You struck out on this one GT. This knife is not for bushcraft, it is for trade. I am a miner and in our sites we need a knife that is under 4 inches by regulation, and since we cut rope, vinyl, rubber, open crates, pry staples, etc and don't need to whittle wood, a 1/8th inch thick spine with a 3.6 inch blade is the hero at the camp. In fact, I personally purchased one for all of my employees because I believe and they confirmed that this is the absolute best knife we have used in our industry in many years. Many of my employees went on to purchase more in case they lose it which is common in mining. The 511 won't last long here. We need to be mindful that tools are made for different situations and we cannot group them all in the same camp. That would make my wife's WUSTHOF knives useless for bushcraft and they are a hell of a lot more expensive than that Mora. But hey, they aren't designed for that anyway, are they?

Must remember that Mora was a work knife in Sweden and elsewhere before bushcrafters adopted them so not all their knives are intended for bushcraft tasks and the grips that go along with them.

The Mora Robust is mainly made for carpenters. Just so you know, and it may explain some of the things you didn't like. Hope you like the comment. :)

The Mora Pro Robust makes sense if you check the manufacturer page for the purpose of that knife. It's not meant to be a bushcraft / outdoor knife (but still can perform very well for that purpose). It's a tool for craftsmen who want a more robust knife than the normal Pro C / Pro S models. For that purpose the finger guard on the back of the handle makes sense for some applications. The whole new Pro series makes even more sense if you compare those knives with their main competitors - the Hultafors Craftsman's knives: Mora Pro 511 Hultafors HVK Mora Pro C Hultafors HVK GH Mora Pro Robust Hultafors Heavy Duty / GK Mora Pro 546 Hultafors RFR Mora Pro S Hultafors RFR GH In Scandinavia (especially in Sweden) the Hultafors knives (like the Mora Craftsmen series) are very popular amongst craftsmen. The new Pro series is Mora's attempt to gain market share. For bushcraft / outdoor purposes Mora offers their Companion / Bushcraft series and Hultafors just recently modified their Craftsman's knives for the same purpose (OK1 + OK4 which are very interesting competitors to the Mora Buscraft Black). But I agree that without the finger guard on the back of the handle the Pro series would be more interesting for bushcrafting / outdoor. I would not be surprised if they came up with the same knives with a slightly modified handle in the future if enough people kept asking for such a product line (like they had a model 510 witouth the finger guard [which many people disliked / cut off] of the old 511).

the robust is one of the best moras available.

The robust pro is quickly becoming my favorite on the property carry Mora, previous was companion hd. I have gone full circle, started with a mora and eventually semi custom knives, now back to a Mora on my belt, crazy stuff.

personally the Mora Robust is the only knife i use in camp.

Your review should be more about the purpose of the Pro Robust which is really just a thicker blade version of the Pro C. They all have their strengths depending on the situation. The Pro Robust is for the guys that love the Pro C but need a more "robust" blade. Kudos to Mora for offering even more options.

I've used Mora Pros for woodworking and there is absolutely no problem this knife

I’ve been watching knife videos in my down time for the past few weeks. It just dawned on me that we waaayyy overthink knives. Find a good knife that’s in your price range and run with it. If you like knives and can afford it then have a collection. Use the one you like most. Boooommmm!!!

This knife is not made to be a bushcraft knife, it is a working mans knife. Your point comparing one to the other, make no sense. Btw. The tang is much longer then you illustrated in this video, do your research.

It actually has a 3/4 tang, so it goes 3/4 of the way through the handle. Nice review. I picked one up today and it's a fantastic camp and prep knife and super light weight.

I love your videos, but I own a robust pro, and honestly of all the knives that I own it out performs them all! And I bought it for $14 brand new! Sharp as hell right out of the package. I see the difference between the 511 and pro-robust the 511 does slice a little better but it can’t take the same beating as the robust! In my opinion this particular video was not done with accurate information.

This is a great knife for construction.I have used it to cut mule tape,;bull line etc.Cutting ties,Cutting dry wall.All sorts of things and it held up very well.Sometimes the job calls for a knife that is more robust than a box cutter..But at the same time you don’t want to subject your edc to cutting bags of concrete.

