I turned a 2-piece carbon fiber kayak paddle into a lightweight 5-piece packrafting paddle that converts into a trekking pole.
www.diypackraft.com
Math: I wanted the paddle blades to be at a 30 degree angle from each other for better performance in headwinds, so I calculated the length of a 30 degree arc on the outside of the paddle shaft using the formula for the circumference of a circle C=pi*D (where C is the circumference, D is the diameter, and pi is approximately 3.14). Since there are 360 degrees in a circle, I multiplied the circumference by 30/360 (i.e. divided by 12) to get the offset distance. It worked out to about 8 mm.

Made a four piece from a two piece using this method. Had to sand down the new sticks a little bit. Parts from Amazon. Only needed two 50mm sticks of 27mm OD tube. Thanks!

That's fantastic. It's pretty interesting that even with your mods it turned out lighter than before.

Think this would work on a cheap (non carbon) fiberglass paddle? Never cut one up before so not sure if there's any metal or anything inside

Thanks for watching! Yeah, I think it’s probably very similar inside.

Have you gotten much time on the water with it yet? Any concerns about a 5 piece being weaker than a 4 piece?
@DIYPackraft
@DIYPackraft 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s been great. I’m not an aggressive whitewater paddler, but I’ve had no concerns in class 2+ water. If I wanted a really stiff and strong paddle I would have used beefier tubing and overlapped the joints more, but for the types of paddling I do it’s not required and I was trying to keep it light. Four pieces would work just as well... I don’t think it would be stronger though.

Any idea how much weight you saved by using thinner rod?
@DIYPackraft
@DIYPackraft 4 жыл бұрын
About 70 grams (2.3 oz) - plus a bunch of money because I would have had to order another one of the larger diameter tubes if I was making the center section the larger diameter too.

Could you please let me know how long padle using?

I think it’s about 240 cm, but I can’t remember. It’s long.

@@DIYPackraft Thanks, everyone using paddle about 200-205sm, but I think it's small for me, I will try with 240.

Do you have a link to the carbon tubes and buttons you bought?

No, I just bought the cheapest ones on Amazon.

@@DIYPackraft I figured, looks like the best option from a quick google search. I have a used Carbon Sherpa coming I got off Kijiji, will probably do this exact mod. At the end of the video, I was thinking that the shaft might make a decent walking staff and ultralight tent pole. Sure enough, you did that too.

Hi, I just cut a bent shaft Werner Player paddle apart (from circa 2005) to do this. Unfortunately the ID of the cut shaft is 0.86 and the closest OD tube I can find in either carbon or aluminum is 0.83 and too sloppy to work. Anyone have ideas? Not the end of the world if the paddle is a write off
@DIYPackraft
@DIYPackraft 2 жыл бұрын
I would either sand out the inside until a larger tube will fit in, or build up the inside with epoxy so a smaller diameter fits snugly, or maybe shim it with aluminum sheet (from a beer can, for example).

@@DIYPackraft Thanks. I think those suggestions would all work well on the permanently connected side, but not so well on the side that comes out. I could probably get a machine shop to bore out the shafts to say 0.01" over 0.875", but not sure I want to mess with that for a spare spare paddle (as in 3rd). I found an aluminum sleeve that likely has tight enough tolerance to join them from the outside. Kinda janky, but we'll see.

Just in case. Maybe you need for a budget configuration. A four-section paddle with aliexpress weighs 800 grams and costs $ 25 P.S. And I did not do my pact this year :(

I don’t think you will find a carbon paddle for $25, but yeah, there are much cheaper options.

@@DIYPackraft Yah, all the Aliexpress options will run you $200-$500 CAD, shipped to Canada. They charge almost the value of the paddle at the border. Much better off looking on Kijiji or Craiglist for a used Carbon paddle.

@@Uncle_Fred Boomer, ...its not 1989 anymore, a Carbon Tune cost about $10 buck a 500mm long and from 5mm to 20mm diameter....so you can do it for less then 50 buck, a shovel itself you can buy for about 25-40....a set of paddles from carbon material you buy from $80....
