OIL FEED, and no brake! Good luck with that. You'll burn up the chain in about the same time it would have taken you to cut those branches with a hand saw. Oh.. and electric chainsaws are only $50 online.

Not necessarily. new carb gaskets require a trip to the store. And you can chase your tail for quite awhile after putting new gaskets in those walbro carbs trying to get everything adjusted.
@RJM1011

LOL ! What crap my chainsaw dealer can get any saw fixed in less than a week. Some little skill went into this but the cost and time was not worth it also it had NO chain oil or brake and nothing to stop the chain coming off into your leg. If you took this to a place of work you would be told to fuck off down the road.
@jaceschlechter7941

+moncorp1 If you know what your doing, it's very easy. You can order the parts online, or call the nearest small engine shop for the carb gasket sets which have maybe 8 or so gaskets in them. You just match the diaphragms and put them in the way they came out. Lots of the time the carb just needs a good cleaning and adjustment. But if they sat for awhile without fuel in them, the diaphragms dry up and get very brittle and hard. It pisses me off how you need to order the special type of tools for adjusting these newer 2 cycle carburetors. It's alot cheaper fixing them yourself than bringing them to mechanics and thats for sure. Most of the time they tell you that its not worth their time. I've fixed hundreds of these small 2 cycle carburetors. Very easy working on, but it could be challenging to someone who's never worked on them before. I also have alot of spares sitting around so I get a lot of easy, cheap parts lol. :)

Jace Schlechter ~ we were talking about TIME. You shot that out of the water when you started talking about ordering online. Even a trip to the store takes time. That was the point. And yes, I've fixed plenty of them.
