I completely agree with you on the "unicorn makeup" being an anti-trend. I think the key for me is that it's unapologetic. Some makeup pretends like it's not makeup, trying to be natural and enhance rather than be art, and to me the "unicorn makeup" is the antithesis of that approach and instead is an unapologetic statement of fun, whimsy, artistry, and pure makeup that can inherently never go out of style

I love this discussion of unicorn make up. Like I feel like it has something to do with like not taking make up too seriously, like almost anti-glam or leaning into camp. Like it’s about not trying to be too tasteful or something. I love looks like that. Stuff you couldn’t wear to your job at a bank.

Also I just love how you keep your videos so interesting and show your passion for beauty and makeup without having to constantly consume new products. Anti trends not talked: about brown lipstick, it never looks dated. Neutral natural looking makeup will always and has always looked good. A pink cheek will never go out of style.

When I was just a young thing, not allowed to wear makeup, I found books by Bobbi Brown at the library: Beauty and Teen Beauty. She was a huge proponent of not wearing a layer of foundation all over the face, a groomed brow in its natural shape, and blush. She talked about makeup being fun and not about perfection. Her books definitely helped to inform my own makeup aesthetic and also helped me to embrace my bushy brows in the late 90s (when teensy weensy brows were everywhere). I surely can’t remember everything from those books, but I feel like her ethos and aesthetic as an artist was the quintessential anti-trend. Sometimes playful; sometimes bold; always classic.

The red lip with almost nothing else is one of my favorite every-day looks. I use the Violette_Fr Petal Bouche velvet matte liquid lipstick and it's so pigmented I can just smudge it on with my finger for a red daytime look, then touch it up with the wand for a night out. That red is an instant confidence boost and I completely understand why grandma always used to say you're not dressed without red lipstick and a bit of perfume. 💄

Yes, clean skin, red lip with a crisp white tshirt and Levi’s is such a look. Add a good pair of sunglasses and you’re set. That will always be a look. And I love the little flick. I can only do a thin little one because I have really big lids, not hooded but the fold comes down pretty far.

Not sure if this counts, but a styled eyebrow feels like an anti-trend. My very first bit of makeup that I owned was clear mascara that I used to style my brows most days. (This was in like, 2002, before brow gels were not as easy to come by.)

I feel like these anti trends all evoke something of the naturql shape and color of the human face. Sort of like enhancing eyelashes shape, enhacing just the natural pigment of the lip. There seems to be something of nature in them :) hope that makes sense

I do dress in 50’s clothing and have for the last 8 years, and love wearing my red lip and a kitten flick, it really is something I can wear with what ever look I I do with my makeup. I also used to wear more rocker chic before that and I wore red lips, even at work when I worked for an international airline. It is something I have been wearing for 30 years, and as soon as I put that red lip I just feel more comfortable and confident 💋

Loved the video, lovely as always. For years my statement has been the cat flick and red lipstick with nothing else, then I slowly started to appreciate the artistry of makeup more and I rarely don't wear a full face of makeup. I love it all! The simple and elegant, the unicorn makeup, the classy, the colorful and exaggerated, the statement cheeks with blush all over...to me it's a hobby, a way to express myself, art, and experimentation. Each day I try something new and the time I spend putting on my makeup is my favorite part of the day. I just don't understand when people use makeup to be "presentable", it's a foreign concept for me. On the rare occasions I don't feel or have time to wear makeup I just don't.

I've long been put off by the concept of "timeless" makeup and fashion trends-- because people often really mean "rich white women wear this." Although obviously all beauty and fashion has cultural baggage attached (because beauty and fashion basically ARE cultural baggage) I like the idea of the anti-trend having more to do with looks that can't be associated with a single setting, time period, genre, class, identity etc. This video kind of shifted my opinion on the anti-trend/timeless concept in beauty.

When I was in college and we casted iron sculptures - the most fun part was adding the patina to it. The bronze itself isn’t as interesting until you add something to it, heck, teal bronze patina is one of the most beautiful colour and suits the neutral bronze or metal colours.

As someone whose "signature look" is a single swarovski crystal glued under each eye... I absolutely agree that unicorn makeup is an anti-trend. Using the Urban Decay heavy metal liner in distortion as an inner corner highlight is also a really beginner friendly whimsical makeup look, especially if you use your fingertip.

