I struggled with this video, I really did. Does the dowel have an appealing look hidden below its cylindrical exterior? Can beauty arise from the ingrained hardworking dowel that is rarely ever seen? I think the answer is a big yes. Let me show you how you can give new life to an old, reliable friend.

While the split and double dowels were indeed cool, the building of the jigs were far more interesting to me personally. The narration and video were top notch and kept my attention to such an extent, I largely forgot why you were building the jigs in the first place. Well done sir. This is great work- such a cool jig. I'll also suggest another option, for anyone like me who's too lazy to make something like this 😉. Rockler sells a really useful jig named the "corner key doweling jig" that's meant for reinforcing miter joints with dowels. It allows you to drill holes for 1/8, 1/4, and 3/8 inch dowels, and because of this, you can also create the "double dowel" effect shown in this video. I know Rockler stuff tends to be waaaay too expensive, but this jig is actually a good deal at only $50 (well, a good deal for a Rockler product, anyway). I've used it for this effect numerous times, and it's always come out great. Don't mean to take attention away from your effort here, just throwing in a suggestion in case anyone's interested in a pre-fab jig. Keep up the great work!

Wothouot that, I watch the whole thning to see the end (how it works) and then have to watch it again to uhderstand the order of the steps and how they lead to the whole project. Thanks for sharing

hot jiggity jig ! looks great man - can't decide which one I like best. Probably the screwdriver version - looks cool offset at different angles. Bonus for me is that we are still looking good with respect to this not infringing on my dowel jig idea so I may still go ahead with that 😁

I subscribe to another channel from Australia. This guy made a dowel maker jig with a thick steel bar. My Son is a welder and he gave me one. I like using dowels for certain things so I decided to try it out. His is all metric 5-10.5 by half's. Mine will include SAE and METRIC and your dowel jig will hang next to it. With only so many projects, my biscuit jointer may gather more dust.

You’ve read my mind! I thought the same thing. You’d have to glue an insert first and wait a day I think as you’ll just end up damaging the other. Those table saws are rarely ever delicate. I’ve also thought of them making butterfly like cuts by make a pass, gluing an insert and coming back later to cut another at a slight angle.

Nice build. Would this be difficult freehand on the bandsaw with a fence?
@MakeThings
@MakeThings 4 жыл бұрын
I thought about that but It would be difficult (not impossible) to get the width right. If you manage to do it, let me see. Be careful to use a jig though like my bandsaw sled as the contact surface of a dowel to the bandsaw table is not enough to keep it from spinning.

Nice job, I like it. I will trim the 10-32 screws at the end of the nut. I don't like them sticking out so far as your's. The length is not needed. JIM
@MakeThings
@MakeThings 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, you’re right. I just hate cutting ends off of those bolts...although, if you didn’t clean them up and cut them with the nuts on, you wouldn’t need worry about them coming off.

That’s a shame. My next thought went to pocket holes. But they would have to be cut pretty deep; probably have to glue up three layers and cut the dowels out of that.