It absolutely makes sense, even Joe X couldn't break it. You can depend your life on it, since it does not break from massive abuse.

I rather like the Robust. I got my dad one, It fits my hand perfectly and I like the weight of it. I'm ordering one for myself.

As Mora say on the homepage, about this knife. (This knife is for construction and crafts work. This means that we have prioritized a sharp and sustainable egg together with a steady grip, which means that the appearance of the bladder back is not as much space. If you use our building and craft knives in other contexts than those intended, keep in mind that most of them have this unpolished bladder back - it can not be used with ignition steel) Best regards from me in Sweden

The 511 is a good knife for light wood tasks. I can buy one for 4,95€ at my local hardware store but if I had to choose since I own both of these, I'd go with the Robust. The handle is nicer and it is simply indestructible. Great knife, unjust video.

Bushcraft this, bushcraft that......the robust pro was designed for CONSTRUCTIONWORKERS! The fact that you use it as a bushcraft/survivalknife is a compliment for Mora since this is a sturdy boxcutter for them. :) Ah well, gotta love every morakniv.

I bought the tops bob for around the house for just over a 100 bucks. Then I made the mistake of buying a mora! Now the expensive knife never leaves the draw as the moras do it all and do it better. DONT buy a Mora if you already spent more than 50 bucks on a knife. Buyers remorse lol

The way the knife bites into the wood is just so satisfying

It takes 2 minutes to sharpen the spine and turn it into an excellent fire starter. The “hook” makes it much more secure when your hands are slippery. And the extra blade thickness makes chopping small branches with a baton so easy that you don’t need to carry a hatchet.. Probably safer too..

The knife is designed for carpenters because it has a thick blade meant to be hit with a hammer and sturdy handle also the guard on the back of it Is for help pulling it out of wood then it's stuck.

I got in a Mora Craft Pro and a Companion Heavy Duty today and really like them both. Feel great in the hand, easy to control and cut feather sticks with out hardly any effort. I will say this between the two, the Craft Pro actually bites into the wood a little bit better than the Companion HD...still, no complaints with either knife.

In my opinion the pro series is a better skinning blade than the 511 or the companion.

You miss out on the allure.... A knife small enough to fit in a pocket and strong enough to baton....$14 -511 will break. -Companion a bit large and $10 more

As a bushcraft knife it's pretty incredible to be honest. You can baton incredibly hard wood albeit not very thick. Indestructible!

Was there any chipping or other blade deformities after chopping the dead branches? Just got a chip today on a different mora (749) on thinner than half pinky diameter baby tree saplings.

I think the point is a shorter Thicker blade as well as wider is less likely to flex or get bent or break. It has a bigger limit of use. Imo is aimed really aggressive use at work where failing a blade is possible because its a pain but not a crisis. Because blade are pushed beyond what is typical in the outdoors.

Listen to the name of it. It's not just for the bushcrafting abilities but also the fact that it is practically indestructible

The Robust has a 27 degree angle. The companion and 511 has a 23. The difference is almost unnoticeable during cutting.

I use the Robust for sort of carpentry tasks, I am making a knife handle and use the number 2 or the longer model slöjdkniv for details and the Robust for general whittling when I must use more force when cutting the quite hard juniper wood I have chosen as handle for my Yakutian knifeblade (as I had some juniper but no birchburl att home) or should I use stacked birchbark instead...

Robust whas more of an craftman knife for example electricians just a safe fixed blade thats also tough.

Being carbon steel, will the blade stain easily?

I think that a lot of Mora knives are redundant but that just makes more room for personal preference. For example, I bought the Craftline Robust because it had the same specs as the MG HD, it was $3 cheaper and it wasn't green (I have a lot of green in my kit as it is).

I like broader blade for spreading toast. handle is fab, imo

Pick the right tool for the right job. Some knives are just better for certain jobs. The Robust is a better option, only for those tasks that require more rigidity in the blade.

Have you tried modifying the sheath on this ? Does it work well for a survival knife.

If you dont like the little flare out at the bottom there is an easy solution, take another mora knife and slice it off. I cut my Pro S and Robust moras at the flare after buying them. Then I take a piece of sandpaper and shape it till the nub is gone. Thats kind of the point with Mora knives is they are great as is or a great platform to modify. I prefer the blade profile of the Pro S / Robust / Pro C over the companion.