Such an interesting topic. I'd say even a gray smoky eye is an anti-trend or just smoky eyes in general or at least the more natural colors (not blue or maybe not even green, but like purple, gray, bronze). Even pink or "nude" lips I think can be an anti-trend. And while watching this before Sadie made her appearance, my cat, Arrow, was meowing to get into my room. She's never goes out of style either. 😂 She rocks her black fur coat and says "I'm a miniature panther" with every step.

Doing eye-liner with hooded eyes became the embodiment of my relationship with make-up. When I tried to use it to make my eyes look less hooded I would grow frustrated as it is an impossible task. However hooded eyes allow you to do cool almost optical illusionary liner, using the hoodedness to make different looks when the eye is open and closed. My hooded eyes allow me to do looks I love that are not impossible on the supposed ideal eye shape.

OMG Hannah! 🤩 Your final category is exactly the ‘look’ I most aspire to create, but have been unsure existed. I am a joyous fat 50 year old rabid feminist who wore no makeup until 2 years ago. I then decided to try to figure out what all those colorful powders were about. One of my largest challenges is the threat of sliding into that “When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple” kind of camp. I don’t mind the original poem, but the spirit seems to have been co-opted by those Red Hat Society people, who to me embody the opposite of anti-trend. (Which is to say, they enacted a big, fat trend, which is now distinctly over.) I’ve had this little voice inside me insisting that what I’ve been working on isn’t that, but is actually timeless. And now you’ve provided me with the expert validation that I’ve been seeking! Thank you so much!

A tip for winged liner on hooded eyes - looking straight on to a mirror with eyebrows relaxed can really help with a “guide line”. Stretching out the “hood” while drawing the shape can give it the swoop. Spoken from a hooded eye gal who has worn a wing for most days of the last 15 years 😉

I loooove this! I've always been drawn to more classic and simple makeup looks and it's very much my personal taste in makeup, but I will admit that it's been really difficult to actually nail down the techniques! I am sure I practiced the small cat eye at least 100 times at home before wearing it out because it was very hard to find the right angles for my deep set and hooded eyes. Same goes for the red lip, because it needs to be quite a sharp lip line and I have a very prominent cupid's bow it was really hard to figure out the right places to slightly over-line in a way that balanced out and flattered my features. And I agree about "unicorn" makeup, I think there is a very timeless aspect to the whimsey of glittery fun-but-effortless eye.

This was super interesting! I would guess a pink red blush is anti trend but purely because I'm trying to think about historically what has been done even way back thousands of years ago and quite a few you mentioned were. Love this video, Hannah! I have one "makeup anti-trend" I'd love to add! Black, eyeliner (top and bottom) with a nude lip. Love this look!

My go to special occasion makeup is no makeup makeup and then just a sheer tap of shimmer/glitter on the eye! So easy, and feels special but low key at the same time! My favorite are the Bodyography glitter pigments

winged eyeliner is def my anti trend lol, i just don't feel right without it. if i'm going to wear makeup i'm doing the little kitten flick. i have monolids which are like the boss level of hooded eyelids, but i've never really struggled with eyeliner tbh. i just do a little triangle, angled straight/horizontally instead of an upwards flick, starting from the outer part of my eye if that makes sense. i dont think the hooded or not hooded thing matters so much as following your eye shape/angle on the other hand i really love the red lip look and wish i could do it more, but i struggle to find red lipsticks that actually look good on me because most of the 'holy grail' true red lipsticks look fuschia or bluish on me, which just looks terrible. i've wasted/thrown away a lot of expensive lipsticks...

I wanted to make a request. I love your duping the vibes series and I was hoping you could test more Indie brands who sell single eyeshadows. There's so many Indie brands that sell single eyeshadows that I would love your opinion on.

Cat eye liner with a red lip is my favourite! Also I would say blush/rouge is timeless! It's existed forever! I also love it with a shimmery ivory shade on the lids!!even a little bit of taupe in the crease sometimes. Very 50s. Also lately I've been loving colourpops moon stamps on my cheekbones or forehead. Loving colorful makeup too. Blue also never goes out of style almost. Wings red lips and blue eyes. Egypt!!

My favorite easy make-up statement piece is a brightly colored matte buffed up onto my brow bone. It is easy, one brush and because I have hooded eyes, is the fastest way to draw attention. If I'm going to do two steps, I will put on my favorite colored mascara.

Fascinating video, Hannah. Makeup itself is timeless, and I hate the tendency to pigeonhole all topics related to beauty as some kind of dismissive "women's interest" box. I blame the patriarchy, of course. 😉 Your examples and clip contained in this video are a treasure of inclusivity so rarely seen...well, anywhere. Well done! ❤️❤️❤️
