Interesting fact: Ash is pretty much seasoned before you split the wood, it naturally has a hollow sound, and a standing tree/log has 18-24% moisture, which just above or at the less than 20% to classify as seasoned.

In colorado, most gas stations and stores have really cheap crap wood bundles for campfires and those are usually 7 or 8 bucks each. I know prices vary depending on location, but I'd have no issue paying $8 for seasoned specifically cut smoking wood.

Awesome! One thing to consider doing is what I've had some success here with and that is selling cherry and oak chunks. A lot of people got Big Green Eggs and other smoker/grills that don't use splits. I just take my smoker sized splits and use a chop saw to make the chunks. Sell them for $30 for a 5 gallon bucket, $20 for half a bucket. When I sell them, package in a paper grocery bag and you're done! Easy to make and store for whenever someone wants a batch!

Only taking $1 more for the small splits is very reasonable, would be okay if you took $2 I think personally

Agree, you have more labor and I will guess more wood. It would be nice to make a regular bundle break it re-split and re-bundle. I'll bet it will have more wood

I suspect you under estimate the extra time and effort involved. You need to include the time to take the special order, the time drive over to sort the wood you re-split, the extra time to bundle 20+ as opposed to 8 pieces of wood.

To increase production time and remove the extra steps place the bundler perpendicular to the end of and touching(or closer to) the tailgate then you only have to rotate your trunk and maybe take a pivot step to load the bundler. It’s no big deal with 2-3 bundles, but if you want to get to 45-50 per hour it makes a significant difference. Thanks for the entertainment.

I think you've underpriced it considerably. Rather than think of it in terms of incrementally extra work for you and pricing because of that, you can think of it in terms of the value you are providing to the end user with this specialty product. Your cost for a generic firewood bundle is irrelevant when you're selling carefully selected and split single species wood for top quality smoking and barbequeing. That's a much different, more desirable product which can command a higher price. You could start building your brand with it by just adding a single half sheet paper label under the stretch wrap.
@bmbullman

You're right. I was actually appalled at the price when I heard it... and that was before I saw how much work was involved in the process for each bundle!

This is good customer approach. I would love to have firewood supplier like you (although I like splitting my wood with the axe :)). Additional $1 for splitting that small is like free IMHO. In most cases I've seen smoking wood like that 10 times more expensive than regular firewood.

Have you weighed a smoking bundle vs a campfire bundle? My guess is it's more wood since it packs tighter with smaller pieces.

I’d guess the smoking bundle to be lighter. 3-4 smoking pieces in the form of a whole log are obviously packed a lot tighter than those same pieces once split

Sounds like a great business. You’ve got a great location, that’s the key. You must have great neighbors, there are many people who would complain about too much traffic and running a business in a residential area. In my neck of the woods there is a growing “snob” zoning movement. No outside clothes lines, next up is to ban wood burning fireplaces. Good thing I’m retiring soon and plan on moving out.

Splitter ,bundler, rzr , min walking . I count handled 3 times . Feet hardly leave a 3’ circle Load on rzr 1 . See you load splitter table 2 - split 3 - unload/bundle 4 - a lot of walking this way . Smoker wood where I am in Ontario Canada sells by the pound. The going rate is $1 per pound. I sell Hickory for $20 for 25 pounds. I sell camp fire wood in barrels that hold approx 1/6th of a face cord but 14" pieces instead of 16" pieces for $40 delivered locally.

Adam pretty much how I do it but I try to sell my smoker wood hickory and cherry pretty much double the price $10 per bundle. They are still getting a lot better deal than at the big stores where I see bundles pushing $20. I have to do a lot of the splitting down to smaller pieces even for the camp fire bundles. I used to split everything down to bundle size, but not good when customers want bigger splits. You can always go smaller but difficult to make them larger. Take care, Ben.

I would appreciate any suggestions you might have.

Yes, it may be only one extra minute of time but your time and worth are very valuable. I was very surprised you only charged $1.00 more. Here in St. Louis the quick stores are selling one regular bundle (6-7 pieces) for $5.99. If you buy two bundles you can get it for $9.99. Last week I purchased a 4X8 load of firewood for $155.00. Needless to say I have had a fire going every night in my firepit since this purchase.