Do you review all the knifes as bushcraft knifes on this channel? Because moras are work knifes used by construction workers, they also have bushcraft knifes available. This knife is designed for heavy use, and it does it job very well. This mora is unbrakeable.

Robust makes sense for me because in my state (Connecticut) it's illegal to carry a knife with a 4" blade. That means I want the Robust because it's 1/8" thick AND the blade length is under 4" meaning it's legal to carry here.

I have a companion and the sheath says mg. But the knife has the thinner blade. I bought it new. Did some of the mg knives have a thin blade?

Wouldn't the thicker blade be much better for wood processing? I know that the four inch companion HD would be better for batoning but there is also state laws to consider. I live in Georgia and the legal knife length used to be four inches. Even if the companion was right at four inches I wouldn't carry it just so I'm not pushing my luck. I'll probably pick one of these up. I like the look a bit better than the Basic because of the size of the blade and I think I can get away with edcing it without turning too many heads.

Love your videos and respect your opinion, but I disagree you my friend. I really like the new robust over the old. I think the handle and the width are an improvement. I just wish that mora wouldn't have shorten the length on it.

Great point of view. I have the new robust and ss and actually like them better. I am a big fan of knives that fit my hand well and these fit better to me than the older versions. Either way, a deal that cannot be beat. Good video.

Would this make an inexpensive comparison to the COLD STEEL Pendleton Hunter? I know, different grind. Your old video on the Pendleton Hunter is a bit blurry. I'd go with the Mini but the handle looks to small as I have XL hand. Looking for a decent fixed blade that could fit in the pocket. I have companions and light my fire models, bit big for edc in the pocket. Never had a HD model and thought as a general use knife a thicker spine might be handy.

I tend to agree unless someone just wants a beefier Mora, and if that's the case I would get the full tang Garberg. Mora's are great knives when you want a low-cost, sharp slicer. I balance mine by having an Esee 5 in my gear.

I hear ya. I own many of them, including this one. I really think it's a "Looks" thing....The "Pro" series knives look more like conventional outdoor knives to me, as opposed to the "Kitchen" look of most of the other modern Moras. And I agree with you on the "Thin" blade moras...My favorites!

I have one of these moras I use it in the local forest serves me well Its a work horse it's been dirty wet used in muddy conditions snow everything always performs well for me

I like the (slight) peace of mind you get with the thicker blade and the slightly longer tang, the handle seems good to me. The only thing that I would like added is a hole in the top of the handle for a lanyard.

The hook at the butt of the handle is solid. I sawed the hook off mine and filed it a bit now it feels good in my hand. I did the cutting parallel to the handle NOT perpendicular!

Another difference is that the robust has a much sturdier tang than the 511 to handle the light to moderate batoning. You can knock a 511 out of the handle much much easier than you can the robust.

I own the pro robust and the handle feel very secure compare with the robust which I own as well. Try the 546 which is made on stainless steel perfect for my environment where I live

Wood processing ??? I'm gona use an axe or a hatchet or a tomahawk ! But that mora robust knife is a great deal !

I intend to order this new model robust. I own a Companion HD, but I like the look of the stouter tip on the Robust. Also I like this new sheath, and own a pair of 546 Basics. What I like is the ability to piggyback a pair of different knives while taking up less space on my belt. I can't do that with my HD.

Sorry but ... The Robust Pro makes perfect sense because you don't know that the price is more cheaper than Companion HD in Europa ... Robust pro 12.50 and Companion HD 18 euros ... And it's not the same purpose ... ;-)

To my mind this design resembles more of a Hultafors which maybe is the answer. Mora would like for sure to have customers that like the companion design and the new one, so everybody shall be happy and satisfied I guess. The only thing I want to add is that the blade seems to be a bit more deep into the handle 3/4 of it which is really good. Anyway, great video, keep going for it!

Seeing this review is giving me a choice between the robust and the 511. I am a boy scout and as some may know, boy scouts don't allow knives over 4" (as far as i know). This obviously cuts out the pathfinder, 731, 748, kansbol, garberg, bushcraft black, bushcraft forest and 2000. I am not sure if they will accept the companion because it is just barely over 4" (4.1"). I want a knife that is tough, stays under 4", holds an edge, and is very sharp. Any help with the choice? (size of the handle is not a problem. i have hands that are a bit bigger than the average man's)

iLove this knife. is the perfect tool for what it was designed for, you're just not expecting to use it as intended, reviewing it comparing with a bushcrafting/camping design expecting it to be a better clipper/companion which has been refined for hundreds of years if not more. will it work as a bushcrafter?, yes, is it the absolute greatest bush design?, no but i've used it as such and it is a mora, it holds up and does all the tasks i need well, just not as fine of a carver. mod the thing cut off the rear guard and give the spine a good sharp90, i've done so and am impressed with its functionality. true to its name its ROBUST and i'm pretty damn sure its not gonna snap when conditions are harsh and i need something to survive . The highQrobust/companionHD probably a better allround bushcrafter, but i like the pro c style upsweep tip for skinning. the wider thicker blade moves the weight forward compared to other moras, and i like it, i think it works wonderfully for cutting control with all tasks i've put it to, like continual sweeping cuts opening box's and cutting plastic tethers/wraps, or cutting carpet or linoleum type materials and also for heavier cuts shaping materials for framing/construction. when i'm in the bush i find myself using this new robust alongside a hatchet for firewood processing and fatwood harvesting. top notch tool that can handle many heavier carpentry and industrial tasks easier as well as being adequate for bushcraft, its an amazing working mans tool.

nice review but ate you sure about tang length? I own one and the new 510 put a magnet on both and according to it. the length is about 3/4 rat tail

That's the beauty of Mora Knives... who buys just 1? I know that person is out there and I'm grateful that such anyone can get a quality knife for $10-$20. I just purchased 3 orange and black 511s for the road side kits we have in each of our vehicles. These knives are well made, simple, and if necessary easily replaced. I'm not going to place StongArms or BK-2s in those car kits. The Mora fits the bill.

I love this new little Mora and it comes in 3 different versions. This one and one with thinner carbon steel and also 1 in stainless steel. 7 Pro serie knifes My Moras has been stronger than my Bark River Bravo 1

What stores carry Mora knives? I'm having a hard time finding a local retailer in the Savannah, Ga. area.

It’s made for carpenters and craftsmen in an industrial environment. It’s not designed to be beat on, (although it can totally handle it) it’s there for craftsmen to use, since it aggressively cuts through wood, it would be easy to use this to carve out a tool from wood with it. But, it will hold up to these sorts of tasks. Some knives are meant for different tasks, it’s more of a carving/utility knife.

do you know how to use a belt sander? or rub the handle on a rock most vigorously? i prefer the handle on my robust actually. it gives a better grip for me. different strokes i guess. i do remember that time though, when i couldn't quite slice a tomato properly....that was a close one...lol!

The butt end has the bump out for when your using the butt end to hammer or pound on something with the rear of the knife. Just fyi. And I see your point on them but they're all relatively inexpensive also

here's why to go for the robust over the companion: local knife laws. where I live, you are not allowed to have a knife with a blade over 4 inches long outside of your home. its as simple as that

I honestly don't see the appeal of a mora anymore after messing with the Tops Scandi trekker. It's just my prefference, but after I get my Scandi trekker my Moras won't be used. And they're rarely used as-is.

I dunno, I like it better than the Companion HD. Comfier handle and wider blade.

agree with you on the back guard. I cut and sanded mine off on my 511. much better feeling knife now. I like to reverse cut and that guard just got in the way

Morakniv Pro and Basic are their craftline knives. That means they are designed as disposable work knives for craftsmen (hence the price).

Finally somebody said it! Yeah, small knife....thinner blade. I've been using and collecting knives for over 60 years and still have a couple of old thin Frost (Mora) knives that have rusted several times, been banged around and still take a nice edge and cut like a razor. Thanks for the review!

If your default benchmark for judging a small fixed blade knife is that it has to be good at "Bushcraft stuff" then this video makes perfect sense. If you understand the task that a trade/utility knife is made for then this review makes no sense at all. There's a good reason for the handle design and the shorter, thicker blade.

Spot on that extra bit on the back is driving me nuts and it's coming off just wish I'd seen this vid earlier.
